Recommendations for a car stereo set-up?

Its an addiction just like building a motor. I started off with just a radio. Now I have a 1500 watt boss amp pushing 2 10s in the trunk box, a 600 watt sony amp pushing two lanzars in the package tray and 2 5 inch coaxials rated at 100 watt rms each in the front doors. When the ghetto bangers drive by I drown em out with some skynyrd or Petty.Sometimes with some zwr.I hate rap.Oh,my head units a dual 4x50 with an ipod connection in the glove box.I dont wear gloves.lol

google "underdash stereo mount" and you will see a few. My Barracuda had one in it when I bought it but I couldn't stand how it looked out of place. It looked just like this $18 amazon unit. I pulled it out and now am tuneless.

Don't get me wrong, I would love my fastback to be filled like a jewel case with amps, speakers, crossovers, etc. I just need a better mount then that cheep plastic thing, or hide it in the glovebox.

I agree. That's the exact unit they sell at Best Buy....that I didn't like.

I run an Alpine deck that has a cd player, but let's face it ... cd's are going the way of the 8-track. I use my ipod or a flash drive with mp3 songs on it. I run an Alpine amp and Infinity Kappa speakers front and back. 6X9 in the back and 3.5 in front. I have no speaker deck since I have the drop down rear panel, so I put them in speaker boxes and mounted the amp to one of the boxes. It's loud and sounds awesome. I have a sub in a box and an amp to drive it just sitting in my garage. I think I am going to put them in as well.

Can you post a pic of where the sub box is mounted?

I think a 75 Duster allows more options. In my 65 Dart, the dash trapezoidal opening doesn't allow much. I got a small HD Tuner off ebay ~$25. They were sold as add-ons to existing radios. They have a thin faceplate you can mount on front of the dash, or in the console. You need an external stereo amp. It also receives regular stations. Haven't installed yet, my interior is currently gutted.

The trapezoidal opening can be corrected very easily with a die grinder. The factory radio faceplate will even cover the alteration if you reinstall the original sometime later. Of course it is real hard to find the shaft mount style of radio to fit the 60's era dashes.

I am basing this on a 65 valiant, I know that on a 66 dart the radio bezel is much much larger and is not something you want to alter if you are concerned with originality.

WOW!

It looks like the inside of a bad *** rocket ship.

Kenwood head unit with CD, aux. input and USB jack for iPod, bluetooth ready for hands free phone and mounted in dash, Kenwood 700 watt amp, pair Kenwood 6x9 120 watt 4 ways mounted below package tray (they fit perfect), pair Kenwood 4x6 60 watt mounted in aftermarket kick panels, pair 3.5" Kickers mounted in original speaker location using a purpose built aftermarket speaker bracket, no subwoofer... yet.

Kids!!!!
The sweet sound of dual exhaust and a nice cam is music to my ears!!! Or the "Whistle" of my Turbo LoL!

Most likely your HU will have more watts then that 45w amp you were considering. I would bet your 6x9s are rated at well over 100w. I cant stress this enough your quality is only as good as the wiring and install dont cheap out there. Depending on the OHM rating of your 6x9s get a amp that will be compatiable with the OHM rating of the 6x9s. If considering a sub later you may want to run the amp to the sub and your inside speakers to your HU.

I like both, and this "kid" has been a member of AARP for years!

LoL! I have been an audiophile for many years too! I have several trophies for DB drags here in Houston back when they were doing it at Delmar stadium. Had 4 12's in a 84 Dodge Daytona with 4 mids and 4 tweets that were all Kicker comps. All powered by 4 "American made" Linear amps pushing 6000 watts. 132 dbs! I love the "OLD SCHOOL" stuff that was made in the good ol USA!
Also installed 16 15" kickers in a Chevy Astro van with 8 Fosgate Power 1000's. Damn that thing was loud. Broke several windshields and storefront windows too!

