Javelin

There is a guy on eBay selling complete nicely rebuilt AMC 360s for $3700. So we are saving the mounts and brackets and stripping this block down just to have since it’s original to the car.

This old thing is rough, but I can save it….View attachment 1715844378
$3700 for a rebuilt engine, flip a coin, hard to tell what you will get.
Find a local machine shop and fix what you have, and know what is in it.

Happy New Year! Aaron was over at the office pulling the interior out of the Javelin. The front seats are the wrong year but we may recover them and use them. He reports the floor is badly rusted through and when we emptied the trunk we found a hole a basketball will fit through. Good news is all the stainless for around the glass was inside the car and in decent shape…

So today we cut the headers and cherry bombs off the car and emptied the interior to confirm what we thought which was that we had catastrophic rust damage. So far we need at least a left front frame rail, left A pillar, full floor pan, rockers, and full trunk pan and lower quarter patches. I just love this old thing and I’m going to do what needs to be done. I’m going to send it out a shop to do all the bodywork…..

My son Aaron has been working along with me on my Duster project Father-Son 1974 Duster Project
since he was 14. He's 20 now! It's still not done but as you all know, they are never really "finished"

He has hauled a few basket cases home since then wanting to make something out of nothing as we did with our Duster, but has traded most of them for other things. Here is what all that wheeling and dealing has gotten him.

I have agreed to him keeping it at the house as long as he keeps it covered and does not make a holy mess out of the spot behind the garage I'm letting him park it.
It's a 73 Javelin that had an AMC 360/904 in it as built, but now has the AMC 304 in it.
It is complete but the quarters are bad and the rest of the body needs a lot of attention.

It's not a Mopar, but it does have some Chrysler sourced Parts.

Looks like I'll be pitching in when he needs a hand...
I, too, have a Javelin as my "other" car- they are a blast to drive, and share engineering, if not parts. Parts for these are not that hard to find- Jeep and IHC used the motors thru 91, and they used Chrysler transmissions- lots of repo parts too

I have ben lusting for a decent orner of doorsJavalin project, and one came up for sale just 5 -6 mi down the road. '68 roller. So I go look. Lets see what I found. Pretty decent body, l rear qtr been replaced, ok only other rust is corner of door an maybe a spot at rear window.
But seats were sent off to upholstery shop. Guy went out of business and all is gone. Grill was busted and gone. Hood was gone. The PO was a drag racer and butchered the firewall and K member. Was a 4 speed but changed over to auto col no pedals or hump.
No title.
Wow that $1500 car got to looking aweful expensive quick!
Grill, seats, hood not eng/trans!!! It all adds up..quick!
I saw a good 70 roller AMX sell other day for $2900. Gone in a few hours!

I still don't care how rusted this one is. I like the one year only 70 body best and it's pretty easy to get the metal this one needs, which is a lot!
I think I may even make it a 4 speed car as well, why not?
I have a glass guy coming to take the glass out of it tomorrow....

All the glass came out of this poor wretched thing today!

Nothing broke in the process!!

We bought us a harbor freight engine crane today and weather permitting the motor and trans come out of the car tomorrow.

We have decided to build the original 304 V8

We are going to build it like this one, and we are going to investigate pistons that can get us some more compression.

About 6” of snow overnight, cold and windy today but we managed to to get the motor mounts unbolted and the trans crossmember is taken out. We pulled the radiator, but there is so much space between the center of the bumper and the fan blades, we are going to need to remove the bumper, supports and valence so the engine crane can get about 20” closer to the front of the motor so we can use the 3/4 ton setting on the hoist.
I also discovered there was about 3-1/2 gallons of water in the motor.

Had this original owner '72 Javelin/AMX many years ago.......with original tires
401 4 speed ..........one of 8 AMC's I owned over the years

Engine and trans are out. I’m going to hang on to the block but I have been wondering about what the nearly 4 gallons of water we drained out of it. It’s gotta be a mess inside.

Doors are off too. This floor or lack there of might scare some, but I look at it and envision it all out back together.

IIRC all the models of the same years shared the same door handles.....truth? Friends mom had a Hornet wagon with the six. Total bomber.

I found these 800 pound capacity casters at a local industrial supply. The pressure treated lumber supports are bolted to the end of the frame rails and the one on the rear of the car is braced back to the frame in the center. The car is stripped down to the unibody now and I guess it weighs just under a thousand pounds. It’s easy to move around and when we move it to the Bodyshop I figure we will chock it up off the wheels and binder strap it to the rollback bed. Once the bottom of the car is repaired and primed I’ll move the casters under the car so the quarters and valance can go back together.

Coming along nicely.

What transmission is that ? I don’t recognize it , could it be a Borg Warner ?

Wow thats rad. I like the A scheme but I’d take whatever I could get. Such a special car.
This B Scheme card destroyed the myth that the first 1000 of 1500 cars were A Schemes.
This guy ordered a Hurst SC Rambler, ordered what he thought was the A Scheme car and the B Scheme showed up at dealer.
He had no idea about the other color scheme.
