Inner spring removal advice

If it's a Hughes cam, remove the inner springs. Jmo.

Just be safe and do what Hughes says, remove the inner springs, if not, possibly remove cam and tear down your'e new motor to get all the metal out. Easy choice for me.

Have never removed inner springs. Never gotten bit.
That said i use the lifters with the oil hole on the face.
Just do your homework and get it to fire right up
Hughes, Comp and Howards cams
Lube the cam up good and use good breakin oil

I would remove them, I have the comp shaft compressor works great. I would add a small extendable magnet to catch the keepers and a piece of pvc pipe to place over the retainer and give it a tap. Sometimes the keepers stick and a slight rap with the pvc pipe and a hammer loosens them. Look really close at each one after you have reinstalled to make sure the keepers are correctly seated.

We have 4 bracket car with hughes cams....never have removed the inter spring...I use Zddp paste on the cam...

as far as valve springs...I have an old Ed Hamburger shaft style valve spring compressor...does a great job...It would be simple for someone to copy it....the shaft runs the length of the head with plates that bolt on to the end of the heads...

What about removing the inners if you have the block tubed with no oil supply to the lifters?

I'm thinking of just modifying my engine run in stand instead of breaking in the engine in the race car. That stand was made for early Hemis. It started life as a engine cradle for a irrigation pump. It came with a '56 industrial Hemi I rescued out a field in Oklahoma. Never used it for anything other than a Hemi.

If you're still kicking around ideas...I have the tool like RRR shows in post #2, except the handle is just flat metal. I welded an old 1/2" drive socket to the top, right in the middle. This way spring changes are a breeze, I use my 1/2" ratchet or even the cordless drill to turn the handle and squeeze those big 'ol springs..

Ever have a compressed spring slip out of one of those spring compressors like shown in the post above and in post 2 ? I have
The spring shot across the garage like a rocket. Was enough for me to permanently retire that style of compressor.

Nope..I keep my hand on the sides until I'm ready to pop it off the spring.
