UPDATED: Coyotes' Raffi Torres suspended indefinitely for hit on Blackhawks' Marian Hossa
There's finishing a hit and then there's a blatantly late hit. Which one is this? According to Phoenix Coyotes forward Raffi Torres, it's the former. According to just about anyone else with a pair of eyes, it's the latter. (UPDATE)
Torres has been suspended indefinitely by the NHL, pending an in-person hearing on Friday, for a brutal hit on Chicago's Marian Hossa -- video below -- during Game 3 of the Coyotes/Blackhawks series on Tuesday night.
After Phoenix went on to win 2-1 on OT, Torres
told the Associated Press, "I felt like it was a hockey play. I was just trying to finish my hit out there." Meanwhile, Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville had a different opinion. "I saw exactly what happened. It was right in front of me all four (officials) missed it. The refereeing tonight was a disgrace."
Now, the other night on Coach's Corner, Don Cherry blamed the media for stoking all this headshot and hockey violence hysteria. He said it's ALWAYS been like this so everyone just calm down and shut up. Well Don, they used to play with wood sticks, no helmets and beer guts, too, and that changed. And by the way, it's not just the media.
Not long after the hit, future Hall of Famer
Mike Modano tweeted, "Really selling the game. No wonder our TV deals suck ***!"
Player agent Allan Walsh, whose clients include Marc-Andre Fleury, Martin Havlat and Patrik Elias, hit Twitter with this: "This has spiraled from out of control to total chaos. Do we really need a player to die on the ice for this insanity to stop?"
Walsh also posted [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0KC91Wuz2k&feature=youtube_gdata_player"]this video[/ame] of a Torres (then an Oiler) hit on Milan Michalek from back in 2006. But you don't have to go that far back. Remember [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JeZDE9H3_vU"]that hit on Chicago star Brent Seabrook[/ame] in last year's playoffs?
Whatever the apologists and Cherry lackeys think, the best hockey is hard, fast and clean. Everyone always talks about the Olympics, but look no further than the LA Kings/Vancouver Canucks series or the Sens/Rangers series to find it.
Torres, who didn't even get a minor penalty on the Hossa hit, will now miss at least Game 4 on Thursday in Chitown. The real question remains, will his ultimate punishment send a significant message or will it continue the $2,500 fine variety of neutered justice the NHL has favoured lately?
