1966 Dodge and the D-Dart 'Mistake'

-
Mr D-Dart Dude,

Anything with Dom Rinaldi out of New Jersey.

He ran a D-Dart in 1968 (F/Stock) and in 1969 when it was classed in G/Stock.

Lettered 'Big B'Wana'.

Ran 13.50's or thereabouts when I saw it.

I was in touch with Dom in Sept, 2010. We were both chiming in on a D/Dart thread on Classracer. He sent me an email with a pdf file attached -- of the car. Unfortunately, the photo was scanned with the car upside down and I haven't been able to turn it around. Can't just rotate it and save it like a jpeg file.

This is from Dom's email --- "I no longer have the car. It was stolen from the front of my Sunoco station in Englishtown NJ on Union Hill road which is the entry road to Raceway Park. The car was never found. It was stolen in April of '68 and never found.

This picture was talen at Atco Dragway in July of '67. They classified it as a G/S although it was F/S at Raceway Park. I might have pictures at Englishtown".

He still has the title for it if it is ever found.

Alan,,,,,

Some D-Dart guys would pull off the Holley Carburetor, and pop on a Carter AFB and
claim a 273/235 HP in the car.

It got them classed in G/S in 1966, F/S in 1967, and J/S in 1968.

As long as they kept the idle close to 2000 RPM, it would be hard to pick up the
radical lift camshaft.

According to Al Adam, Jon and another guy bought the car in 1970 or 1971 from Ted. Jon raced it for one year and sold it to Al Adam. The pictures that Jon sent me of the car show the engine with a Carter carb on it. It also has L/SA and 101 on the windows. Another picture is of Jon, his wife, and the car at the track -- and Jon is holding a trophy.

When I bought the car from Al, he wanted to know if I wanted to run it as an automatic or a 4-speed. My choice was the 4-speed. Much to my delight, it has an aluminum case hemi 4-speed in it. Al really wanted that trans. I think it might have been a Mopar Missle test part at one time.

I think Al raced it up in Reading, Pa. His family is from there.

Alan,,,,,

If it was in L/S or L/SA in 1970 and 1971, then they claimed 273/235 HP

1970 and 1971
L/S = (12.50 -12.99 Wt/Hp)

Aluminum-cased Hemi 4-Speed Transmission ............YES !!!

On our 67' 273/235 HP

By the way, we put on a Carter #3447 600 CFM AFB, and opened up the secondary
throttle bore opening on the cast iron intake, and also installed a
General-Kinetics .452 lift / 272* Duration camshaft in our 67' Barracuda for the
1969 season.

It worked wonders, and was worth another 4/10's. Everybody 'cheated a bit'.

It ain't cheating unless you get caught. Jon might have had the 273/235 cam in it.

I'm not positive --- but Al told me that the engine has mushroom tappets in it because it has a high lift cam he installed. He said the mushroom tappets allowed him to use a cam with 0.100" more lift. The only Chrysler small block cam with this additional lift and also uses mushroom tappets is P3690589.

Per the description in the Mopar Performance book "Factory engineered mechanical cam with mushroom tappets for speedway or drag use with good power from 5200 to 7400 rpm. Mechanical 320-320-116*. Ground on 110* centers. Valve lift 0.630" intake and exhaust". Another note I had from Al's stuff mentioned a max lift of 0.650".

The engine sounds very health. Doesn't idle worth crap. I think it has just a tad to much cam in it right now.

.630 Lift,,,,,

What did they do, cut out 'trenches' in the piston tops with a pick-ax.

We tried about '10' different camshafts, while running in Stock Class thru 1971.

* Stock Camshaft......... .425/.425 ~ 248* Duration

* Sealed Power............ .430/.430 ~ 252* Duration
* Engle Blueprinted....... .425/.425 ~ 248* Duration
* Engle 260................. .430/.440 ~ 260* Duration

Those were the 'first ones' we tried, and there was absolutely 'no'
significant improvement in increasing the performance of the engine,
or lowering the (E.T.) over the stock camshaft.

Then we tried a 'Cheater Camshaft' that was supposedly the 'Hot
Bumpstick', with the stock lift .425/.425 but had a low-taper design
with a 'secret duration'.

The car went 'slower'.

Maybe you can answer this -- what is a 436 cam? In the doc's that Al gave me on his 273 D/Dart engine work, he was doing some valve to piston clearance work using this cam. He had mentioned to me that it was a Nascar or hemi profile.

