318 combo's

This drivetrain was pulled and the car was traded off. The engine sitting on a stand right now in the shop waiting for its new home, a late-80s Dakota.

It ran a 13.27@101 before the car was pulled apart. It'll be going in the Dakota with a little bit bigger cam and a much steeper gear.
Thanks for that. I also want to run the 399 pistons but with the Edelbrock heads, Super Victor intake and 800 AVS thunder and thinking of a moving up to a .555 lift solid.

I have thr following in my 74 Valiant
*318 +30"
*Std crank, rods, Hyper pistons 9.0to 1 comp ratio
*318 heads with 360 size valves , port matched to 360 ports , bowls cleaned up
*Comp XE274H Duration at 050 inch Lift 230 int./236 exh.Valve Lift 0.488 int./0.491 exh.Basic Operating RPM Range1,800-6,000
* Comp lifters and pushrods with 273 rockers
*Airgap manifold, with 650 vac sec BG Demon carb
*MSD pro billet with summit digital ign box
*PAcemaker tri-y 1"5/8 headers with 2.5" dual exhaust & h pipe
* 904 with shift kit, 2800 stall and 3.45 gears
CAr weighs in around 3800lbs and had 255/60/15 BFG on the rear
best run is 14.46@96mph with consistent 14.6 passes , I have a 75 shot of gas being fitted at the moment as it is very slow to the 60ft , but I need the gears as they are for a lot of distance driving

Cheers

In 1995 we built a 1st yr apprentice cheap as chips 318 for my VH Hardtop with 904 2.92 open gears ran 14.8 @ 93 with 2.09 60 ft with standard '74 318 heads, std valve and springs with nothing more than k-liners and valve grind. The std bore 318 was decked .040 and refreshed with a Heatseeker 276 deg .420 lift cam. 600 vac on a Holley street dominator intake(a very good 318 manifold), genie extractors with twin 2" system. No big deal but very cheap. This little motor gave me years of fun breaking a rocker arm and cracking a flex plate while handing out beatings on Adelaide Chrysler cruises.
Since then its had 273 heads with 265 valves, LD340 intake with divider removed with 600 AFB, pacemakers with 2 1/2" system when in the CM SE 727 2.92 for a few years.
Now it's back in the Hardtop with Eddy heads, Holley strip dominator intake with 600 AFB with 1/2" fuel lines, big port HP (pacemakers). Accel billet dissy and coil with 3000 stall full manual 904 and 3.23 lsd. Recently fitted 1.6 stainless rollers. Hope to run this on the dyno or ?track? before it gets pulled out for a 'hot' 318 4000 stall and 4.11s

I love the 318 and do a lot research on them and talk to people who run high tens and elevens with them to understand them and I dont care for 4" cranks.

Went on dyno yesterday and made 224hp on at the wheels was running very rich and not tuned had a front uni fail and destroy trans

My 318 is out of an '83 dodge stick shift van. The bottom end is stock with an old mp 260' .450" cam. I ported the heads opening them way up. Raised the roofs of the intakes, widened the pushrod pinch, profiled the guide bosses and bowl blend. Port matched the performer 318/360 intake topped with a tq off a '73 440. Stock electronic ignition. It is in a '70 dart with an f body o/d a833. Have not gotten to the track yet but I'm happy with how it runs. Pulls real hard.

My buddies old 318 combo from about 2000. I think it ran real good for what it was...

All steel 1974 Duster street car. No weight reduction at all.period. Down to the bench seat..

Stock re-ring/hone and re bearing '74 318. Factory pistons..
*Wolverine Blue Racer 429/444 camshaft...can't remember duration right off the bat.
*Stock '74 318 heads
*Flowtech headers and "2.5 glasspacks
*Double roller timing chain
*Edelbrock Performer 600 carb+Edelbrock Performer intake

Stock 904 with no mods. No shift kit. 8.25 rear with 2.76 gears(peg leg).

9.76 in the eighth mile at Wilkesboro Raceway park.

My plans for my 318 :
Freshen up the bottom end.
Hughes 318 muscle car cam
Home ported stock heads 1.88/1.60 valves
Edle intake, Holley 600 carb , long tube headers, flow master exhaust
Going in my daily driven 72 duster, that will rarely see the strip

Hey All,

Looking to freshen up my stock 1972 318 as well. So far I'm looking at the Edlebrock Performer 600CFM carb with either the Performer or RPM Performer manifold. I am building just a a fun street car, but if I decide to go more wild (still street car) in the future (up the compression, cam, pistons), I don't want to be limited. Thoughts? Should I be considering Holley as well? Feel free to PM.

Here is the carb:
http://www.jegs.com/i/Edelbrock/350/1406/10002/-1

Also, I am going to make the switch to electronic igniton. Jegs has kits from mopar performance and their "Jegs" brand. Does anyone have experience with the Jegs brand? It's a bit cheaper.

Here are the ignition kits (See "Similar Items" section for comparison)

This is not a Q&A thread but a look at what I did. Though, you should have started your own thread on the topic or searched for one (There's many on 318's), your answers are;

Use the RPM intake, the Jegs ignition is fine.
A Holley carb is fine, carb choice is a tasters choice. Some like the Holley, some do not. It is an opinion and there like assholes moving gas through the end.

Also, the "IDEA" of a message board is not to PM ideas or help back and forth since some one else could have the same idea, problem, issue, question and there is no thread to draw from because the answer is in your PM box. This makes the site worthless.

