$50 Craigslist 360 EXTREME budget rebuild??

Finally a morning off! Might have to work this afternoon
So this morning I would like to finish the bottom - the oilpan. And the water pump. Then a major cleaning and re organization of the work area to move into the heads and intake. As in- we've made the decision on what carb and intake so pick the others up and make more floor space.
I'm takin my riddlen (coffee) and soon I'll start fiddlin !

On that valve spring discussion I need to clarify in my head something - 318 and 360 springs are the same install hight, but the the 360 springs have more resistance for heavier valves ?

a 318 2bbl and 360 2bbl will have about 80 lbs closed and about 175 lbs open. Same diameter, same install height (non rotators), and free spring length was about 2 inches. The larger (heavier) 360 valve did not matter to the factory.

• A factory 340 had about 90 lbs closed, and about 200 open. Folks back then would throw a set of headers on a 340 and spin it to 6 grand without a thought.

IF something is loose, you MUST find out "what". Forget the rockers, when those springs/valves are assembled, there should be around 80 lbs of seat pressure if they are stock, leaving nothing "loose". Other than that, assemble away.

• If your machinist will check 'em for free (offer him a $10), I'd have all 32 springs checked and use the ones that check out with the highest retention.

Cheapo is the point!! I desperately want to spend money on it but I can't! That would be against the rules. Believe me I was on Summit last night looking at the springs! I just can't do it it's against the rules!

Oh and by the way since I'm not using that intake manifold and carburetor that I paid $50 for and am going head and using the carburetor that I already have and the intake manifold A friend gave me the grand total is at $300 now that would be $50 for the motor and tranny, $100 for the gasket kit the freeze plug kit and a couple other little miscellaneous things to make $100 order from Summit for free shipping. And of course a hundred and fifty for the machine work. 300. Now this does not Account for all the cleaning products brushes small tools and so forth but these are the main expenses.

Now you know how I felt trying to run with a Factory '73 340 Duster with 3.21's just by throwing less than 500 into a 318 2bbl w/2.76 gears LOL and manifolds....
And... I had to buy the cam, intake and carb ...... found exhaust valves were pretty shot and had to buy them too....
Got it done, though. 497.00 bucks and 94 mph..... and looking to improve !

Make sure the pick up is touching the bottom of the pan.

That should be close enough, but the pick up should touch the bottom of the pan when the pan is bolted up. That's the way the pick up was designed. Many make the mistake of using .250-.375 clearance between the pan and that pick up, but they should touch.

So I did a very very quick grind on under the seat. Not interested in spending time there on these heads. Bought grinding compound ? Not lapping compound? And that little wooden suction cup thing and going for it.

Put a little bluing on the valve and the seat before you lap them. Makes it easier to see the seat with your old assed vision.

1/4 tap exhaust smog holes and bought little 1/4 allen plugs. Skipped gooping water pump as I remembered I'd like to mock up the alternater brackets first.

don't twirl like a boy scout trying to start a fire. two ways to do this:

1. hand valve grinder (where you turn the handle and it goes two steps forward, one step back)... or....
2. a drill and a hose

Not to bad. That's the other reason I went with the 360 heads, the 318 heads had been knurled before and were very loose on top of that. I know where your going with that...
