Diesel Trucks

-
Ha. my 95 cummins has no smog crap!! Wife and I made a 350 mi. run and brought back a 77 volare wagon other day. Truck has 230,000 mi and still is the same joy to drive as the day I bought it new. Ok so I admit pulling the tag along empty going there was a little rougher in that 3500.
I was hoping our new admistration's EPA director would make all this smog crap on Diesels a thing of the past. NO way new diesel will last 200K. miles. To much expensive crap to go wrong or plug up.

Have you ever had to replace a head gasket on a diesel??? I don't know a shop anywhere that would touch any of them for under $4k. Many shops won't even do it for logistic reasons. Different year/brand/models require more or less. Almost all trucks will need to be stripped from the firewall forward, and some need the cab removed. Anybody who is going to go that far isn't just going to slap it back together, and guarantee their work. It always includes AT LEAST a trip to the machine shop for head resurfacing. Now you've tied up 2-3 service bays and a gantry for at least a week.
Where do you come up with this ****?

Cummins is the only one you could even consider doing in your drive way. And that head weighs a freakin TON! You almost need a cherry picker to get it out and back in.

You've obviously never walked that road. I have. You can let Google be your guide.
If your getting all your knowledge about diesel truck problems from google searches that explains your attitude towards diesel's. You can get the internet to tell you what ever you want to believe. O and Im on my 3rd F-350 diesel, my last one i traded in with 210,000 ran like a champ, I've also had 5.9 cummins, in several trucks so ya I've walked that road for years.

For Ford, Cab has to come off for almost anything. BUT new 6.7 you can replace the turbo with the cab in place.

The ONLY thing wrong with new Diesels are the price and the smog crap. And the smog stuff is what drives up the cost. LOTS of deleted diesels running a long time, BUT not in sunny California for very long. The "smog police" see a truck smoking, you get pulled over, and to a smog check station you will go. Lots of trucks around here from out of state rolling coal, Marines from Camp Pendelton, even they are having issues now.

Ford designed it that way, if you have a lift its very easy to pick the cab up, if you want to change the heads in you garage you can do it without pulling the cab.

It's about a grand to just have the def filter cleaned which is required at 100,000 miles, no thanks I'll spend that money and pull that crap off. I have also read that with def and egr off the 6.7 gain mph.
Mines a dually too with 4.10 gears getting 24-26mph open road with just suit cases in the bed and extra snacks.
The DPF filter cleaning is a joke. The Dodge dealer by my shop uses a plug in programer and a flat trailer with a couple pallets of rain soaked concrete. They pull up and down rt287 to get everything hot. The guys there have told me that the harder you use the truck the better. The guys who haul groceries are at the dealer all the time to get forced regens with the trailer.

No my info is earned. I'm saying if somebody doesn't believe the cost they can go hit the search button.

While my truck is not a 360 magnum, it is equipped with a 357 magnum... I love South Dakota!
I bet it would be cheaper to replace a 360 Magnum than it would that 357...
Again my buddy's fuel injectors are out for two grand plus and he drives a $400 minivan. for less than $200 you can get a 360 Magnum from the wrecking yard with a 6-month warranty...

Injectors a crazy expensive!!! For real...

I know of guys with trucks, that they are still paying for, OOS for huge engine repair bills. Shameful . But some asked for trouble with tuners. Grenaded them.

That's what my buddy tells me. I was just trying to post a picture of our trucks together there almost identical. Except for that was the last time I ever seen him in the truck. He still drives a Dodge.....

MINIVAN!....LOL...

When I get my tunner I just want to delete the filter and egr and maybe just add a little tune nothing crazy. Will be a happy day when I get all that crap off.

In Riverside CA? You wont be able to register it. Every two years smog check for Diesels.

They dont even look just plug in a reader make sure theres no codes, and pop the hood, most dont even know what to look for. Hopefully we get to move out of this state soon. At least the shop I took it too before didnt even look underneath.

Not the checks I have been thru. They defiantly look for the DPF under there. AND EGR. AND software version. They are not just looking for codes, they are looking for lots of things. Like the last time the ECU was flashed, how many times the ignition has been cycled since the last re-flash.

I've learned that bigger diesels like anything 3500 and up need routine maintenance far more than passenger vehicles. And stick with that schedule. If you are driving and you hear or feel a slight break or hub grind? It's already too late. The damage due to truck and component's own weight can be really eye opening. Can't treat like a car or small truck.

My first head gasket adventure was a real eye opener. The usual, blowing/sucking coolant, ect. Got the 6-10k estimate and about fell over. Just out of warranty of course. Hey, I'm a gear head I'll do it myself. Strip the truck from the firewall forward and tried to lift the cab with 4 employees. Well, couldn't get it high enough with the engine in the way. So we took the bed off, and scooted it back. Now we have a $65k truck torn the **** apart. Steering, brakes, heat, ac, electronics, EVERYTHING torn apart! Cab sitting where the bed was. Resurfacing heads ect. Half way through I realized that $10k was a bargain. I highly doubt any of the diesel fans here have ever had a real repair.

I've owned all 3 brands, they all have issues. Although I'm currently done with diesels, Duramax were the best to me. The only issues were the cp4's and very early injectors.

Oh gotcha. It will be a while yet till I buy one, I'm only 56000 miles, just plan to do it before the 100,000 mark