Here's some additional info on the sheet. It's dated 4-15-73

Clearance Checks:
head cc'd at 57.8 to 58.2
Forgetrue pistons untouched
436 cam 110 I cl 109 E cl

0.040 lash -- no head gasket
Cyl #1 E -- .015 I -- .029
Cyl #2 E -- .006 I -- .015

He also checked the same cylinder as follows:
w/0.022 gasket
0.010 lash
drop pockets 0.050
I cl 107

I've looked for info on the 436 cam and haven't been able to find any.
Alan

Alan,,,,

I'll see what I can dig up. many of the Camshaft Grinding Companies had odd Codes for their individual 'bump-sticks'.

That #436 sounds like the Max-Wedge camshaft specs with the .500 Lift / 300* Duration for the 273 Engine.

Iskendarian
Crane Cams
Crower
Racer Brown.........(Big with Mopars)
Lunati..................(Big with Stockers)
General-Kinetics....(Big with Chevrolet)
Chet Herbert
Sig Erson
Howard Camshafts
Camcraft
Norris
Engle...............(Big in the Northeast, as we got ours from S & K Speed Shop)
TRW
Sealed Power

Found another note -- Per Al -- the 436 cam is a 0.100 over flat tappet mushroom cam. It had low end torque with high lift and it had a short profile. Was designed for B-engine use in NASCAR. John Hyden (SP?) ground the cam. It may have been available over the counter in the 70's. He had installed it in 1973.

Just a note ---- Al worked on the Mopar Missile crew with Ted Spehar and I think Jon Rasbach did too. So "The Politician" was kept in the Missile family till I bought it. Tom Flynn owned it with Jon. Ted owned it with Ralph Costa.

Resized a few pictures ...
Not sure if the San Leandro Dart is a D/Dart or not. The rest are.

The real story behind the D/Dart can be found on this site under the story by Paul Canizzaro. He worked on the D/Dart program.

http://www.seriousviewers.com/D-Dart/story1.htm

The Musser's set the D/Stock record of 12.90 in May of 1966. That's when the D/Darts hit the track. It was game over even before it began. The best my car did in 1966 was a 12.92.

This is the Musser Brother's car that Chrysler was gunning for.
And, these are the accomplishments of that car. Ernie and Barry Musser, are out of Reading, Pennsylvania.

* Winner.......................................1964 Eastern Drag News Championships (Maple Grove Dragstrip)

* Class Winner (C/S)..................1965 NHRA Springnationals
* Class Winner (C/S)..................1965 NHRA Indy Nationals
* Winner.......................................1965 Eastern Drag News 'Top Dog Award'
* NHRA Record Holder (C/S)....1965 (October 1965 --- 12.98)

* NHRA Record Holder (D/S)....1966 (May 1966 --- 12.90)
* Class Winner (D/S)..................1966 NHRA Springnationals
* NHRA Record Holder (D/S)....1966 (July 1966 --- 12.78)
* Class Winner (D/S)..................1966 NHRA Indy Nationals
* Stock Eliminator.......................1966 NHRA Indy Nationals (Runner-Up)
* Champion..................................1966 NED 1 (Top Performance Car)

Carmine Rotunda, out of New Jersey, bought the Musser Brothers 'BANZAI' at the end of the 1966 season.

Carmine repainted it 'Goodwood Green', and added the 'Nine Vertical-Slot' Chrome Wheels.

It was still fast, and the car continued to win.

* 1967 NHRA Springnationals (C/S)......................Class Runner-Up
* 1967 NHRA Indy Nationals (C/S).........................Class Winner
* 1967 NHRA (C/S)................................................ ..National Record Holder
* 1967 NED 1................................................. ...........Points Champion
* 1967 Eastern Drag News Championships.........Stock Champion

* 1968 Super/Stock Magazine Nationals (F/S).....Stock Eliminator Champion
* 1968 Eastern Drag News Championship...........Stock Eliminator Runner-Up

* 1969 NHRA (G/S)................................................ ..National Record Holder

* 1970 Super/Stock Magazine Nationals (H/S).....Stock Eliminator Champion

Thank you Paul Caesrine for the pictures and statistics.

In that post by ratman1956 it shows the shifter and somthing sticking out underr the dash beside the steering wheel. What is that?? And the shifter isnt like the one that came in the regular 66 dart 4 speed. Mine had two ears to pull up to go into rev.

That is an Ansen Drag Brake. It's the predicessor of the line lock. If anyone knows of one that might be for sale, please let me know.

