I,m sure this has been asked many times, but here goes.My 77 360,s valves are muchroomed at the top.I can get a pair of reconditioned heads with an exchange for $300.I have .030 flat top pistons and a 480 lift cam. What would be a good head gasket to use to up my compression?Or should I just go with stock? Thanks for any help!

The thin Mopar Performance composition gaskets at .020-.022 would be perfect for your application, but apparently they are not made anymore. I actually gave a set away not too long ago. DoktorX may still have them and it might be worth your while to shoot him a PM.

There are plenty of gaskets available at .040", but that's pretty much stock. Your other option would be to get a pair of Cometic gaskets custom made in a .020" thickness. This may cost you $200, so it'll be up to you if this is really worth it. I would also like to add that for these gaskets to seal properly, Cometic recommends a very specific surface finish, something you may not want to do on the deck since it doesn't sound like you've done a complete teardown. I know some people who have used a spray copper coating on the Cometics and had no leaks, but that's another call you would have to make.

Nice find! It appears I was off a few thousandths at .020-.022 vs .024-.028.

I don't think you was off..... the Mopar Performance I have on my 360 was stated .020-.028 not beginning at .024.

I went to Summit and tried to find them (that's where I bought them) but couldn't find them. They don't even list the .024-.028 from Mopar Performance!!!

I have the Mopar Performance head gaskets part number around here somewhere that I used on my motor... you know how that is. lol!

BJR Racing can tell you the number.

the old gasket from mopar was red..they are no longer offered...

after not being available for months these came out earlier this year...

these are a whitest blue in color...

but do you still need special work done to the block?

Not with the composite style gaskets of which 70aarcuda was nice enough to provide a link to.

I gave my gaskets to doktorx so I had to go by memory. I know my memory's not perfect so I figured if it was in print, that was good enough for me. :) Yeah, Summit was the first place I looked too. Maybe it's got something to do with their stupid new website, lol. Their old site was so good I use to use it as a cross reference. Oh well.......sigh

Aha! So I'm not losing my marbles. Yes, the ones I had and have used in the past were red.

Thanks for all the reply,s guys. Can I get those gaskets at Napa?Performance shop? O.k now here,s what I,ve done today.I went to look at the 91 Magnum motor and ran into a friends son, started talking about my head problem and he says..my dad has some X heads!Well I went over and bought them and some alumi. intakes.Ready for this...$200 for all!!:cheers:I,m gonna have to take them in and have them redone cause they,ve been sitting for 8-10 years.I know they atleast have comp retainers. The intakes are a pro/street and a edelbrock TM5.Which one is better? Can I use the thin gaskets with these X heads? Thanks again for help!

You can use the thinner gaskets with the x-heads.

Both of those manifolds are single plane and may be a bit too much for your combo. They should be used with a square bore carb too. You might want to clean them up and sell 'em on flea bay to offset the cost of redoing the heads. Good head work can get mighty expensive even without porting.

The TM5 was the eddy "Tarantula" manifold from back in the day. It was well liked back then, but there are better designs now. Not a bad choice for high rpm HP. It reminds me of a Holley Street Dominator in form.

I'm not familiar with the Pro//Stock manifold at all. I've never seen one.

Thanks Ramchrger!I,m gonna take the intakes in with the heads and have them glass beadded, then 4 sale.I,d like to get the Air-gap eddy and add my 750 v.s Holley.Believe it or not these heads have had some P&P work, just can,t notice from rust. They,ve been in a damp basement for years!(open plastic wrap).

That "Pro/Stock" intake on the right is the same as on my car.It works very well.Any idea who made it? I asked this question about two years ago. The first right answer wins...well...nothing.:bootysha:

Sounds like you got a great deal for 200 smackers. Make sure you get them magnafluxed before any works starts. No cracks = Rocking Deal!

Lol, I'll take a stab at it and say "Mickey Thompson". At least if I lose, I lose nothing. :toothy10: Next choice would be Dick Landy. 8)

I,ll get them magna fluxed for sure. The guy had the 340 short block also,it was .060 over and I think needed sleeves?Would it be worth anything?

Only if you got it for free. It might make a good foundation for a sleeved monster stroker of some sort, maybe for a truck.

What about the crank rods and pistons?Don,t know if the pistons would be any good? He,s got a bunch of stuff, thinks I,ll have to check it out?He had a 68 or 69 Dart GT.

That would be on a case by case basis. It would really have to be disassembled and checked to make any determination. I do want to mention a little known fact about rods. Rods have a finite life span measured in cycles. Once that limit is reached, they break. Mopar rods are pretty strong from the factory but they are still subject to this problem as are all rods and as far as I know, there is no way to really measure what any rod has seen in the past.

I just dropped off the heads at the machine shop to be re-done,once I get word back on the valves(any good?)if not stainless are going in.Also ordered the Mr.Gasket head gaskets pt#1121.Thanks for help Ram!

The Xheads are in getting done,RPM Air-Gap intake and MSD ignition on it,s way!I,m done screwing with underhood wiring, after I hook this up!LOL.Hoping to be out racing before my Vacation is over Aug.25/09.:clock:
