318 upgrades

-
I bought a totally stock standard 1974 318 recently, that was rebuilt years ago and sat in someone's shed. The cast pistons have 4 valve reliefs and are 0.103" in the hole. I bought a set of cheap Sealed Power 526AP30 pistons which are a true flat top with no valve reliefs and 0.067" in the hole. With the mildly ported (230/160cfm) 360 J heads I have, that have been cut 0.040" we get an honest 9:1 SCR, using a Mr Gasket 0.025" head gasket. Cam is a Comp XE262H with a Performer intake and Eddie 600 carb and Doug's long tube headers. Hoping for 320HP & 360TQ. I think this is really achievable and proves that you can have tons of street driven fun with a LA318.
Absolutely.

Do you know the CC of your J heads after the .04” cut? That cam has a very impressive torque curve on Comps site in their test mule Chevy small block.

What I find funny about this 318 vs 360, Everyone would be for a stock 2bbl 360 or even 4 bbl with duals and a good tune. Even 4bbl 360 with stock cam and low cr, people would still say a ok performer and be torquey (330-380 lbs-ft) for what it is.

Now a warmed over 318, mild cam, 4 bbl, headers and tune would make similar torque at similar rpms aka similar overall power. But for some reason it said gonna be a turd, under power no torque. A decently built 318 can make 400+ lbs-ft the same torque as a mild 360, but somehow when a 360 makes 330-400 lbs-ft it's torquey but when it's a 318 it ain't.

And yes I know a similar built 360 than a 318 will make more torque, (but that's what gears are for lol)

Maybe you guys should write & publish the definative 318 Mopar hop up book. Then you can sell them to everyone when they ask the Eternal Question that some here find so annoying.
With many hundred thousands still out there this will continue to be asked a while longer.
So get over it & help out or don't bother repeating what you're so bored with.
And Msnufacturers need to get it together & build some proper parts as people want them & have to make do with whats available that's not exactly what's needed. What happened to the marketplace, its not creating the parts that a large contingent wants. What's wrong with Capitalists today? Get with
Yeah,Yeah,Yeah...

One aspect of building a 318 based motor that seems to go overlooked is many of us left the 318 behind with our youth, many in our late teens but after years of building larger small blocks and the ease of BB power and when even the longer stroke builds past the cookie cutter 4 inch stroker kits can get tiresome.

Its fun and challenging and lets not forget there are many who love the Ford 289 and Chevy 302.

Fun can come in many different forms and many of us do not drink or fish and are too old (well, heart is too bad off) for frequent hookers and cocaine. Gotta do something.

318s are all that's left but lets not make them into some legend they aren't...I think that's the most annoying thing about the topic.

100%, I think a lot of people would be better off building to an Rpm number than a hp number.

eg.. 2000-5500 rpm with a hp peak around 5000 rpm, with some gears and higher stall, 2500-6000 rpm with a hp peak around 5500 rpm etc..
I think they would be better off to start with " What rpm do you want to run at highway speed?"

Why don't you stop commenting if you don't care so much that you have nothing positive to add to the conversation.
Better yet start your own thread for 318 haters/don't bother/waste of time/waste of money/blah blah blah.
Whatever dudes, just do something else, your bash fest is old & every 318 owner is tired of having to wade thru your bull to find the facts they need, and doubting what they want to do.
"Just the facts, ma'am!"

I didn't start anything...I can go and you guys can bullshit each other all you want
the silliness lies in the fact that someone will dump a bunch of cash into a 318 and we'll see it for sale for $1000 anyone here paying that for a 318? this is where it ends up LOL!

You can add gears to any motor.
If after 19 pages you still don't understand gearing, hp, torque, powerbands, what is or isn't part of a topic etc... I don't think messing this supposedly joke thread gonna help you much.

So why did Chrysler Marine Division build so many 318s for boats(& Industrial & Amplex Division for gen sets etc)?
Anyone have a clue?
I won't make you guess; its because marine engines need Torque. You are constantly Pushing thru water or drag on hull at speed. All applications require TORQUE.
And guess what, Marine applications run single plane intakes like a 273 4bbl. So right there is another anomaly that everyone says doesn't work.
Doesn't anyone do off label research just to learn anymore? Just for learnings sake?

Yes that would be part of picking where do you want to make power. Notice how how I mentioned stall and gearing in the second half of the example, that deeper gears and higher stall allowed for more rpm.

Is this directed at me as a counter to what I said ? Or are you adding to what I said in agreement ?

Supposedly joke ? lol

your rhetoric grows tiresome, friend.

Don't take his purpose away from him, he obviously needs to hate on UTG and 318's, I'm not sure if I have ever not seen him sneak one and or the other in to a conversation no matter the topic :)

The gibberish the OP 1st posted cause he thought It would be funny, I don't really see the humor in it, I just thought Forest Gump was getting into A Bodies :)
You don't need to explain to me. I got it right away. I thought is was funny. But not as funny as you asking him for more information.

Probably cause you both speak the same language :) (just kidding) Yes he got me, cause as I skimmed through/disregarded his gibberish I asked him to start over, He got me good, I just don't know how I'm gonna carry on. The Shame :(

Dart Swinger, you are very closed minded and ignorant. The 340 god mentality here is much like a case of "arrested development" mopar style. You seem to be disillusioned in the way that anyone building a 318 is a poor ignorant fool who can not afford to build anything else or has nothing else which is far from the truth.

The 340 is also a good motor and is as well like the 318 a simple production motor with its own flaws and drawbacks. But there is a world past the 340 Lil Billy it just seems to not be found here.

Funny there DS, looking over the pages of your postings show you have nothing substantial to add to any post other then to bash 318s since most your replies are in 318 posts so you clearly have a hard on for them or maybe used to get your *** kicked by a 318, who knows but your bias shows like a bright light in the night.

Folks do not need a you tube channel to call someone out whether its about there car, skill level or abilities. But for some reason you have a real disdain for anything 318 related but feel compelled to post to everything 318 related. Again some folks need to put there money where there mouth is.

Yea, your shitting up the wrong tree talking trash to someone you are clueless about. Ive several things sitting here that will spank your *** all up and down the east coast... all you got to do is put your money where your mouth is.

Im more then happy to share my rides and builds from fun 318-s to nitrous strokers (are you?) but will be dammed if I will let some one liner fourm poster with no life who knows nothing about my world trash talk.

I was warned by someone here about the anti 318 dicks and was advised not to post about them but here we are and here I am.

This is a great site with good info via the search engine and its one thing when one posts there dislikes or objections but you seem to like to beat it into the ground which is very counterproductive to any good topic.

If your so anti 318 id be more then happy to pay for your "318 Sucks" neck tat, hell its pride month you might make some new friends.

See, isnt it much easier to be civil and act like adults vs just being a drive by dick?

Yeah,yeah,yeah...truth is all you "318 defenders" would take a 340-360 if it was cheap or free like a 318...facts...
