I was talking to someone this weekend about auto restoration. This guy was telling me that the fender bolts were not painted body color, what ? Ive done many mopars & I never gave it much thought. I know for a fact that some were. The T/As & AARs were black. I got to thinking of the mpoars that I have done in the past & it seems kind of funny that the area of the fenders were the top bolts are had paint on them, but the bolts were rusty. I also know for a fact that the cars were painted with the body panels on. I have seen unrestored A bodies & B bodies with the back side of the hoods & trunk lids with no paint. What are your thoughts ?

I have personally seen them painted, My 74 was a one owner car and they are painted.

The fender bolt heads were painted on my 70 dart. I don't think the threaded shaft was painted. I think that they were painted after assembly.

I've never seen them not painted. My 78 powerwagon was ordered new, fender bolts are painted, same with the dart, polara and the 3 3rd gen chargers I had, all painted

They were painted body color. Same time engine compartment and fender flange was painted.

Sounds like you where talking to a Chevy guy about fender bolts.

T/A and AAR's were painted body color too, just painted black over that so you don't see a strip of body color through the hood to fender gap.

Back side of hoods and trunk where always painted body color too. Not as heavy as outside, but still painted. So more tendency to surface rust through light paint with engine heat in rust belt.

Factory replacement over the counter parts were light black or Grey primer. Usually with part number stenciled in them. Even more tendency to surface rust through.

I thought they were painted. As for the hood & trunk lid, on my one owner barracuda & my dads 68 gtx the back side of them had no paint, even the braces.

The person you were talking to is misinformed. Should ask how many restorations he's done. Bolts were painted.

painted of course! chevy guys tend to think everything in every car was painted black under the hood! ha

you have to remember these old cars are basically 40-50 years old. the days of finding an unmolested car is long gone., basically very unlikely.

I had a 66 Hemi Charger that I personally restored, at A car show, I got dinged because the fender bolts were.......PAINTED! I said, :wtf:J Was told "the Hemi cars had zinc plated bolts there". Really? So to make them happy in the future I replaced them.

I don't know about that. All of 3 my A-bodies had original paint when I got them. My butterscotch Dart was pretty original, not perfect but it had never been apart. All of the factory paint marks were still visible on the suspension parts, rear axle, torsion bars etc. My Duster was the same way, not perfect but pretty darn original. Heck even the body on the GK6 GT was pretty untouched. I mean, the entire drivetrain and most of the interior was missing, but what was actually there was original. I guess it just depends on what your standard is.

And all of them had body color painted fender bolts. :D

Painted,
I have a big box of fender and other bolts from many cars over the years I stripped....pick a color, they all are painted!

Underside of hood and trunk is painted. Painted all at same time while attached to body when inside trunk and engine compartment is painted.

See pics of trunk lids here:

I wish I would've taken pictures of the underside of the hood & trunk lid of my 69 barracuda. The back side of the bracing & the back lip on them had no paint. Its as if they couldn't reach that area.

Yep painted. He must gave been a chevy guy their fenders are painted seperately, then bolted to the black inner fenders and radiator support. MoPar A/B/E body tye fenders, doors, hoods, and trunklids were all installed and aligned before primer and paint. Drivelines all installed from the bottom. No need for the hood to be off.

'T/A and AAR's were painted body color too, just painted black over that"

This area was painted black first then masked off when dry & then the body color was shot.

It required a lot less masking / materials this way.

Yes I did a AAR cuda for my cousin & that is what I found. Black first then the color.

our 69 dart that we got rid of a few years ago was really original.. mostly original paint..
the 70 dart we have now as far as anyone who has looked at it can tell is the original paint.

there was just a 70 dart for sale on this forum for sale that was all original paint and all..

there are a lot more untouched ones then ya think out there..

A friend of mine just bought his original 72 duster 340 4spd back. He is the 2nd & 4th owner. It has been sitting in a garage since 1976. Other than the wheels it is 100 % original. The guy he sold it to, be bought it back from. That guy wrecked it. He went to a local dealership back then & bought a new fender, hood & 340 grill. I will be getting my hands on the duster this winter for a restore. It has 36,000 original miles. So, they are out there

HA lot of crap... makes for good discussion! I admit to playing heavily in this old Mopar hobby since mid 80's, so........

I lived in Missouri for 40 years before moving to S Tx last fall, Mo is not populated ( thank God) like the N E so never had near the number of cars back East. YES for sure survivors or sorta survivors ( unmolested), keep popping up, mainly in the pedestrian flavors ( mostly A bodies, slants, 318's)..., NOT the high performance "muscle" car types. those have been sought after for all these decades. however, a picked over parts car sitting n a field is not UN- molested!? those are even hard to find!??? ha

it is wonderful to find these old cars that have had the good life sitting in garage all these years. but, most parts of the country, a car has lead a good life to just have a somewhat roof over its head most of the time!!? ha
