.. preventing head bolt leakage ??? ..

Yup. I've never seen that and I stand corrected (and I'd question the "voice of authority"...lol). I guess need to get more hands on with some 318s or 273s. I think the last one I built was before I even went to tech school.

That beign said, the OP's question... I'd still not put sealer on the bolts. If there's a lot of coolant getting into the oil, or vice versa, the gasket's blown or leaking.

Yea Moper I kinda set you up on that one. But i have read many of your posts and thought you were a professional mechanic. Myself I,m just a plumber who has always had to twist his own wrenches. I know now to keep my mouth shut as would hate to give advice that could be potentially catastrophic to someones project.

Lol... USED to be professional mechanic. Was at one time ASE master tech w/engine performance cert. But that was when you could still get 360s rather than 5.9L....lol. Still, I've never ever seen that. Maybe it's later years? The last 318 I played with was a '74, before that nothing later than that. So maybe it's later ones? Who knows. I keep saying never say never...lol. oops. live nad learn.

Man that picture is Photoshoped dude!!

You can look at it and tell........ the light is blue in the water jacket hole but the bolt hole and the small round water jacket hole the light is WHITE! Also notice the edges of the bolt hole where the white isn't perfectly round. Come on man!!!!

No engine expert, but isn't the small round hole oil supply to the rockers? If a water passage, it would clog easy and isn't that what the two big irregular ports are for? If so, supports mullinax95's "photo-shopped" idea.

Has anyone ever seen rusted head bolts, like water pump bolts? They would be rusty for sure if they sat in water.

Old thread, I know.

I just checked my 1965 273 prior to installing the heads. None of the bolt holes are open to the water jacket. I shined a light down each one. I can see the bottom of each hole and no light shines into the water jacket.

I have read many great posts by 67Dart273 so I know he really knows his stuff. Chrysler must have made them both ways.

Wonder if somewhere along the line the head bolt got bottomed out and broke through. Every Mopar engine I have seen has had blind head bolt holes.

This can happen when cleaning all the threads with a bottom tap. Ask me how I know!

I used RTV Black on the bottom of those two studs on assembly. They have never leaked. Engine is in my Scamp in the avatar.

What year is the block? Mopar blocks started life with "blind" holes, 60's-into late 70's, then as a weight savings measure they took the iron out and made them thru holes into water. That would explane why some are and some aren't.

Just checked a couple of blocks (318's) that I have laying around; one is a 74 casting with blind head bolt holes, the other is a 79 casting and dependent on location (front or rear of block) some holes blind, some not. I know my 360 block (81 casting) has blind holes.

The holes that are not blind, I use liquid teflon to seal the threads.
