My ear/ears have been ringing for 8 straight days now and I am so busy at work that I don't have time to go to the doc.Starting to drive me a little crazy.Anybody have any simple cures I can try myself? So far my wife hasn't found out but I can't hear very well so it's getting harder to hide it. Is there a doctor in the house? :dontknow:

I have Tinitis, Ringing in the ear for over 2 years now. No remmidy i know of. Its Ok when theres a bit of noise but when its quiet........It kind of sucks. You should see your Dr. Just to make sure thats what it is. :coffee2:

I agree with Nite Moves, it's probably Tinitis, basically a fancy word for nerve damage in the ear. And, as the Doc will tell you, there is no remedy!! How do I know??? I have had Tinitis since March 20th 2000, 3 days after playing a St. Patricks day gig with my band. It wasn't a particularly loud gig, but it doesn't need to be to cause nerve damage. Have you done anything that could be considered loud lately, such as air chiseling or sawzall cutting on your car?? Gone to any concerts??

As your Doc will tell you, it's not cureable, and an earpiece will only amplify sound and drive you nuts!! Most times I don't even notice the ringing, I'm just so used to it, but when it first happened, it was almost unbearable!! Good luck to you my friend, and sorry to hear of this!! Geof

played sat night and my ears are still ringing. self conflicted i guess but cant get used to the ear plugs.

I've had it for over 35 years.........

I'm wondering how that new "pill" might work........A supplement.......Quietus, or something like that.......Anyone try it yet ??

Hearing protection...... This is why they tell you to use it.
No such thing in the 70'es, My doctors have said the same , Nothing to help it ...
But I did learn this while I was at Tony Field's house, buy a small fan and let it run while you are sleeping, it does wonders  Thank you Tony :coffee2:

don't panic yet thinking you have tinitis, have it checked out by a doc, it could be something harmless like earwax buildup and that can easely be removed in a couple of minutes

I have had ringing for years now, just seems to happen if you work on cars any amount, doesn't bother me

The pill for tinitis my friend at work tried it a couple of years ago and didn't help and expensive. You have to take it for up to 60 days before You get results. I have had tinitis for years started out as occasional ringing and went to all the time and I have to wear hearing aids ( sucks)

I've had constant ringing in my ears for many years too. I blame it on the textile mill.
My family doctor said injecting novicane directly into the blood stream would stop the ringing for a few hours but there was no perminant cure.
About a year ago there was a episode of The Doctors tv show that showcased a new technique.. They were suplimenting sound at frequencies which would fool the brain.
I didn't understand all the details. There is hope though.

I have it occasionly as well.......gets annoying quick....

Your diet, especially salt, can affect this. But if it becomes chronic, good luck. I've had it for years, part of it probably from Navy jets. Yes, it can get worse than distracting.

I think what you're refering to is called destructive interference. Basically, if you have a sine wave and you introduce another sine wave on top of it that is the same frequency and amplitude, just 180 degrees out of phase, they cancel each other out. Kind of like a reverse amplication.

I've had this ringing for 5 years now, Got the time this summer to have it checked. Nothing can be done. Get's worse at night going to bed when no noise...I put the tv on sleep for 30min to drown the constant ringing....AH the fun of getting old

They are starting to use that technology in diesel trucks, I believe. Imagine 2 identical tuning forks: Strike them both and they will resonate together and their volume will rise and fall rythmically depending how close they are in pitch. If you look at it on a oscilloscope, the wave pattern would look like perfect "infinity" signs end to end when the sound is muted (cancelled), and a regular sinusoidal(?) when its loudest. But if it is nerve damage, the destructive interference would still have to be picked up by your silia in the ear attached to the same damaged nerve endings? Good luck, I launched my M-47 Shoulder fired anti tank missile without ear plugs once, and they rang for about 2 days, but thank goodness, it went away.

I found it still helps even after you screw up your hearing. The ringing never goes away but if you wear hearing protection for every loud noise around you after a few weeks/months the ringing gets better--softer. That means your hot rod car also if the exhaust is loud. Lawn mowers, leaf blowers, drill motors, etc. Always wear ear muffs/ear plugs--or even both. The longer you can go without hearing loud sounds the better the ringing gets.

Least that how it is for me. If I go without ear muffs and my ears ring loudly, it takes days for it to die down. Never ever goes 100% away but it can get very soft that you won't noticed it all the time.

Once you have it, regardless of it's cause, all the hearing protection in the world ain't gonna make a difference...........The guy is asking for a REMEDY..not a rebuke...........

Now see I found that to be 100% wrong. Over a few months of wearing hearing protection for every loud noise, the ringing does get better. Might even take years--its been 20 years for me, maybe it took a few years before it really helped. I just know for me hearing protection does still help me. I'm 47, btw

Wow,I'm not alone on this. Thanks for all the replies. I guess you just have to learn to live with it.Sorry to hear about all you guys that have had this so long.I was concerned about it because a while ago there was an article in the newspaper about a man who committed suicide after about 25 years with tinitis, leavng a note saying he could not stand it any longer. When things are quiet definitley it is very noticable. I will talk to my doc when I get the chance but I don't think my waiting is going to make much difference. Well,at least when I'm in the car it goes away. :D

Good thread for everyone, I see young people with Ipods blasting in their ears and feel bad for what's in store for them later.

I have had it since 1999. been bounced back and forth to every specialist in the SE. I was involved in an explosion as a practical joke and have inner ear damage, nerve damage and even mild brain damage. My tinnitus has been measured at 9K hertz at 200 decibles. That's about the same as a jet airplane engine. All the time. I have a noise cancelling hearing aid that used to help, but now even that does not work. The only thing I have found that even touches it is laying off soft drinks, salt, caffine, sugar....all that stuff. But it's not much of a difference. Not for me. I have had to pull over in my truck because I cannot tell which end is up. I've had to let my wife drive. I fall flat on my face from time to time when I overdo it. All this is amplified in the summer heat. Loss of coordination, balance, lack of concentration, insomnia, confusion, memory loss and the list goes on. I was part of a case study on tinnitus from late 99 to 2005. The doctors said mine was the worst case they'd ever seen. I hope yours is something temporary. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.
