Howdy,

I have a bored .30 over 360 engine from a '78 red express. It was previously used in a hot rod D100 and has 2.02 and 1.66 valves and should make about 350 horsepower. I'm finishing freshening it up now and planning on putting it into a Dodge W250 with the 727 trans. I would like to keep the 727 trans I have and stay in budget but I know the original '78 model had a modified 727 that was more similar to a 440 BB trans. Hoping some of the good folks in here have experience with high horsepower/torque demand on a 727 torqueflite. I've heard they're fairly hearty and can handle 400+ horsepower but am still skeptical that it will hold up. Thanks for any advice in advance.

If the trans is in good shape it shouldn't be an issue. Truck LoadFlites got some heavier guts in them just for being a truck transmission. What transfer case do you have? I'd be inclined to be more concerned about that.

As long as the fluid is red and has proper cooling- a good 727 will handle what you put in front of it.

Now if you are doing reverse drive drops…. That’s another story.

Ya good point, it has the NP208. I'll keep an eye out for an NP241, looks like that would be a good alternative

I ran a stock 727 behind a mildly modified 340 (probably about 350 HP with no problems. I did get a higher than stock converter though.

We put over 800 HP in front of ours in a 3800 lb. small block car.

Also Our truck had a blower with a stock 727 . It would turn all four 38 inch diameter tires.

Never broke the transmissions in our trucks. Not even ramming the snow banks Plowing with the plow truck. A properly built 727 usually handles what ever you throw at it. Converter choice is critical. Install a lighter governor and Part throttle kick down valve to help raise shift points.

Well now I feel silly... I'll take your advice on that kick down adjustment. I'm also downgrading to some smaller shoes
