"It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather we should thank God that such men lived."
- General George S. Patton, Jr

I live about 35 miles from the City (New York). I was getting ready to head into the City because I had a class at New York University that afternoon. I was watching the morning news and talking to a friend on the phone. It was not yet clear as to what was happening. Just then, I watched the second plane hit live on TV. I just said "Holy Shi*, that was done on purpose! The world just changed as we know it". It took a while to even realize how serious it was. I was still thinking that I was actually going to make that class.

Everyone here in North Jersey knows of someone who died or at least someone who knows someone. People were walking around lower Manhattan for weeks looking for, and expecting to find those who were lost.

Absolutely awesome quote. I watched "Patton" for about the 20th time just about a month ago. It makes me think of those that lost thier lives on Flight 93.

I was on the phone with my brother, his son had just been born as I watched the planes hit the World Trade Center. God bless all the brave Americans that lost their lives that day & our brave military that continues to fight for our freedom!

I was running a crane in n/w wa state conoco refinery, as soon as the first plane hit they
Shut the refinery down I got to my motor home just in time to see the second one hit,
Devastated to say the least. As a vet I personally don't think we retaliated in a swift harsh
Maner IMO

I was in second grade when it happened. I dont really remember a lot from it happening, but I do remember watching the TV during class to see what had happened.

I had the TV on that morning, I work nights, so saw it all as it happened.

In 2000, while visiting my cousin and another friend in New York, we picked up my friend's sister from the World Trade Center where she worked. I called my friend when I saw the attack and learned that her sister took off that day as there was an election and she had voluteered at the polling place. She retired soon thereafter.

Like many of you I remember thinking this was the most violent and hateful attack in my lifetime, and that life would not be the same. I am thankful that my loved ones who already had passed do not live in the world we live in today.

I too wish I could go back to a kinder and less treacherous time.

I was just getting off shift at the fire station I worked at. One of the guys coming on said a plane had hit one of the towers. We turned on the tv and watched it unfold. There wasn't much sitting around at first because we sensed what was happening. I helped plan for our potential disaster or deployment into Chicago if needed and made phone calls and readied gear. After that was done I went home and looked east towards Ohare airport and watched the planes circle and land until they were all gone from the air. I am still angry and sad about that day and think of the men and women who died almost every day.

i was in the 6th grade walking into my early morning math class with my teacher playing the radio pretty much through out the whole day, that was a crazy week not a sound through out the whole school. i was kind of confused on what was going on til i got home and actually seen the news coverage i was on the opposite side of the country but felt the pain of all those in New York that terrible day

I was on the Santa Ana Fwy. driving in to work. I'd been listening to a CD but changed to a music station part way in. They were talking about a plane hitting the first tower. I immediately thought they must have really bad weather in NYC and a small plane had hit the tower by accident - similar to how a B-25 medium bomber had hit the Empire State Building shortly after the end of WW2 (yeah, I'm a history buff). Just a couple minutes later they announced the 2nd tower had been hit as well and I immediately knew it was no accident.
I got to work and that was about all we talked about all day. No TV at work so we all kept trying to get news updates via radio or internet.
Didn't see the coverage until after work. Couldn't believe it.
Seeing the repeats of the coverage for the 10th anniversary immediately brings it all back.
I was so proud of the way Americans all immediately abandoned together and the all the patriotism that was shown. I live on a 7-house cul-de-sac and 3 of us fly Old Glory every day unless there's bad weather.
I also remember how greatful I was that Bush was in office rather than Gore. We needed a cowboy in office then. This clown that's in the White House now would probably have apologized to the world for whatever we must have done to cause others to attack us. He's gotta go next November.

I was asleep on my couch (I had just got home from work around 6am and just crashed there) .. my mother called and asked if I was ok.. said that a plane crashed somewhere in Westmoreland County (which was wrong.. it was actually not in Westmoreland County.. flight 93 went down in Sommerset County.. but at that time of the morning news was sketchy).. I was rubbing my eyes trying to figure out what she was talking about and glanced at the tv, which had ESPN's sportcenter on when I went to sleep.. I was seeing the mayor of NY on and could see the towers on fire, and read at the bottom of the screen that America was under attack.. nothing was the same after that.. I spent the rest of the day glued to the tv.. in shock and horror..

I was sitting in History class. Had just got into the 8th grade.

The messages on facebook and the media about "never forgetting 911" are starting to annoy me. How could any American forget what happened on that dark day. I wasn't going to post to this thread until I spent the last 2 hours reading the forum thread that was posted by ab7fh. It brought back my experience of that day, however insignificant it was.