The 4-speed shifter that came in all 1966 vehicles was the Inland. I believe they needed a reverse lockout and it was the only one on the market. The one in Ted's car is a Hurst Competition Plus. Don't know why they used the straight handle. Maybe personal prefference.

This is the Poarch Dodge D/Dart 2 days after they rec'd it. And that's the Inland shifter.

I believe the Sam Brown car is alive and doing well. I think it has been restored. I've tried to get some info on the car from the present owner but nothing so far. This would be #11 on my "Survivor" list.

In addition to the factory built D Dart cars, Chrysler also had a program for retrofitting 273/4 cars already in the field. A copy of the news release sent to the press follows:

Dodge Offers "D" Stock Dart

DETROIT -- A new 275-h.p. Dodge Dart GT that meets D Stock specifications of the NHRA, AHRA and NASCAR is now in production. The "D/Dart" has a shipping weight of 2,946 pounds.

The "D/Dart" features a modified 273-cubic inch engine with a special four-barrel Holley carburetor. Other features include:

A special Camcraft camshaft (284 degrees with .495 intake and .505 exhaust), Racer Brown valve springs, a modified, full-breathing intake manifold, a low-restriction air cleaner, and a Weber clutch. Other standard items are: a heavy-duty 4.86:1 Sure-Grip 8-3/4 inch rear axle, free-flow exhaust headers by Doug of California, a four-speed manual transmission, heavy-duty suspension, and 6.95x14 B.S.W. tires.

The "D/Darts" are regular production line automobiles.

Additionally certain, basic service parts will be available through the Chrysler Parts Division, so that owners of earlier Darts may convert from the 235-h.p. to the new 275-h.p. version of the 273 V-8 engine.

The "D/Dart" has been certified by the sanctioning agencies in the D Stock class. It is expected that this car, properly prepared, will be a top contender.

A high idle speed minimizes roughness, a high numerical axle ratio is used for top acceleration, the distributor is modified for quick advance, and the ignition system is designed for optimum engine output. Due to the expected use of these vehicles, no warranty coverage applies.

Those who are interested in more specific technical details on this car may contact staff engineer Dick Maxwell, Product Planning, Chrysler Corporation, 341 Massachusetts Ave., Detroit 31, Michigan. Phone 313-883-4500, ext. 3947.

In case your local Dodge dealer does not have a full list of the part numbers for these specific components you may wish to contact performance parts specialist Ray Ryder, Chrysler Parts Division, 22631 Lawrence Avenue, Centerline, Michigan. Phone 313-539-3000, ext. 7763

As someone knowing very little about the D-Dart. How many were produced?

Sketchy numbers,,,,,,,,,

As the NHRA required '50' to be built to qualify for 1966 NHRA D/Stock.

They were built in the 'Spring' to be be ready by the 1966 NHRA Springnationals in June 1966.

Unfortunately, they didn't go over so big with many of the Dodge Stocker
Drag Racers.

I believe 'Alan Lewis' has the 'numbers'.

Alan Lewis does have the numbers and Alan Hvizdos (me) has the registry.

There were 50 built per a person in the Chrysler Archives. Vin's run from LO23D62653888 thru 937.

According to the body code, they were built on April 17, 1966 which was a Sunday. The engines are another thing. My first D/Dart had an engine stamping of B-273- 4 - 26 and the one in the race car (the first LO23 produced) is B-273- 4-27. The letter stamp is really hard to make out but it looks to be a "B" on "The Politician" engine block. The guy with the car produced right before my first D/Dart has a number of either 24 or 28. Can't find the exact number in my notes.

They probably were shipped around the last week of April or the first week in May so they only had a month to sort them out before the Springnationals

Sorry about that Alan 'H',,,,,,,,,

My mistake,,,,,,,,,

1966 NHRA Springnationals were held at Bristol International Raceway (Tennessee)
June 10, 11 and 12 in 1966.

I'm pretty sure there were '4' D-Darts listed as participants for D/Stock.

Alan,,,,,,,

This San Leandro Dodge 'Dart' is from San Leandro, California (northern California).

This car ran at the AHRA Track - Freemont Dragstrip.

The Class HSO-1 is for H/Stock Optional-1

'Multiple Carburetors' - 'Solid Camshaft' - '266 to 280 Cubic Inches'

This D/Dart was running with the 'optional' Edelbrock #D-66 Aluminum Dual-Plane / Dual-Carb Intake
with twin Carter AFB #3853 (500 CFM) Carburetors, with smaller Secondary Jets. (.065")
