Tired, don't want to rant, but I am tired. Laid off in 2013 cause I didn't want to move to MI. Couldn't find full time permanent work here in this area in my field. Ended up in MI in 2015 at job I would of had in 2013. That job sucked, being there just validated the reasons I didn't go in the first place. Came back Dec last year, got BS job at some big box store not paying enough to survive.... Offered job with distant cousin who does not know how to train or manage people. Only saving grace is a little more money, better hours, and real close to home, but not enough cash to get ahead. I keep getting these ads for employment about 25 miles from home, not too far over all. But 2nd shift. Would be more money and in field I was in for many years. I just need about 10 more years to work. Job I have now will probably never amount to a real decent paycheck, just enough to keep my head above water, but just barely. Like I said, tired. Don't want to go in, but have to.......

Me too, I am on the wrong side of 40 and pretty much wised up to the BS at 40. Meaning, I realized, "why am I busting my ***, there is no getting ahead". It used to be that you could get ahead by working extra hours, maybe a half or full Saturday, but now, no. People are working long hours not to get ahead, but to get by. I think a person would be better off working minimal hours at their main gig, and having a part time or "hobby" gig on the side for supplemental income. A friend recently asked me "what do you want to do?" I said, "I want to sleep late, wake up whenever, do whatever, and drink beer and eat shrimp". He looked at me dumbfounded, but hey, at least I know what I want to do ;)

Reading between the lines - I think you know the answer and what you need to do. My daily, one way commute is 26mi. - it gets annoying at times, but there are also times when I am glad I have that 35-45 minutes to "decompress"

Over 40 years i have worked all over our province...no less than 12 different locations and the furthest from my hometown was 700 miles. The longest i lived in one spot was 7 years prior to being downsized and have been here for 17 years.I enjoyed every location and made them my home except the 2 locations in larger cities.
...but it wasn't always easy.

Save what you can(cut out the fun stuff....) and dont count on SS to save you

PS, your grammar skills are better than most

Louie, what is your field?
Paint. I worked in R&D for a paint company making paint for aerospace/jets. Both personal and public. Job I have now is kinda like a machinist job. I'm running a wire EDM. A lotta promise, but a lotta head work. Not sure where I'll end up cash wise. Plus it's only 2 miles from the house. I'll probably end up giving it 6 months and see where I am then. At least that's the plan at the moment. I know there are others out there that are in a whole lot worse shape, so I am grateful for what I have. In these current economic times, someone at my age, 59, should be thankful to have a job!

You have to define hard work? Since I was 16, I never had only one job. The most incomes I ever had at one time was 5. I worked stupid hard for over 45 years. Invested some , some were good, some not so good. But in the end at 56 I retired. Not to a lavish life style mind you, but I do what I want, which is tinkering with hot rods and spoil my grandson. Hard work and a long range plan, do work out. Ah Life is good! The biggest obstacle is your health, sometimes things are beyond ones control. Not to late to start a plan, just have to make good decisions from this point forward.

I have 10 years to go and switched to a job 34 miles from home over 2 years ago. The previous job was 31 miles away for 15 years. It sucks to drive an hour in traffic each way but ya gotta do what ya gotta do sometimes.

Well, more bs the other day. Yep, my course is clear. In order to keep my sanity and avoiding a blow up, I am going to look for work elsewhere. Several positions open at places in my previous field, so gotta try. Either that or snap on dude, and by snap I mean to speak my mind about what I think of his lack of management style and experience.

++++++++
That`s what I do, w/ exception of not that much beer, no shrimp (got sick on it as a kid) and have trouble sleeping more than 5-6 hrs .

so whats the issue? go get one of these jobs and deal with it until you get a better job... i have been driving 40 miles each way (80 mile round trip) for work 17 year now.. 2 weeks day shift 2 weeks nigh shift , 12 hour shifts, every other weekend off. it pays the bills and lets me play as i like. before that it was 12 years of midnight shift with only mondays and tuesdays off... gotta do what ya gotta do...

if i was out of work all together i'd work what i had to in order to pay the bills and take care of the family. multiple jobs, not so great shifts..etc...etc...

X's 2! Been there done that.

Worked 10pm - 6am cleaning rail cars
Come home change cloths to light biz attire for sales
Fix cars on the weekends

As time passed, dropped sales worked full time Mechanic at home. Never a shortage Of cars To be fixed!

Took care of daughter during the day time while working on cars. Stop mid day to drop drums/rotors/parts order and zip to McDonalds for lunch with the daughter, then the park, back to the store and then pick up parts and finish the brake jobs by 6pm.

2 hour cat nap and back to work by 10pm. Repeat 6 days a week.

You do what's needed, not wanted!
Because that's what MEN do!

Agreed. Gotta do what you gotta do. Dude wants to talk sometime today, wants to know my plans and he will try to work with me. I'm sure if I tell him short term he will tell me to walk.

Age doesn't matter. And as far as telling him short term, no I'm not telling him. I just threw that out there. Honesty is a good policy most times, this is not one of them.

Yeah, best not to disclose too much at the interview. You can always tell them "a new opportunity arose and I'm out of here" at any given moment. They cant argue, especially if they can't match your new gig.

Had the talk....... Not too unreasonable overall. But......his expectations are not real. I've been running these wire EDM for less than three months, and dude expects me to not have any issues with something I never saw before. And mentioned that they are a small company, seven people total, and so the money won't be there. I am making more than I was at the first place, but only just enough to meet the minimum for all my expenses. If my car needs big repairs? I'm in trouble. If water heater breaks or I have a big unexpected expense? Again, I'm in trouble. So no raise for a year...... Which means nothing but ramen noodles and beans for 12 months, which means a part time job. Burger King would be a luxury.....LOL So how old am I? Old enough to see bs when I see it. If I was retired, this would be great added cash, but I am no where near retirement. So I will continue to look for work elsewhere. As the saying goes, " To thine own self be true". Says it all in a nutshell.
