Long story short. I drove my 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee to Kansas City on Sunday to do some work at my daughter's house (about 70 miles). As I was leaving, there was a bad clanking noise from under the hood. Turns out the PS pump locked up. There was PS fluid all over. I guess the high-pressure hose failed. So, I called for roadside assistance, and a tow truck came pretty quickly. I told them to take it to the nearest Jeep Dealership. If it broke down in Topeka, I would fix it. I offered to follow him to the dealership and fill out one of those 'Night Drop Off' envelopes, but the driver told me he does this all the time, don't worry. So I call the dealership ALL DAY Monday and cannot talk to anyone in Service. Finally, at 10:00 this morning (Tuesday), I talk to a service writer. He promised to check into it and call me right back. At 5:00. I call back, and they say the car isn't there. I call the tow place, and a lady said she would look into it and call right back. Of course, she didn't. I called back and there had been a shift change. So now I have to wait until tomorrow morning. I called my insurance company, and they said that, under the circumstances, they will tow it to my house. IF WE FIND IT!
If both parties claim ignorance, I guess it's time to report a stolen car.
GOOD GRIEF!

Were you on a local road or a interstate? Interstates have dedicated towing services, at least were I live they do. Who did you call for roadside assistance? Im betting the car is at a dealership, maybe not the one you thought

I'm willing to bet it's sitting at the dealership you had it towed to.
I'd go there and look if I were you.
When I worked at a dealer, we had tow trucks bringing cars 6 or 7 times a day, plus after hours.
Some of the drivers would fill out the night drop slips, some would throw the keys in the seat and leave.
Since we had the service dept, a body shop, and auction cars coming all the time, we never paid attention unless the driver came in or filled out the night drop.
Can't tell you how many times we had to go look for a car after the owners would call for an update. Often days after the car was dropped off.
I've also noted several times, if you want to make a car disappear, park it in dealers service lot. We went out and marked all of the cars on the lot once, after 2 months, we still had 5 cars that we couldn't account for.
2 turned out to be voluntary surrenders (repo's the owners just dropped off and said nothing, that happened a lot, but usually they park the cars in the sales lot) , 2 had been in for service, but the repair was more than the owners could afford so they abandoned the cars, and one was just an abandoned car.

I am driving to KC today to look on their lot. I have a LOT of other things to be doing! Like @gunbunny said, it is probably there. I truly live my life by the golden rule, and I am always nice until it is time to not be nice. If I drive 75 miles and the car is right there on the lot, I am going to tell them exactly what I think of their business, and I'll find a way to post a review. I have an amazingly good relationship with the local Jeep dealership, John Hoffer. I consider the Service Manager, his assistant and the General Manager to be friends. The people at the dealership in Kansas City could not even be bothered to look and see if my car was there. This would NEVER happen at Hoffer.

How do you say F*ck you in tow truck driver talk???

"Don't worry/trust me"....
Over the years, I have had several occasions where I called my insurance company for a tow, and I never had a problem. I guess I better start assuming, going forward, that people I do not know are not going to do their job properly and check up on everything. If I had followed the guy to the dealership, this would not have happened.

Ahh, k thanks Bruce, makes sense. Only "roadside " assistance I was aware of was with new vehicles, or CAA. We just got CAA for me and Lori. $240 for 2 people for a year. Not bad.
If you have roadside assistance included in your policy, the insurance company sends their preferred service.

I would contact the tow company, it's more than likely sitting locked up in their gated fortress. I am sure it is racking up a pretty healthy storage fee by now....

Didn't think to. I have had tows set up by my insurance company before without a problem.

They should know the provider they used.

Then is WAS, in fact, stolen.

YAY. @gunbunny was right. The car was at the dealer. Right after I posted that I was going to drive to KC and look on the lot, I decided to try calling the dealership ONE MORE TIME! A real person answered. I briefly described my situation and politely demanded to talk to someone in service NOW. She apologized profusely, put me on a brief hold, and I talked to a nice guy named Jeffrey. He told me that they DID have my car, but they had a bad phone number and could not get ahold of me. I told him I did not know how they got a bad phone number, but that did NOT forgive two whole days of me trying to contact someone in Service with NOBODY answering the myriad of voicemails I left. I told him that after two whole days of blowing me off and NOT answering any of my calls, I did not want them to work on it. He actually agreed with me. My insurance company, USAA, agreed to pay to tow my car for a second time all the way to my local Jeep dealer (about 80 miles). When my friends at John Hoffer Chrysler Jeep got the car, within an hour they had diagnosed the problem and called me with the estimate. THAT is how things are done. I am going to go on Google and leave a VERY appropriate review. And BTW, while I was talking to the dealership, the tow company called and left a message saying that it absolutely WAS dropped off at Gladstone Dodge in Kansas City.

Glad you found out before driving all the way there!

Clear case of "customer no service".

Shame on that service department. I'm sure it's not the only time their "indifference" shines through. USAA is awesome for towing it to you...

I don't know their situation.
If the place is a multi point dealership or just a huge one, I can see how a tow in could lost in the shuffle.
I'm not making excuses, I just understand how it can happen. That's why I told you to reach out there 1st.
If we're being truthful with ourselves, the tow truck driver caused a lot of this.
He either didn't take your info down correctly or didn't give them the right info. Could be a case of a little of both.
We had a tow driver that would drop off cars and never fill out paperwork. After a few months it dawned on us he couldn't read. Super nice guy, but if his wife wasn't with him, you got nothing.
Super glad your Jeep was found, I had a pretty good idea the moment I read your post of what happened.

No kidding. But isn't that the trend.

Well, buddy, you did hit the nail on the head. It actually made me feel better, and I thank you for that. I have no problem with honest mistakes being made. I made one myself once. What I do have a problem with is calling a company and getting an answering machine to press #1, #2, etc. and then being passed off to voice mail, and then NOT being called back. I don't care how busy they were, two full days of calling from 8:00 to 5:00 and not ONE voice mail was answered. It is a big dealership, but that is no way to run a business. I am glad my friends at John Hoffer Chrysler Jeep have it now. It will be done tomorrow.
