Starter Problems(again)

-
Apologies for it being late but I made some progress and wanted to update.
I returned and refunded the old new starter, and after going to like 7 different stores trying to find on entry’s had it in stock, I spent a little extra and bought a mini starter. When I got that tossed on the engine finally cranked over. I think it may be timed wrong, be 180 out, because it wouldn’t fire but would backfire every so often.
Thank you all for your help I really couldn’t have figured this all out on my own I appreciate it. Being in the young side I know I lack the knowledge you all have and I appreciate you sharing it and helping me learn on the way.

So glad you at least got one problem fixed. It can be frustrating.

It is very very easy to avoid the "180 out" problem. Pull the no1 plug, crank the engine until you start to feel compression. If you've never done this, you might have to go 'round a couple of times to get the "feel."

Once you start to feel compression, look for the marks, and wrench or bump the engine NOT until TDC, but rather, where you want timing set, AKA 10 BTC or wherever.

Now check the rotor, is it near no.1? If not just spin the dist shaft 1/2 turn. To get the timing close, rotate the dist. "retarded" AKA CW, and then (if points) slowly rotate the dist CCW (advanced) until the points just open. If breakerless, rotate slowly until the reluctor tip and pickup are aligned. Confirm which tower the rotor is located, that should be the no1 plug.

I got it all figured out this morning. I got her running decently, I was happy with it. But I went to put ATF in and I ended up with a puddle of it on the floor :/. I also had a some chocolate milk next to it so now I’ve got more problems to figure out.

What you did was exactly what we all did at your age (except without the Internet) we relied on friends and parents and FSM and books and a lot of the time shotgunning and dumb luck!

Dor did great

Now that it can crank...

Do a voltage drop cranking test with the spark plugs in (use the remote starter button with the key off) Note the results for future and report them here

Btw, the remote starter switch is typically not designed to bypass the relay, it's meant to bypass the ignition switch

On the relay there are 4 terminals

  1. Largest lug from battery
  2. Next largest to starter (not to power the starter but to power and throw out the Bendix)
  3. The small spade terminal with the yellow IGN wire
  4. The small spade terminal that goes to the NSS.
pull the yellow connector off, clip one lead of the remote starter switch(RSS) to the terminal on the relay and the other lead of the RSS to battery positive.

With the ignition key off (and the car in park) pressing the RSS will crank the engine.

If you use the switch to bypass the relay, large lug to large lug you will likely melt the RSS

It’s not related to my starter problems anymore but I mentioned, I have found the source of the milkshake. My Dad and I pulled the pass side head and one of the head bolts was considerably longer then the others and clearly wasn’t clamping well it at all. Everything but that one bolt looks good and looks like it was went through fairly well. I do have a question though. The tops of the pistons are marked, L2426 060, I wanted to find out some info on them but couldn’t find much, figured I’d throw it up here as you all know more then I do.
Thank you

That's the old 12.5:1 domed piston for the 360. Do they still have the domes on them? Pictures will help here.

That number sounds like a 60 over TRW dome piston

For some reason the combination of 12.5:1 pistons and stock exhaust manifolds makes me chuckle.

I know it’s goofy and not ideal I’m working one getting an exhaust system. The prices of headers is really what’s holding me back right now :/. A minimum wage job only 2 days a week makes it hard.

I certainly wasn’t poking fun at you or your car, I hope it didn’t come off that way.

Throw up a wanted add here for a set. Someone has something they’d sell reasonably I’m sure.
