Changed the flex plate and put it all back together hit the starter the car fired right up shut it off and went to start it again and it just made a bad noise so i had a look and the nose of the starter is smashed off . 70 duster 904 small block . I never had this problem before . I have one starter left don't wanna smash it up .

I think there are two different starter mount cones maybe? is it a mini starter? I recall seeing a thread on this before...

That takes up a few thousandths of an inch figure 1mm is .039 inch etc. but this reminds me I am about to mini starter my A 833 and I need the dust shiels also...

Photos of starter would help. I can picture smashed off, cut off, and broken off, all under different situations.

No and never had it in before but i do have one around here somewhere .

I could be wrong but I thought that plate besides acting as a shim, also is used to align the starter.

Is there a reason for the top mounting hole to be a fair bit larger than the bottom hole ?

IIRC the mini starter does not engage in the snout hole that the standard starter does. that means there is no end support for the starter.

Side note...

had a 98 Mercury sable with a V6. one day my wife went to start it and bang. then nothing. the starter exploded and wedged a chunk of itself between the block and the flex plate. turns out the engine hydro-locked from a Head gasket leak and the force the starter applied and then suddenly stopped destroyed it.

MAYBE you have a kickback and that shattered the starter?

yes the mini starter has a snout that engages in the hole

If the starter or motor gets jammed it'll have enough power to break the nose off I had it happen once. It was on a brand new mini starter.
