360 question

hi im pretty new here i have a question i was given a 79 360 its a e56 360 from what i understand its a 360 2bbl engine compression ratio is 8.5 i think, the factory slapped a 4 bbl intake on it for California and high alt. my question is, its a engine that only has 64,000 miles on it. i have a edlebrock 2177 performer plus cam, a edelbrock performer rpm intake, a Holley 750 vac. second.carb and a double roller timing chain, is this to much cam for stock 360 springs and push rods.

Not familiar with the cam but if the lift is .520 or less it should work.

I would suggest that even though 64k is low miles, what you can pick up with a fresh valve job is pretty amazing. If you have the intake off you are 20 head bolts and 12 exhaust bolts away from taking the heads off. I used to charge 475.00 to clean, mag, 4 angle valve job (for mopars) install guides, surface and assemble with positive seals and new locks.

415.00 if you don't need hard seats (I don't think you would). So either way it's not a lot of money, you get new guides and seals, a fresh updated valve job and a clean surface.

Your that far into it. Give it some thought.

It's a 270/270 - 420/420 cam it seems like a pretty mild cam but I wasn't sure
 
Eventually want to find a 89 through 91 360 the roller cam motor and build one of those Motors this is just a stop Gap
motor for now.
Why not just put a roller cam in the block you can now?
 
If the mileage is true, I would follow YR suggestion and have the heads done and add matching springs for your cam. That way you can take a look at the cylinders and see what kind of shape they are in. Put it all back together and get it tuned right and it'll probably be a nice little engine. If you decide to pull it back out, having pictures of the cylinders and a fresh valve job will help to sell it, as would a video of it roasting the tires in your A body. Probably not too much, but you'll never see 100% benefit without the matching valve springs. That cam is only like .420 lift or some such. Even still, higher than the stock cam.
 
answer to the question is....no, it's not too much. 420 lift is less than a stock 340 cam. I believe a 360 2bbl cam is .412 lift? I've run .474 lift MP cams more than once with stock valve train, no issues.

'Specially with the slooooow ramps on this particular cam.... the difference between advertised and .050" lift durations is 66 degrees ! Not much valvetrain acceleration to cause tendency to float. IMHO, the stock springs should be OK.

As for 64k miles: I have a /6 that had 59k original miles on it when I tore it down; it was just not running up to snuff. Found that it needed a .040" overbore to clean it up cylinder wear caused internal carb leaks that diluted to oil and the prior owner just did not know. So it's really impossible to say if it is any good or not 'til you pull it apart or start it up. IMHO, it's worth a shot to try running it since you already have the parts.
 
thanks guys for the help this forum is awesome the cam thats in it now according to the tec. service manual i just found is 256/256 - .410/.410 so the edelbrock cam i bought is not a whole lot larger ,and for some reason i always wanted one of those 1989-92 roller 360s though, in this state (wi) people want an arm and a leg for them though, even a core engine is expensive. maybe ill just get a set of 308 heads and keep this bottom end. again i want to thank everyone for the advice. its been awhile since i have been inside a mopar engine. i was hooked on amc's for the last 20 years but now i went back to the cars i like the most ....mopars.

Because his engine is a non roller ‘79 and would require a lot of work that isn’t needed in a later year roller block.
His best move is just to cam it has needed with a Hyd. or solid litter cam.

Take that Edelbrock cam and chop it up into fishing weights. Use accordingly.

Select a new cam, purchase the cam, lifters, springs. Equipped the heads with the springs and go from there.

Don't get caught up in the hype. You can put a roller cam in any motor. I agree with 318willrun as usual. My suggestion would be to send that came back for something a little bit bigger and still leave your springs the way they are. Doesn't Summit sell a cam and lifters with like a 440 lift or something for around a hundred bucks?. If this motor is just an interim then doing a valve job and all that sounds like a waste too. If you're planning on some big motor built in the future just work on that and leave this one alone and dependable... My-2

What block work would be needed?
 
i got the cam and lifters brand new in the box for next to nothing from a private seller, i cant send them back i have two cars i could put this motor in a 76 dart sport or a 78 dodge magnum the dart has a 318 with a 4bbl its a rebuilt engine with about 20,000 miles runs awesome. i was thinking about putting this motor in my magnum. the magnum used to have the e58 360 but that engine is long gone. the 360 has a late 70s intake manifold and a 74 or 75 thermoquad on it that has more leaks then i care to count that's why i got the rpm manifold and Holley 750, Holley's are so easy to tune i can do it in my sleep, i hate carter's i can never tune them right that's why that stock manifold and carb are garbage bound. i have heard it the other way around people hating Holley's but i have been messing with holley's for over 20 years i love em.