Try a search and a new thread for your questions. This helps everybody and not just you.

Rpm is a little more than you need but if it fits with your long term plans (400hp) and don't wanna to buy intakes twice throw her on but I'd look for used standard performer or even stock 340/360 intake for the mean time.

My setup at the moment contains of a stock 1996 truck 5.2 magnum short block, slight touch up on the ports/valve guide bosses otherwise stock 1.92/1.6 valved magnum heads, reground stock cam thats .496/.496 lift with the stock 1.6 rockers, .224 duration at .050, all on a 112 lsa, Chinese Procomp intake (airgap copy) that was ceramic coated, old 600cfm Carter carb, stock magnum truck exhaust manifolds with dual 2 1/4 pipes out back. 25-2800 stalled 904, stock 7 1/4 with 3.23s (Yeah, we'll see how long it lasts..) The thing sounds good at idle, but makes a lot of noise above idle because It needs some longer pushrods to make up for the reground cam.. Also planning to run a 100 shot of the bottle at the track eventually.

Here's mine on a 72 dart swinger. 318 bored 30 over, fully rebuilt, kb 167 pistions, xe 268h camshaft, performer intake, 570 holley street avenger, comp double roller timing chain, 302 casting heads unported, 901-16 trick flow springs with comp retainers, melling standard oil pump with mp shaft. Got pics but haven't figured out how to post yet.

when I first got my duster, it had a 77 318 in place of it's original 340.... since the lil 318 was in there, I figured I'd play with it. slammed on some mildly ported magnum heads, mopar .450/.455 lift cam (spec's in the .480's with the 1.6 rockers), an M1 dual plane, holley 600 vac secondary carb and some mopar 1 size fits all small tube headers feeding a 2 1/2" exhaust with an h pipe and dynomax super turbo mufflers. hit a dynoday with that combo and it put down 215rwhp/252rwtq .........at the time of the dyno, I had a smoked out slushy 727 in the car that took an easy 3/4 second to shift. pulled that trans out a few weeks later and the fluid was a silvery black mess all filled with chunks o clutch.... gauranteed she'd have laid down a good 15/20 more hp with a crisp trans in there.

I never did hit the track with it, but after I swapped a crisp 904 in with a 2500 stall, I stomped an M5 twice out of the hole with it. thing was a lil screamer for what it was.

before the 340 in my dart i had a 318.ported j heads with 202/160s,old domed forged slugs, headman headers, custom schneider racing cam 284* .500 lift 108 lsa.DLI modified m1 intake and 750 cfm carb.366hp.@ 6000.the cam was on the big side for what i was doing at the time, it was like a light switch above 3000 rpms.

I think like most of these guys that building up a 318 is the way to go. These engines are plentiful, parts are cheaper and it sounds like some guys are getting some very good performance out of them. I also like the fact that the 318 is very durable and more reliable than other engines...

1973 dart 318 /904 and 355 gears eventually, has 2.94 now, stk converter hooker super comp headers and offy 4bbl dual plane intake. any you have any 318 pistion size recomendations? stok 318 strock and bore, with 340 purple cam and stock 318 heads with eldy valve springs. looking to rebore with new pistions, can go higher on compression and size with 318 head, any suggestions? also will be uniing m/p higher compresion thin head gaskets.

Is this a good combo on a 318?
*Edelbrock rpm head
*Keith black kb 167 pistons
*Eagle I beam rods
*Edelbrock 2176 manifold
*Edelbrock 1405/1406 600cfm carburetor
*2.5" Exhaust system
Everything else is stock.

I now that i didn't include a cam. That's because i don't have any clue which one i should use for this combo. Can i use the original rockers on the rpm head or would it be better buy some better rockers?

Pompis, this is not a tech asking thread but a thread to post what you are using and how it performs. Create your own thread to ask a question.

Otherwise, your answer is yes.

Now go create your own thread with what you posted above. It's. great start.

ok, here's mine, anyone care to guess at the horsepower numbers, cause i aint got a clue. currently in the process of a total rbuild, since someone blew a head gasket and let it set, just bought it, so i am having a blast so far.. anyway.. 318 bored +.030, trw L2329 +.o30 10 to 1, holley dominator intake, Holley 750 double pumper, CC 202233 Xtreme energy cam, now for machine work, polished crank, stock deminsions, stock rods, rods side clearanced and floated, block decked -.020, heads cc'd to 59CC, intake surfaces milled on both heads, ported and polished, steel guides installed. ALSO have a GK 288Z cam, cam with the motor, but was told too wild for street. anyone wanna guess at Horsepower ratings?? and yea all this was done before i got the car, back in 1984. cost a whopping $1857.24 to have all that done..and the short block assembled..wouldn't even wanna see the bill these days.

never have found all the specs, but was told by an professional engine builder it's a 288 duration cam, made for 5500 to 7500 RPM' which I am not comfortable turning in a street engine.

Cool,thanks.G.K,made some nice grinds Mark Huffington(IIRC) designed, later started Cam Dynamics.

O.K. Lets just say low-buck means low-buck. When I first put my completely stock 318 2bbl from an '85 dodge truck in my '65 ply belvedere, it ran 15.90's at 84 mph. Stock tranny, stock gears (crossed the finish line in 2nd gear) and I used the 2bbl carb from the 273 that was in my ply.
