Cams for 318's

-
I have to admit that the dynamic compression calculator has fooled me too.

Recently I watched a GT/? Class racer pilot an aspirated 318 (gasp) Dodge Daytona into to the high to mid 10’s in 6000’ density altitude with a Rochester on top of 1.88 valve 308 castings.

I’m budget limited like most, but witnessing a well sorted effort speaks louder than the rag publishing and desktop calculators.

Look up Shane Studely, of Precision Cylinder Head in Ceda Utah and have a conversation with him about 318’s. He claims that he’s in the High 9’s. With his Dakota.

What would be a good oil pressure for a 318 LAwith magnum heads
If your rebuilding the engine, or your in the oil pan install a Melling M72 with the high pressure spring (available on amazon). The HV72 tends to flood the valve covers. 35-40# at idle 60-70# max when running under 185 with 10/30, depending on you engine bearing clearance.

TP141 Solid lifter camshaft
422 Intake lift, .413 Exhaust lift, 284 duration I&E, overlap 64 degrees, .017 Intake lash cold, .030 Exhaust lash cold. VL-31 lifter.

The 65-67 273 was the only High Performance small block cam listed.

I'll throw one on the pile. I had Delta regrind this one for me a long time ago for a roller LA 318, and it really is "one notch above stock". Measured 9:1 with 302 heads, Performer induction, early 340 manifolds and dual exhaust. Low gear set in the 904 with a 3.23 8-3/4. Does it shake the ground? Does it make small children run for their mamas? No and no, but it's exactly what I wanted for a street cruiser. Idles nicely and pulls strong up to any speed I'm likely to go. Way too mild for a lot of you guys, but I like it.

That does look like a nice one.

This popped up for sale in my area. Full kit. Not sure how I’d be in a 318. Cam specs are not my forte.

Who here has used the Melling SPD-22 ? It's a 68 340 automatic cam. I have one in an engine I am building up
