I have a 440 and a 360. Both have Jensen Distributers from the factory. Can they be swapped from one to the other?

No they cannot, the shafts are different lengths.

And they rotate in opposite directions, so the advance mechanisms wouldn't work.

The only distributors that fit 440s are made for 413/426 either wedge or hemi and 440, and the oddball old RB 383 which you are very unlikely to come across.

Wouldn’t the RB 383 have used the same distributor as the 413?

Only the odd ball 383RB engine. The 383B distributor shaft is much shorter than the 413/426/440. It is the same as a 400 though.

I've seen FIRST HAND a 383 distributor running in a 318. .....and for quite some time.

I've seen big block distributors in a small block, too (with an adapter collar doohickey that kept the intermediate shaft from pushing up)- but it was in a reverse rotation marine engine!

How did it reach the drive gear? Did they change the center shaft? The B engines have the shortest of all the shafts.

Nope. @Bighead440 is familiar with it, too. Maybe he'll chime in. I know he remembers it. He did some work on the truck. 383 distributor running in a 318.
