That’ll be easy to tell by the balancer.. or looking at the crank if the pan is already off.. that piston number also leads ya to the newer sealed power labeled one..it’s a forged piston. Doesn’t look identical but just what Sealed Power (TRW) makes now.

no dampner or timing cover....has a deep pan on it but haven't flipped it over yet

don't think it worth coming to jersey for
if it is a forged crank might just roll with it ....if not i do have one ....
the cam is tight....couldn't even spin it without plyers ....not sure how to i'd that yet it does have purple paint on it

On the crank, being a 72, should be a cast external balance crank assuming it’s original. You’ll see the cast parting line on it. The balancer would of had an extra counterweight on it..

Maybe. The cast cranks started in about April of 72 and ran through the end of the 73 model year, so some 72 models got the forged crank.

Post some pictures of the crank when you get the pan off. I'll tell you if its forged or cast. Many 72 340 cars had forged cranks. The later 72 car engines had cast. What is the casted in date on the passenger side of the engine?

Make sure you examine the crankshaft regardless of whether its cast or forged, to determine if it's been ballanced. Those pistons are very heavy, and the rotating assembly MUST be ballanced to those pistons.

Yeah i don't know anything about it
Dropped the heads off at my machinist
Don't think it has hardened seats
So might just sell those off and build the O heads
Either way think I need to tare it down and have it balanced....if not a steel crank have one

On that 72’ block can you share the stamped in number on the rail? The engine for my car sold out of NY to a guy in Jersey.

And those are some Knarley looking slugs.

I dissent from the crowd on the old TRWs. I LIKE the fact that they're heavy. But as mentioned, get it balanced. After that, you'll have to do something crazy stupid to tear it up.
