No problem with the Alan slip up. How many times do you get 2 Alan's, spelled the same, working on the same goal in life -- to enlighten the world on D/Darts.

Thanks for enlightening me on this car. When I bought this photo on ebag, the lister said it was a D/Dart. When I contacted him for info on the car, he said he wasn't positive that it was a D/Dart. He said he saw one at this dealership but this wasn't the car. So it's a question in my book. I bought it because it was a cool photo from the time.

Released in 1966.

Edelbrock #D-66

Recommended Carburetors, twin Carter AFB #3853 (500 CFM) with 1 7/16" Primary x 1 9/16" Secondary
with {.065" Secondary Jets}.

69 Cuda 440,
Was the San Leandro Dart a D/Dart since it was in H/Stock? Or was it a 235HP engine? I want to know because I sent the other Alan some info on the Sam Brown D/Dart and he's going to update the website.

I'm also going to pass on the 'Albany Dodge', 'ICHABOD' and 'CINDERELLA' as being D/Darts that raced. Do you concure with this?
Thanks
Alan

Alan,

The Sam Leandro Dart, clearly a 'D-Dart'. AHRA classed their cars by Cubic Inch, so
'advertised factory' Horsepower ratings made no differnce.

'CINDERELLA" clearly a D-Dart that was originally raced in 'northern' Florida.

'ICHABOD' out of Albany, New York. Does make sense, since Albany Dodge was
a 'performance oriented' Dodge Dealership.

That car, most likely ran at the following upstate New York Tracks,
* Lebanon Valley Dragstrip
* South Glens Falls Dragway
* Fonda Speedway
* Tri-Cities (Endicott-Binghamton)
* Utica-Rome Dragstrip

Also and possibly at;
* Milton Speedway (Vermont)
* Orange Dragstrip (Fitchburg, Massachussets)

May have to 'investigate' Eastern Drag News Results from 1966 thru 1968.

I sent this info off to the other Alan. I also sent him info, pictures and a write up, on the finding/documenting of the Sam Brown D/Dart. Per the info that I received, it does exist and it's number 11 (that still exist) in my registry. Alan said he's going to update the D/Dart website in the near future.
Thanks
The "other" Alan

Alan,

There was a Dodge Dealership in Biscayne, Florida that had/ran a 1966 D-Dart
during 1966 {D/S}, lettered on the front fenders 'Wrist-Pin Charlie'

In 1967, they switched it over to a 2-Barrel and ran it in I/Stock.

I'm still digging up stuff.........

Super cool thread. Thanks for all the info and stories.

Just thinking....I believe Commando1 told me he had a D/Dart back in the day. I wonder if this or Cinderela could have been his car. He currently lives in Sebring. Might have to send him an email. He doesn't have pictures of it.

Alan,

Should have been Biscayne Dodge.

The Dart was also at the February 1969 Miami Winternationals @ Miami Speedway Park in Hollywood.

In 1969 they went back to K/Stock with a 273/235 HP Factor, and won Class at
the Miami Winternationals.

They must have been 'swapping' Camshafts, Carburetors and Intakes each year.

Or, maybe just the Carb and Intake.................'Those Tricky Floridians'

Dang -- You are a wealth of knowledge. I looked at my emails and found one from Commando1. His name is Stan. So they might not have been his car.

According to info, a photo, I got from Jon Rasbach, he raced 'The Politican' up at the Lapeer track in Mich in 1970 as an LS/A. It didn't have the Holley on it and they did modify the trans tunnel to get an automatic shifter in it. He was holding a nice little trophy in the picture. I'm thinking that he might have left the cam and intake as it was just took off the carb and carb adapter. The intake is a 771 that's for a 273 W/CAP so it could be used as a stock part.

Alan,

For 'tracking' purposes,

1966 Dodge Dart in NHRA

1966
D-Dart 273/275 HP..........D/S
Dart 273/235 HP.............G/S or G/SA
Dart 273/180 HP.............J/S or J/SA

1967
D-Dart 273/275 HP........C/S
Dart 273/235 HP...........F/S or F/SA
Dart 273/180 HP...........I/S or I/SA

1968
D/Dart 273/275 HP.......F/S
Dart 273/235 HP..........J/S or J/SA
Dart 273/180 HP..........N/S or N/SA

1969
D/Dart 273/275 HP......G/S
Dart 273/235 HP.........K/S or K/SA
Dart 273/180 HP.........O/S

1970 & 1971
D/Dart 273/275 HP.....H/S
Dart 273/235 HP........L/S or L/SA
Dart 273/180 HP........P/S

NHRA did permit the D/Dart to run in {C/SA in 1967}, {F/SA in 1968},
{G/SA in 1969} and {H/SA in 1970 & 1971}. Not sure if anybody did though, with any success.

