I'm getting the 318 bare block ready for hot tanking and honing and wanted to know how far to go in terms of removing plugs.

All of the freeze plugs are out and all that remains are the oil gallery plugs on the front (2), the large set screws on the back (3), and the hidden plugs buried down in the rear main near the seal. It looks like there are two of them, one on either side. My manual seems to indicate there is only one, though.

When you all strip down a block for cleaning, do you remove ALL of the plugs, including the buried ones? How do you get them out?

It seems that none of the expansion plug kits come with an extra plug(s) for those rear main holes.

The one buried in the rear of the block is accessible by using a small piece of round stock down the hole where the oil pressure sending unit screws in. The rear main cap has to be off otherwise it won't come all the way out.

Hope this helps.

If you get a full block kit, you will get all the plugs necessary. Clevite kit #: 219-9420 PE113R expansion plug kit steel.

Thanks!

I was wrong, the Milodon kit at Summit doesn't come with enough plugs but the Proform kit seem to have all of them... so far. I keep finding more!

There was another plug in the left gallery, just in front of the distributor hole. Naturally the bolt I ground down to make a 5/16" square head out of was too long so I had to make another, shorter one!
