I sent an email to a local gear shop to see if they had any used 27 spline limited slip carriers. I got an reply this morning that they have several good trac lok's and 1 good auburn. They want 125$ for the trac lok, 200$ for the auburn.

Is the auburn worth the extra money?

The trac locks kinda suck for a real high performance application. the dana power lock is a much better unit. The auburn is sorta a disposable unit. they can be refurbished, although they generally won't last too terribly long after that.

how high performance are we talking? I'm building a budget street/strip car with a goal of mid-low 12s

I've never run and Auburn but from what i've heard they suck, the trac-loc is a very good unit,i ran one behind my 416 in the duster with a lot of track time on it with no issues,my friend is now running it behind his dart and loves it..

Careful here. the trac lock is a very low performance factory style unit. They are very weak. A lot of people get the trac lock and Power Lock mixed up. they are two completely different animals.

ok, then that's what i'll go with. I was already leaning that way since they're rebuildable and one of my DD's has a similar clutch-type LSD and works fairly well.

The Auburn unit would work ok. If you wanted something bulletproof, I'd go with the Power lock.

No confussion here it was a trac-loc bought new from Randy's and took one hell of a beating with wheels up launches still going stronge in another vehicle..i prefer spools and run one in my street/strip duster with zero issues..

Can you guys also explain a dana detroit locker for me as well? How is one of those for a street car with 500hp/tq...i have one in my dana 60....cant drive the car yet though...

good to know, i ended up buying the trac-loc and if i ever hit a point where it won't cut it, then i'll buy something tougher. But from the sound of things, it seems like when i hit that point i'll be in the upper limits of the 8.25's strength anyways.

I,m running a new Auburn in my 66 Dart with no issues, but switching to a spool this week. The Auburn will go in my 340 4 speed car.:-D

A Detroit Locker is an Eaton brand not Dana. I have never used one but heard good things, supposed to automatically unlock when you let off the gas while turning a corner.

A detroit Locker is a gear to gear locking diff. It doesnt slip. It "clunks" when you corner. If you've ever heard a Boss 429 or Boss 302 car turn sharp in a parking lot you've heard them. It's usually very noisey, but you'll never break it. If you want a top of the line limited slip for the street I'd only recommend the Detroit Tru Trac. The Auburns or any other cone-style diff is a waste of cash. They wear fairly quickly, and as they wear they produce metal particles that also ruin the gears. Get a clutch type, or Tru Trac.

TrueTrac's are a work of art but it comes at a price. I've seen Dana 60 units start at around $500 if you want 4.56 or higher and $700 for 4.10 and lower

I have the Auburn in my 73 Dart Sport 340,4 speed now,I don,t really drive the car that much, but layed down about 100ft of rubber yesterday with no issues.I feel if it last me 10 yrs(about 500-1000 miles per year)alls good.:clock:
