finally found the car i wanted but you will hate me

I have literally had about 20 of the f-body cars (firebirds and camaros) and some of the newer ones also.

they can be fun cars, they handle nice, the 305's are not that quick in stock form. one of the first things i always did was put a "shift kit" in the trannys.....drop the pan and use 3/8s nuts to block the accumulator valve and boost line pressure.

watch for leaky t-tops

the electric motor hatchs ,rear defrosters and rear wipers when equipped were troublesome.

LOW riding cars so go slow over speed bumps and what not.

they arent bad cars though.....sure don't got nothing on a mopar though lol

The berlinetta was a confusing package.....because it was the "luxory" version but was the stripped down version at the same time.

no ground effects,no louvered hood, some didnt have the rear spoilers.....I personally did not like the looks of them compared to a trimmed out z28 or RS.......but the creature comforts inside were pretty cool, such as all digital dash...digital gauges, digital radio and so on.

most had power windows and locks and also power seats if I remember correctly.

other wise there was not much to them.

and it should have TBI fuel system (throttle body injection) I think mostly the irocs used the TPI (tuned port).

the throttle boddys are easy to modd and snag an easy 10 to 15 horse out of....any chevy I have had with TBI I do the mod to.

get a tbi gasket rebuild kit from most parts stores and the new gasket kits come with 2 diffrent sized injected gaskets....one in stock form and the other about 1/4" in height....if you use the 1/4" one it will raise the injectors up out of the bowls higher and allow for the fuel to gain more of a cone shape and helps atomize the fuel better and doesnt heat soak the injecters near as much also.

and around the bowls there is about a 1/4" aluminum lip cast into the TBI....take a angle grinder or dremel and grind that lip off and then take and roll the top of the TBI into the bowls...then sand and polish them a bit.

works like a charm.

just a couple things i thought id throw out there.

if you dream car is an iroc then you'd be much happier holding out for one.

the one you posted does look nice and clean...good luck.

I had an '84 Camaro Olympic edition with the 2.8. It was one of the biggest POS's I've ever owned, and I've owned quite a few.

also the exhaust on these cars goes from the manifolds to a y pipe.....then single all the way back to a single inlet dual outler muffler (V8) single outlet (v6).

but alot of people put the dual outlets on them even if they have a 6 popper.

The Berlinetta was intended for chicks of all ages. All of the big hair babes of the 80s drove them around SoCal. Up in Frisco, the guys drove them. Wink wink

I would keep your truck whatever it is, My brother had a berlinetta when we were younger and it was junk, 305 is one of the worst motors chevy made. Those things were notorious for electrical problems.

You obviously never had a Vega then, if you think a 305 is one of the worst motors Chevy made. Or how about the 262 and 267 smallblocks they had in the late 70's? I think "worst" is being equated with slow here.

Anyway that's a carbed 305. A cam and manifolds will wake it up, but the rear in those is puny and a proper fitting exhaust for those isn't cheap. You really can only run one large pipe because of the way the floorpans are.

I like those cars, but as nice as that one is I wouldn't do anything to it but drive it on weekends and enjoy it. It's definitely rare now.

You'd be better off with a fox body mustang than that camero, resale is better as well as aftermarket potential and the ability to unload it when you finally realize its garbage. Ever wonder why you can pick up that body style all day long on craigslist for 500-1000 bucks in good shape? I could think of any number of cars that your better off with than that camero.

Agreed x2.

The Camaro feels like you are sitting on the ground and the exhaust situation and very hard to upgrade rearend made me not want another. They'll outhandle and outbrake a Mustang, but they won't outrun one stock for stock, not even an 5.7 IROC. That 150hp 305 and 2.73 pegleg will get old very quickly.

I'd pass and put your resources elsewhere.

PS, this is a CARBED LG4 305 in this year. Exact same engine found in Caprices, Monte Carlo's(not the SS), and every G-body variant. They didn't get the L03 TBI 305 until 1988.

I had a TBI 86 camaro z28....pretty sure it came factory with it,could be wrong..

I know the cross fire injection which had a throttle body (not the TBI style I am referring to though) was available in 1982 when that body style came out.

TPI came in 85

(edit: come to think of it...my 86 was carbed, I was thinking of my 90 RS I had... your right....it wasnt until late 87ish that TBI was available)

ewww go for an older or new camero if you gona get one.

kinda looks like same body as a trans-am, aka k.i.t car, aka my nieces car, still dont like :P

I bet its FI like a Trans-am is.

if its going to be a daily,go for it.:thumrigh:
I wouldnt throw too much money into the motor.fix the smoking issue, tune it up,change the belts, plugs, etc, and just drive it.

That's what i would do. I think in stock trim those early TBI 305 cars would run like mid 16s :toothy3:

I know you said you don't want to race the car, but consider how many modern economy cars can get on the highway quicker than that.

I still can't figure out why you can't tell if it's a V6 or a V8.
Maybe count the spark plugs on one side of the engine and multiply that X2.
That's what i would do.

That was my first thought too. Then he said he was going to pull the valve covers and count the cylinders??

Ive found a 85 chevy camaro berlinetta that my dads best friend has, 97,000 miles t tops red with red interior, 305, but i dont understand what the berlinetta package is, he will trade me for my truck, only thing wrong with it is that it smokes at start, but thats the valve stem seals.

heres exactly what it looks like

A friend of mine in high school had the same year and model as that car... only difference is it was black. He always said... Berlinetta, the Cadillac of Camaros....

:laughing: He's just a kid guys. We were all young at one time and made some not so smart decisions.

reminds me of a kid looking at my buddy's old 5.0 Mustang.

The kid asked my friend if it was a V8, he said "count the plug wires..."

a few seconds later he goes "...nine???"

I guess if you count the coil wire too you get a V-9 :D
