So the wholesale value of my 2021 longhorn ram pretty much with most of the options under 6 thousand miles is just under 40 grand. Im being told the dealer might offer 37 to39 grand
All fine and well as its really still like brand new, the truck im looking at shows MSRP of around 44 grand but right below that is something called a "express" price, meaning I guess some sort of supposedly gimmick deal and that price is almost 4 thousand over MSRP
Im thinking this is this dealer markup I hear about
Since I already inquired on line, the text messages are starting to pour in, I expect phone calls today
Ive already bought two new vehicles in the last two years from theses dealerships all owned by the same person.
I was thinking of telling them id take 39 on a trade and pay MSRP plus tax and tags.
I dislike the new car buying experience although the last two cars I bought from this dealer went well enough.
Thoughts and experiences?

I think that's more than fair. The dealership is probably getting a rebate on MSRP.

I would rather go to the dentist than buy a car at a dealership. They think that 30 year old sales techniques still work, but don't understand buyers are much more knowledgeable now than then.

Since your truck is like new and the truck you want is brand new, it’s smart to trade in. The reason for that, the taxes they’ll give you on your trade-in almost a wash on the new truck tax will be.

Exactly what I was told by a extended family member who sells new cars
Im doubtful I can make the deal as I was already told the dealer is marking up price of the vehicle
Why sell a one year old truck with 6k miles on it?
Because I want something smaller. When I bought my wife her new 2020 we kept her 05 as the trade in valve was nothing. That car ran like brand new and had 76 thousand miles on it...So it became my daily driver, now its going to a relative

I'm not following? The value is almost the same between new and trade in, so it makes sense that the tax $$ would be equivalent, but I really dont understand the value of trading in a basically new truck for another new one?
My Ram is a 2017 with warranty still left(and payments lol) but I dont see the "benefit" of trading in/up?

I bought my 2021 brand new, paid cash....Im thinking of getting a smaller truck. However I won't pay more than MSRP. So while my 21 is low milage like new and worth more now, id like to take advantage of that.
Keeping my out of pocket expenses lower
If I can do the deal, great. If not I wait until more vehicles are available

If you hate going to the Dentist wait until you have to visit the urologist.....Funny you wrote that as the dealership just called me.. So yes the price is over 4 thousand MSRP.
Market value, salesman mentioned. He tried to tell me how much more my trade in is worth more than I paid. Justify jacking up price of new vehicle. I told him I dont care how they figure it as I have X amount to spend....That was a mistake to mention I thought afterwards .
Either way I can relate to how you feel about dealing with a new vehicle sale versus a dentist appointment.
The catheter I just had shoved up my ***** last week for some test was a lot less annoying than dealing with buying a new car for sure.

Makes complete sense if you're downsizing.
Side note but kinda related...I look at housing/mortgages in todays market...
People have a house with $300k in equity....so they sell it and buy another house that eats up 80-90% of that $300k equity. Yes it may be a nicer house, BUT you now have an overinflated mtg(for the most part). I would rather have that equity in a LOC vs a mortgage. I see vehicle prices same way?

I bought this Tradesman EcoDiesel for 21k believe it or not. This was back in Jan 2020. I decided that since I drive so short of a distance to work that a diesel was not a good choice. By the time I finally decided to sell it Covid was in full swing. So, right after the lockdowns (looking back that was extremely tyrannical) I put it up for sale. Withing 2 days I had sold it for 24k. If I had the foresight I would have kept it another year and could have sold it for 30K.

I really miss it though. I might try to go buy a Classic before they stop making them. I think the new gen Ram looks like a + size Tacoma.

We got lucky...my daughter was looking for a new SUV. We happened to go to the Honda dealership and because of the new car shortages they just happened to get in a new CRV the night before. It had just been prepped and rolled onto the showroom floor that morning. We had gotten there early and my daughter fell in love with the CRV. They didn't have any new CRVs on the lot because of the shortages. We asked if they could get the CRV out of the showroom floor to take a drive and they said of course. As we watched them take the car out of the showroom many other people started to show up and huddle around the car, it was the only CRV on the lot. IT WAS FREAKY!! Supply and demand is a *****!! We drove the car and checked it out, my daughter loved it so she bought the car. The hoard of other potential buyers weren't very happy after waiting for over an hour just to see if we would buy the car. The really great thing about the newer cars (like my wife's 2022 Toyota Sienna SUV) is that they get over 40 MPG. That kind of mileage really helped on our last 3,000 mile vacation!!

