Stock internal 318 redline??

My guess (note:Guess) is that the bottom end is probably safe to 6000/6200. Whether there is ANY point going there, or even trying to get there, is determined by head flow and camshaft/valvetrain.
Stock cam and springs? I see no benefit past 5200. Maybe less.
shifting a stock 340@5200 with 3.23s and 727 gets you a 14.9 quarter
5800 in 1st 5600 in 2nd gets 14.3@97 mph and change
100s of passes
the motor reved to 6k cleanly the listed shift points speak for themselves
6500 7000 == you need sleeves
3.55s slighty less
3.91s slighty less then 3.55s
3.23s you need to rev it

Hold first geared till it makes a noise you're not familiar with and then from then on shift it just before it makes that noise....
 
My post says, just under 5000 it makes the most, that's why I shift at 5000

then try 100 more or 100 less to find the best shift point
its not 5k in 318 with a 340 cam specs atleast 5500
anybody who puts a cam in 318 without upgrading the springs is a fool
 
The easiest way is divide 24,000-30,000 by stroke = max rpm, depends on parts and build quality,
24,000 is a decent built short block, 30,000+ is like nascar, 24,000 divided by 3.31 = 7250 rpm.
Being stock might want to shave off some rpms.

Max pistons speed x 6 / stroke = max rpm
stock yeah like 1500 rpm under7250 :)

I’d say the OP doesn’t have much reason to spin more than 5750 rpm but even at super weak stock, piston speed of 3500 so 21,000/3.31=max 6350 rpm.
 
This thread inspired me. I just took a bone stock 318. 1980 flavor. Factory bore. Stock heads, stock springs. Aluminum assault racing mid rise intake and a highes 340 whiplash cam. All stuff i had around. Seemed like a fun morning project. Who's voting piston to valve contact or real early valve float

Just to be clear... my 318 is actually a 390 stroker.

Josh, Josh, at least shim the valve springs 30 to 60 thousands.

Kinda depends on how well the power carries past the power peak. Solid cam with decent carry past peak, sure, 500 rpm past peak, then experiment to see what it likes.
Hydraulic cam with tired stock springs? And the power falling off a cliff? 200 past peak might be too much.
Bottom line? Experiment!
 
A good thing about smaller engines they tend not to fall off as quick after peak hp probably cause it's easier to fill there cylinders cause displacement size and heads available.

Here's similar engine to the OP stock 318 low cr long block xe262h cam 4bbl headers peaks at 5000 rpm with 282hp and makes over 270hp from 4500-5500 rpm, shift 1-2 from 5000 rpm drops to 2950 rpm and a shift 1-2 from 5500 rpm drops to 3250 rpm, engine makes 192 hp at 3000 rpm and 227 hp at 3500 rpm.

Seems just fine. Not the carb I'm running on it. You'll hear the stumble but it was good enough for the break in period.
 
Back in the seventies I had a 340 six pack 4 speed manual trans with forged pistons 292/510 purple shaft cam and heads were just home clean up of the ports and valve job at home by my father. That thing was a rev monster! After running it in I took it for a run down the road and it pulled past 6500 on the tacho before I changed in every gear. I would rev it well over 7 grand when showing off but max power was at about 6500.Yes it had Hydraulic lifters and std rocker arms.The hdro lifters were not stock but out of a drag car of the time 383 two barrel that ran low tens. Looking at them you could see where the oil hole had been welded up and moved but I did not know if the internals had been modified but you could easily get to mid seven thousand revs. No one could believe how that thing could rev with hydraulic lifters.
I can I've done it, more than once! With SEVERAL MOPARS!