Now see I really like you posting this about the Holly and your experience with it. I myself am a Edelbrock guy and I'm comfortable with them. But you have been messing with them for many years and are comfortable with them and my suggestion would be to stay with them. Again if you were leaning one way or the other I would point you towards Edelbrock because LOL not meaning to start anything here but they're less prone to leaking because most of the possibilities of it leaking are above the float level. Again I'm in Edelbrock guy who sang stay with the Holly because it's what you know and it's what will be easiest for you.
And from this again I pretty much say stay with your 318 and with the motors you have and if there's a special-purpose you want something built for? then build one for that special purpose.

With the compression of that engine you can't afford to give it all away with a slow-azz Edelbrock cam.
If you crank up the cylinder pressure, well, maybe........naw, I'd still give that cam away to some chebby clown.
You know some things cost "next to nothing" for a reason.

if you put that cam into a low-compression 360, your low-rpm performance will be somewhere between slanty and sick teener. And the engine won't wake up until about 4000rpm. While it could rev to 5500 or higher with proper springs, fugetabowdit cuz with cylinder pressure down around 125 psi,With the Eddie cam, the factory 4bbl and weiner .420 lift cam woulda probably got you up to 40mph faster.Especially if you have Lame-O 3.23 gears or less. I have done dumber things tho, but not by much.
Do yourself a favor and trash that cam.
You wanna have fun with a 360, pump it up! Put some aluminum heads on it, pick a proper fast-rate roller cam to put the power where a streeter needs it and then get the cylinder pressure up to at least 185; Now yer talking advertised torque like a 440 Magnum circa 1969. Add 3.55s or so and a 2800 to 3200 TC and blow your mind in a 3400 pound ready to rock A-body.

The OE TQ on top is a smog carb and a bit difficult to work with especially with performance cams, even if there mild.

Those TQ’s have so much added stuff they become cranky once outside there normal operation. TQ’s by themselves are a little bit of a pain until you get the swing of things.

Probably about right on the static CR. Be aware that the OP's cam IS small; the duration at .050" lift 204 degrees.
Since the OP is moving long to another engine, and got all this stuff for cheap, I would not see any harm in just putting this in and running it. The more different engines one builds, the more one learns. I would advise the OP to install the cam with at an ICL of around 102-104 degree, not just dot-to-dot with the 'as-ground' 106 ICL.

Now if he was looking at buying new stuff, then I'd think differently.
 
like i said this is a engine that im not going to stick a lot of money into its just a engine i plan on having for a summer or two im sure ill find the engine that i am looking for sooner or later, i just wanted to make sure this cam would work with the stock valve springs and push rods but you guys answered that for me i had no idea it was that wimpy of a cam though.
 
Well, at least it won't bog down your low RPM's with a stock TC due to too much duration. I suspect that is what this cam was made for... just a nudge up on performance with the stock valvetrain without making an already low compression engine a dog in a simple cam-change-only upgrade.
 
well i was looking at the cam closer today and the guy sold me the wrong cam on the box it says edlebrock 2177 but on the back of the cam its stamped EDL-7177 and then the cam card also says its an edelbrock 7177 performer rpm cam now my question is that cam to big for the stock valve springs on a 79 360 you guys have been a great help so far i was just wondering. thanks here is what the cam card says Cam and Lifters, Hydraulic Flat Tappet, Advertised Duration 308/318, Lift .488/.510, Mopar, Small Block, Kit

Sorry, I was distracted.
Check with Edelbrock for there spring they have for the stock head. It’s a matching component.