I did down size from a 4 door dodge to a single cap/shortbed , it get about 9 miles to the gallon more /average , even better on the hi way.
You guys may not be old enough to remember, but back when I was young , NO ONE , GAVE MSRP , THAT WAS RIDICULOUS AND STILL IS ,ITS WHAT THE FACTORY SUGGESTS FOR A DEALER TO MAKE A KILLING AND STAY IN BUSINESS TO SELL THEIR CARS , NO ON GAVE MSRP BACK THEN .
They make a killing even at msrp !! thousands and thousands !! Anything over that is even bigger rape !!

The salesman I bought my 67 GTS from new later owned his own dealership and told my Daddy that he could sell every car on the lot for what he would show you as his cost and still stay in business. He said the factory rebate that they gave him on volume was enough since he had lower overhead. Sure miss him because he was our go to anytime we needed a new vehicle, Joe

On the rare occasion that I have purchased a vehicle from a dealer, I have always kept in the forefront of my mind that I am the one in control, not the salesperson. I can walk away any time, and have, when I don't like the terms or the way I'm being treated. If you maintain the mindset that they need your purchase $$ more than you need their product, since there are always other dealers around with the same or almost the same product available, the choice is always yours to go elsewhere. I have never, and will never, pay full asking price for a vehicle, or a home, and as for paying over list because of a "bidding war", HELL NO! There is nothing I need that badly that I'm willing to pay more than what I feel it's worth, I will simply go without it, especially a vehicle. I can keep one of my older cars going or just pick up another used one for a minimal investment of time and money. I don't typically buy brand new, only twice in my life, because I can't stomach the depreciation of a new car or truck, I generally buy older vehicles from private sellers, and pay cash.

I was trying to buy a new 1972 Cutlass Supreme and we got close. Salesman asked me if I was going to let $35.00 keep me from buying a car and I said "Are you going to let it knock you out of selling a car, I wasn't walking when I came in here and I won't be walking when I leave". I walked out and got in my GTS and burnt them down pretty good. By the way I wasn't trying to trade just buy. Joe

Had similar tactics used on me, that's where I walk away, sometimes without saying anything, just get up and leave.
Full disclosure, I was in the business of selling cars during the recession in the 80s, tough times to make a living.

All good comments and I agree
I would like to do this deal but I dont need to and I can wait if thats what it comes down to.
I usually keep my cars long. The 05, my wife used it for 15 years and even than there was nothing wrong other than needing paint
We were closing in on 70, she wanted a new car and she deserves anything she wants, so I bought her a mid sized SUV
Same situation with me now, but if the dealer gets stupid im more than happy to wait as my personal opinion is sooner than later the cars will come in volumes and the dealers will be looking to make deals
Im going soon to dealer, will let you all know what goes down and thanks again

Where we bought our 2019 Colorado z71, the dealership offered me 30k without having to buy a new truck, it had 32k on it then.

44k, you must be looking at a base model 2 wheel drive regular cab. Our 2019 Colorado z71 stickered for 36k

@Steve welder The dealer most likely already has a buyer for the truck you are looking to trade and will make an *** kicking killing on it when they sell it. Decide what the difference that you are willing to pay for an out the door deal on the new truck you want. $3K, 4K, etc. and stick to it.
There aren't many new trucks that are mid sized except a Ranger or Colorado. Are you looking at one of those? Good luck with whatever you choose.

Ha !!!! I just posted about market conditions effecting truck prices and was immediately deleted because it was deamed political . How it could possibly be viewed as political is beyond me ! I dont even know how the mod had time to read it ! Lol

That's stupid, after all this is the general discussion section, as long as no one is being treated it shouldn't matter.

It had absolutely no mention of anything political . There must be keywords that trigger post deletes ... I mentioned the possibilty of the "Russia fiasco" effecting shipping . Thats all I can imagine .

We're supposed to have freedom of speech, but I wonder sometimes. I thought that the general discussion section included politics too? If we can't discuss different topics amount us why have it? They can't use foul language as a excuse either as I've seen that quite often and the post was not deleted. As I said earlier as long as nobody is treated it shouldn't matter one way or the other. Unless it has to do with who's in the click and who isn't.
