When upgrading from points to electronic ignitions, I've seen the orange/gold boxes mounted everywhere- including under the dash. Is there a consensus on the best location? I was thinking heat may be a factor in longevity, so toward the front up closer to the grill openings or on the firewall? For the stock look, does mounting under the dash (longer wire) affect the performance of the unit?

I've seen a few a body barracudas mount on the fenderwell, so I did the same.
No averse effects and the wiring was plenty long enough.

Go Pertonix and hide it inside the distributor IMO!

If you go Chrysler think about SB or BB and locate it near the dizzy away from heat as best you can.

Lots are choosing the GM route, in that case I say the trunk so you can't see it! JMO.

I mounted mine upside down on the horizontal panel under the dash when I converted my '66 Valiant to electronic in '74. I sandwiched an aluminum plate between the box and the panel to ensure a good long-term ground. I transferred the box (and the aluminum plate) to my '65 Barracuda in '77 when I transplanted the 340 from the Valiant to that car. It was still working great when I pulled everything out 2 years ago. I like keeping electronics as cool as possible!

I mounted my electronics inside on the passenger side of the firewall. To keep the MSD box cool and to keep clutter at a minimum under the hood.

Cool is important. Where ever it goes, the case HAS to be solidly grounded.

And no, there is no concensus on the location, except that it is a bad idea to put it in the trunk LOL

In the glove box. Get rid of the cardboard liner and you have a ton of space in there to hide all kinds of electronics. If you need storage space, use your trunk.

I hid a couple of relays on the bottom of the battery tray. It would be fine there. I made a Carbon fiber shelf for the glove box area. All the other electronics mount to it. You can hear the MSD buzzing. Getting a bit busy in that area now though.

If your battery is back there you could easily run your box back there. I'm also talking MSD.
Uh, no. No, no NO!!! Not only will the pickup wires not like it, but the output to the coil will likely cause interference with other circuits, INCLUDING THE IGNITION ITSELF

Mounted mine next to the glove box as recommended in the instructions.
I was a Mopar conversion done about 7 years ago.
Never had any trouble and still going strong.

Wow old thread! I mounted mine up in the corner on the passenger's side where the firewall meets the passenger's side inner fender.

Not an A body but the right side of the cowl was a good spot on my 64 Polara. The PO mounted it there so I kept it there when I swapped it out for a good one.

I used nutserts for a solid install and a good ground.

It should be mounted in as cool a place as possible & way from moisture. I have my ign [ coil & box ] mounted under the dash. I use coaxial microphone cable for the p/up wires, with the earth braid earthed. Probably overkill.

Because of the very small current generated by the p/up, the wires can be quite long. I believe MSD make an extension to suit their boxes. One install I did has the ign mounted under the bat tray, rear mounted dist. Make sure the p/up wires are twisted, kept as close to a ground plane as possible &* kept away from the coil neg wire.

As long as the wires are properly twisted, shielded, I think you can mount it wherever you want. Mine is under the back seat.

I don't lean over good anymore, so I put everything where I can reach it incase of failure, he'll, I even put my proportion valve on the drivers side fender during all the up dates I did at 66 years old on my 66 Plymouth Valiant
You must understand that I am a red neck hillbilly in northeast Arkansas on the hill in the sticks where I belong