On 09 11 2001 I had planned to go to an auto auction to buy my first pickup truck. My daily driver was my 70 dart and it was having transmission problems as well as overheating. My cousin had a friend who had a car lot and could take us to the dealer auction. I was 23 and lived with my future wife in a 1 bedroom duplex. I had been a conductor for BNSF Railroad for 3 years. I took a trip off the evening of September 10th so I could go pick out my new truck. On the morning of September 11 my future wife woke me up, she was getting ready for work and must have had the TV on. She asked me out of a dead sleep, "Is the world Trade Center where the stock market is?" and "I think a helicopter hit the Pentagon." I went out into the living room to watch the TV, just in time to see the second plane hit. Americans lives changed forever that day. I grew up beliving America was invencable, my daughter will never feel that. With the turn the economy took after the attacks and the dot com burst my wife who was 20 on Sept 11 has never fully utilized her Masters Degree that she earned just a year after the attacks.

I am now a Locomotive Engineer and have been asked to blow my train horn at 10 am Pacific to honor victims of 911, I will do so with honor for all those who lost their lives on that dreadfull day, and all of those affected by the worst attack on American soil in my lifetime.

In Austin, working at a MFG facility near the SouthEast edge of town. I was auditing a training class and we went on break. We were watching the coverage and the anchor was guessing that a light aircraft had hit the tower. Based on the damage I told my coworkers it had to be a large plane and it was terrorism - they looked at me really funny- then the second plane hit. A few hours later my dad called, he was on a business trip and his plane had left El Paso, TX for Alabama shortly after the attack. They were over Lousiana when they were told to turn back and land at Houston Intercontinental. The passengers were not informed what was happening until they were on the ground. By the time they landed all the local hotels were booked and all the rental cars were taken. He called to see if I could come get him that evening. I left work immediately and made it to Houston in about 1/2 the time it should have taken... my dad had caught a hotel shuttle and had just arrived at the hotel when I arrived. My dad spent the next couple days in Austin, finally found a rental car and drove back to El Paso.

In 1983 the marine corp Barracks in Lebanon were targeted. I was in High School ROTC and our Captain was convinced we were going to be full tilt in the middle east in short order. He was a veteran of WWII and Korea. In 1986 I enlisted in the Army Reserves fully expecting to end up over there, we actually talked about it in basic training and in my advanced training. Then, when the wall came down our reserve unit began shrinking and eventually evaporated as the Army and reserve corp shrank and the army restructured. Today there are about 2/3 the number of active duty troops as there were in 1990. I don't know how much the reserves shrank in that time. Just before Desert Storm I moved into the IRR (Individual Ready Reserve). During Desert Storm I was notified that due to shortages in my field it was likely I would be activated, most likely to backfill in Germany. Nothing came of that. I fully expected the conflict in Iraq to keep going after they liberated Kuwait, I was quite suprised they stopped. From the moment our forces were in Saudi Arabia, whether we acknowleged it or not, there were people who were at war with the US. I was suprised it took as long as it did for them to bring the fight to our soil and was in no way suprised when it happened. Now ten years has passed. What will the next ten years look like? The world in the middle east is changing rapidly. Will it be friendlier, I doubt it - look what is happening in Israel.

I just wanted to say that I have read each and every story and all I can say WOW......... GOD BLESS AMERICA ...................

let's keep the stories going

Ten years ago today, I worked grave yards at Wal-Mart and was on my way home listening to K-bear when they said that some idiot had flown their plane into the twin towers. America had no idea what had just started. I got home and turned on the television and watched the rest unfold. I can vividly remember sitting there watching the news cast as the second plane flew in. In that moment, the world changed. As I watched for the rest of the day, I can remember the emotions that I felt. The helplessness for all the people in New York and around the country, and even the world. It seemed to me that we were stuck in a bad movie, it didn't seem real. I remember going to work that night and every person had a look of shock. No one really said anything. The panic had already started and lots of things were gone off of the shelves. I remember that most of the associates sit in the back room and watched the news about all night. The world will never be the same.

God Bless America, our home sweet home!!!!

Jeremy

i was bagging corn at a seed farm in Johnstown, Ohio, Listening to Howard Stern we all thought he was joking at first till the second plane hit, and the girls from the office came out freaking out. they sent us all home from work that day.

Just got off night shift finishing up a turbine O/H at a pulp mill in Baton Rouge walked into me hotel room and turned on the TV. Watched the first tower burning and thought I was watching a movie at first then the second plane hit. I took me 4 days to get a flight back to Canada, I just wanted to get the hell out of there. My condolences America.

I was on holidays by the Alberta/B.C. border.
The ex and i were just sitting down for a beer in a tavern and they had the channel on just after the first plane hit. Then we saw the second plane hit live on t.v. I felt sick to my stomach and thought, here we go, world war 3 has started. I was totally shocked.
The world hasn't been the same since.
My condolences to the family and friends of all the people that were lost due to that chickenshit attack.
