How to remove pistons without removing the engine: 440

-
I bet its the flexplate,it will sound like a rod at idle when the bolts on the crank come loose.

I'd just pull the engine. What if it's not a wrist pin? What if it's the big end ?

How did he get the rings on the pistons without removing them? Man this guy is good, no wonder I could never make any money as a mechanic.
I believe the thought process was.........If you get the cylinder wall rough enough, you don't need new rings.

The man wants to pull the piston with the engine in the car. I believe his mind is set. I say let him. He will learn things he will never forget. That too is a good thing.

I once told a person very dear to me he was putting an engine together will too much valve spring pressure. He argued. I let him build it. He won't do that again. It totaled out to be a $6,500 mistake. He is lot better mechanic now. And he listens better.

I'm removing the pistons because it was making a horrible sound and I thought it was a broken valve spring but it wasn't. I was told that it was a wrist pin. I don't have a cherry picker and I have no one to help me at all. I have the confidence to do it. I changed a 1984 Subaru gl from automatic 4wd to 4 speed dual range 4wd and did it completely by myself only has my brother help me lift the old motor out and the new one in. I shut the car off as soon as it started make the horrible noise and was told there's a chance that I didn't hurt the block but only the piston so I'm taking them out to see what's the problem.

Yeah I know how that is. I used to be in the same boat when I was younger. I eventually bought myself a cherry picker and got my own garage and that made life easier. Later on in life I got rid of the cherry picker since I built a shop with an overhead crane. Pulling an engine is easy by yourself when you have a remote controlled overhead crane!

Yeah I've changed #8 rod bearing twice since 2004, and I need to do it again. So far I've always caught it early enough. One of these days I guess I'll have to do it right.

And it's surprising how much like a rod that cracked flex-plate can sound.
I've only ever heard a wrist pin once, and there was no mistaking that,in my case.I can't imagine a wrist-pin one day to just up and make a horrible noise. That sounds a lot more like a rod. Pull the pan and go look for it. I don't see any shame in working from the bottom. But if the crank is done, well then, she'll have to come out. Then you can go find a chain-hoist and a stout tree-limb,or rafter, or a cherry-picker,etc.

I built a 383 in my kitchen once, then had four friends from work come over and we carried it out to the car with a chain slung over a 4x4... I think common sense finally kicked in and I rented a cherry picker to actually put it under the hood :D
