My search for a shorty D100 is over

what? not gonna have a sip of the forbidden strawberry fanta? it's refreshing!
Definitely not on purpose. I did get a drip in my eye yesterday when I thought the cooler line was finished dripping and was wrong. Got me right in corner of my left eye. That was a weird feeling.

Dropped the hurt 46re off this morning with my trans builder. He said he’ll have it apart today and have some answers for me tomorrow.

Ok quick update for y’all. Took a bit longer than I (we) thought to get the trans back but ultimately the converter, or more specifically the lock up clutch in the converter was the problem. Had to have another custom converter made. Same specs as the old one, lock up, tight 2800 stall. The clutch “turned to dust”, his words not mine, and went through the whole trans. So a complete rebuild of all the soft parts, a gasket and seal kit, both solenoids, and a new converter. The trans is on my garage floor waiting reinstall and that’ll likely happen this weekend.

Thats why the shop truck is staying with a slant and 3 spd......so I don't have to walk
My slant powered truck still has its original 727 in it, the slant is staying but since my 727 has to come out to fix a leak, (think it might be the low reverse band O rings) I'll split the difference with ya and put this A 500 I have back in.... I do have the hard to find 1960s /6 to small block trans adapter on hand ... Came from a 64 D100.

Was that an age thing that caused the lockup clutch to grenade?

That'll be a nice swap!

Wasn't it custom build you never used ?
Maybe it didn't have enough pressure and smoked
What do you use to know when to lock up

Yea I take responsibility for it for the most part, I had the trans and the converter built in 2014 for another project and never used it, it’s just been sitting. For a while it was bolted to an engine on my run stand and that engine ran more than a handful of times but that’s it. The trans never went in to a vehicle. It was full of fluid but sat for probably 7 years without being run before I put it in the D100. @nutz I use an electronic trans controller and I can set the lock up speed (same with overdrive) and what gear it locks up in the programming. There is also a manual override switch to lock the converter at any time in any gear but first.

I'd come help put the trans in if you bring your wiring help here for the Charger. Glad you got it fixed and ready to go. Your truck kicks ***

So the clutch dried out ? Then smoked
Or had it coming on to soon
That the problem with the newer 6/8/10 speed gm and Ford they use the lock up too much smoke the tc clutch witch dumps clutch into the trans and clogs the filter
Thinking would start with only locking in at 3/4 over about 500 /1000 rpm over stall
2800 stall is what mph in high gear

If you were closer I’d be there in a heartbeat. Maybe I could fly out for a weekend? Sunday I’ll be in El Mirage watching some good ole go fast stuff.

That’s how I understand what happened. The default programming is to set clutch lock up only in overdrive and only after 55mph and less than 1/2 throttle. So it’s very conservative to start tuning. I definitely don’t think the tuning is what killed the clutch, I think it just dried out.

Although you are more than welcome, I wouldn't ask that. Thanks though Mike

You ever have days when you want to throw every tool you own and give up working on stuff? I had one of those days on Saturday. I was so pissed I had to close up shop and get out of town for a day. I’ve cooled off now so I’m telling you guys my story two days after the fact.
Saturday morning got up nice and early and my buddy Troy showed up with coffee and Corn Pops (weird) in hand to help me put the heaviest automotive transmission in the history of ever back in my truck. We stood the trans up on the output shaft and dropped the new converter on the splines. Made a small tool to keep it there and slid the trans under the truck. Lifted it up in place and got to work bolting everything back on. Bellhousing, driveshaft, shift linkage, cooler lines, flexplate, all went well. Almost too well in fact. We were done in a couple hours. Back on the wheels we dump about 8 quarts of atf in it and hit the key. Engine fired instantly like it was mad at me for letting it sit for two weeks. Topped off the trans with 2 more quarts and drove it down the street. My truck was back. It was a good feeling, until it wasn’t. Back in the driveway, one more check of the fluid level and off we went for a longer test drive. Made it a mile and half and the trans stopped working all together. Zero, nada, nothing. 4 fuckin neutrals again. Towed it home pissed off, locked the garage and left. Happy Saturday

Yeah, that’s exactly what I did. I closed up shop and I went up to El Mirage yesterday and watched a couple friends try and go fast. It was nice to be out and not work on any of my junk.

Sorry... Drop the pan and valve body hit the ports with an air gun test a see if everything is working/ engaging. It worked so you know the clutches drive line parts are working. sound like its either valve body or controller.

Last time you figured it was the lock up clutch. Did you ever even get into lockup this time?

I am a self proclaimed NON transmission guy. The only thing I pay someone else to do on my cars is the trans. Figures that’s what I’m having problems with. I just got this trans back from “my guy” as well as a brand new converter and they cost me a bunch. I should not be dealing with trans issues. The ball is in his court at this point. I called him this morning and had a chat, after I cooled off of course, (if I called Saturday it wouldn’t have gone well) and he gave me a couple things to check. After those minor things it’s going back to him and he can deal with it.

No sir. I purposely tuned the lock up and overdrive to stay off, both were off until 55mph and we never got above 35mph. I pulled the cooler lines off when I got home and fired it up, both were bone dry. I believe this to be a front pump problem or a plugged filter, don’t see how that’s possible with a brand new trans and fresh fluid though.

That sucks man. I know the feeling. Hang in there, stay cool about it. Hopefully you get it back together soon.