Been there, done that! My ears are getting to old for that kinda stuff though. My Avalon has the old school MTX Thunder series 81000D bridged Mono to one Memphis 10" dvc in a dual bandpass box that I made from 7/8" MDF. Also have the matching Thunder 8302 for the Infinity Kappa mids and highs. Plenty loud for nearly 2000 watts. Talk about "Crystal Clear" sound quality!! I still dable a little in the installs now and then for friends.

Here is a good site for you guys to read and learn from,

Plenty of info to get you started!!

I have a funny story that led me to find this thread. I took my 3 year on a 40 mile drive today to see Oneida Lake. " He said, daddy can you play some music in the car?" My 64 Dart Gt is a radio delete car, so I found an amplified hidden antenna on Amazon, a Nice Pioneer 50 watt per channel with all the bells and whistles including remote and ipod hook up model DEH1300mp, it is also the most popular at only $63.00. I think I will go for the Rockford Fosgate R1693 model, priced at $53.74 pair, to replace the Sparkomatics currently mounted under the package tray. I have been told that it is not necessary to cut openings for the speakers, and still get good sound, this will not alter my delete car's appearance. I am debating on using a universal bracket material with holes already in it, and bend the two 90 degree turns, or use a universal underdash mount. I want to keep it simple. I have it all in my Amazon cart and have not pulled the trigger yet.

Sounds like an excellent setup to me. iPod hook up, remote, nicer speakers, yep that'll work good and keep radio delete status

I put a set of Pioneer 6x9s in the back of my Pontiac Grand Prix two years ago. They were $65.00 at Meijers, same ones at Best Buy were $80. Have Dart parts stored in the old box, the speaker model was TS-A6963-R. I listen to Rock kinda loud and they sounded really great, esp. for the price range, and held up well over a year. Sold the car last fall. I'll probably get the same speakers for the 67' Dart if I don't like the newer Sony's(w/ ugly space age covers) the last owner installed. We'll see, gotta get the car running & on the road first.

Does your package tray have slits cut in it to let the sound pass through. If not, it will sound like a stereo playing in your trunk.

I have never understood why people like the original poster are afraid of cutting their dash or package tray?!? Is it so when your car goes across the block at Barret Jackson you can claim that it is all un-molested? Really?!? Cut that sucker and enjoy YOUR car instead of saving the dash for the next owner. :banghead:

Rant off now.

DAMN !!!! well put, wish I read that a month ago makes sense. Might even go that route now. Easy to undo what I did

Many grills are available aftermarket or from other factory installs that gives you options for the rear speakers. I actually found a set of chevrolet grills that are metal and have studs welded on them, blasted them, painted them flat-whatever (color that matches your package tray) and used a spacer from underneath to install them. Here is how I did it with my fastback, although you could use the same concept for the package tray. You can get your local paint store to mix the paint up for you in a factory interior color, just get them to add some flattening additive to give it the correct shade for the package area. You may want to repaint the package tray at the same time so it all matches. Use some plastic or wooden spacers underneath and you are good to go. I used Infinity Kappa 6x9's but any good speaker would work well.

They also make some nice speaker kickpanels that work well. Gotta watch the depth of your speakers though.

I mounted the head unit in the rotted out glove box. Put the speakers in the kick panel.

I have given the sound aspects some thought. If it sounds really bad I will cut the tray. I traced it out from inside the trunk. My hidden amplified antenna arrived today. I installed it under the dash where the single speaker grill is located, worked like a charm. And, per instructions, it must have some opening outside of a steel covering. I will find out if this works when the Pioneer deck comes in tomorrow.

x2, Ive not had a stereo in any hotrod I've owned in years. If I need tunes I bring a ghetto blaster. Love the sound of the cherry bombs.

My brother told me the same thing, he has a 67 Firebird with a 455. I have a very quiet slant 6. I am sure I would feel different if I had a big v-8. My brother is trying to encourage me to sell my /6 car to use the money toward a v-8 car. I could make a profit on the car since 90% of the work was done by myself, and I picked up the car with a fairly new paint job for a really low price. The previous owner gave up because of the extensive mechanical work that needed to be done.