And, the NHRA did permit a 1966 Dart GT 'convertible' to be equipped with 273/275 HP
D/Dart Package. The heavier 'convertible' was classed in {G/S in 1968}, {H/S in 1969}
and {I/S in 1970 & 1971}. Though they were never built by the Factory.

R/T,

It was my belief, that Dodge (Chrysler Performance) bit off more than they could
chew by attempting to go after the D/Stock Class at the 1966 NHRA Springnationals.

The 61' Corvette's 283/270 HP in Pennsylvania were more than capable of running
under the 13.02 Record at the beginning of the year, and then the 12.98 Record
by the Springnationals.

Dodge should have built an 'E-Package', with a 273/260 HP engine for 1966, as the
E/Stock Class record was 13.17 at the beginning of the year.

A camshaft, valve train, aluminum dual-plane high-rise and Holley Carburetor would
have worked, just a little smaller size than the 275 HP D-Dart package.

A set of 'special' 273-X cylinder heads would have been nice, with larger port
passages (15% bigger), factory installed teflon seals and #260 lb. rated valve-springs.

That would have been the package for E/S in 1966.

I don't think teflon was around in the 60's, 70's, early 80's..?

Grey Mouse,,,,,,,,

You're not serious about Teflon Valve Stem Seals not being used in
the 1960's, 1970's and 1980's are you..

You ever hear of Crane Valve Stem Seals.......

"You ever hear of Crane Valve Stem Seals.......?"
Harvey Crane,one hell of a innovator.,good point. Still using his product,I'm a Crower/Howard's guy.

Wow, this thread is AWESOME! Have always loved the 273, after owning two of them, 180 and 235 horse versions. I feel like I am sitting in a graduate history class at MOPAR University. Thanks for all the great information and for presenting it so well.

BTW, 69 Cuda 440, I have never seen the name "Tri-Cities" Dragway in print that I recall. I remember as a teenager, sitting on the grass watching the races there. Wish I could recall seeing the D-Dart there. I do remember the runs would be going along nicely, then all would get quiet...

....then you would hear the drone of a small plane as it came in for a landing. Then the racing would start up again.

Thanks for enabling us to relive some of that here, and to learn about a chapter in High Performance Mopar history.

:prayer:Thank you 69 Cuda 440.
:prayer:Thank you ddartdude.

Tri-Cities Drag-Way{Endicott Airport}
Route 17-C

Operated from....... 1961 thru 1970
Opened.................May thru October

Racing from Saturday Afternoon, into the early-Evening.

In 1967, I think they cut the races down to '8' Dates Per Year.

In 1970, the Government ended races up there, as they re-paved the
Airport Strip, and said 'NO MORE DRAG RACES'.

The Bastards.....

Yes, I was up there a few times with my Father and his racing Group 'West-Put Timing Association'.

Fun place........Binghamton - Endicott - Johnson City

69 Cuda 440, that is awesome! I actually lived near Waverly, about 45 miles away, but always felt like that was grass roots drag racing at least for us. I remember when they shut it down, but I was serving Uncle Sam by then. Don't mean to hi-jack the D-Dart thread, but this is good stuff.

And really... $1.50?

1.50 for seven hours of racin. Good grief. Awesome thread, keep it comin.

Spike Wills 69,

We were up there in 1969, in a 'big' Stockers Event with about 100 cars entered
in '$tock Class Eliminator'

Cars from Central and Western New York, North-Central Pennsylvania and Northern
New Jersey.

We were from Northern Westchester County (Jefferson Valley, New York} right
outside of Peekskill.

My father made it to the Semi-Finals with his 67' Barracuda 273/235 HP 'The Shadow'
running in K/Stock, at 13.30's.

Got beat by a red 67' Z-28 Camaro 'Z-Thing' out of Utica, New York that ran in D/Stock,
who was destroying everybody with a string of 12.40's.

My father ran about 7 or 8 times, to make it that far. We were going crazy each Round,
as Saturday went on.

Freakin Z-28...........Went on to win it all, and got $400.

Those were great days up there.
