D/Dart

-
Shame these two cars keep getting whored out. When I talked with the owner in June he didn't have a clue as to what he had.

Well --- Guess what just went up for sale on Ebag!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My old white D/Dart. He's only asking $48,888.00 or offers. Still the same stuff wrong with it. Black dash pad, missing package shelf cover, my reminder tag on the brake lines at the master cylinder, incorrect engine -- etc.

The way I figure it, a nice restored, running Dart G/T is worth about $23,000 max. If you buy this one, you're paying about $25,888 just for the VIN tag. Kind of steep if you ask me .....................

I talked with the owner in June. He pretty much didn't have a clue on what he had other than some of the papers that came with the car. I pointed out to him all the things that needed to be done in order for the car to be correct. He's a dealer and of course he's out to make $$$

You Know,

If the car was presented 'exactly' like the 1966 D/Dart in the Car Craft Magazine
from back in the day, with D/Dart shoe-polished on the windshield and with the
Car Craft Magazine decal on the fender............and several Car Craft Magazine's
smartly placed around the car............

DO IT ONCE, AND DO IT RIGHT.

The D/Dart would sell.

X2 It wouldn't take much. A true D Dart car like that could be a cool tribute car.

Yeah i'll have under 15000 in this when i'm done. Not a L023 car but a clean GT.

Nice one Ed. (Dang, I need to get mine painted) tmm

Little things that Dodge should have popped on the 1966 D-Dart
which would have made it a better performing car for 1966 D/Stock, and
worth more for the 'historical value'.

A) Lightweight 'Forged-True' Pistons {11.5-1 Compression-Ratio} {Note; Like the Mustang 289/271 HP 'K-Code'}
B} Lightweight Fan Blade and Viscous Drive Fan-Clutch
C} Deep-Groove Pulleys
D} Edelbrock Aluminum Intake with Chrysler Part Number '273 D-Dart'
E} D-Dart Cylinder Heads {Casting #66-273-D}
F} Trunk-Located Battery
G} Hurst Competition/Plus Shifter {with a 'Hurst Equipped' decal placed on each
Front Door vent-window}.
H} A low-profile functional hood-scoop, with the Ram-Air Tube and insulation seal located in
the trunk, much like the mid-year 1966 Pontiac GTO {XS Option}.

And Most Importantly......An emblem on each front fender, indicating 'D-Dart'

Yeah, if they had the cam technology we have now that thing would of been a screamer. To add to your list

Low tension ring combo
Lightweight S/6 solid lifters 82 grams
Lightwight pins

The body is an LP23 as stated on the fender tag. All 1966 Dart GT's were L=Dart P=Premium 23=Hardtop.
The LO23 on the VIN tag is because of the "Dart Drag Package".

The fact that the D/Darts were regular production line automobiles may account for the LO LP discrepancy. There are no trick body panels or trim differences to differentiate a D/Dart from a 273-4v Dart GT. I'm suspicious of the white car VIN plate. Uneven spacing and line not straight.

LO 23 D 6 2 653932

LO - Dart Superstock
23 - 2 dr hardtop
D - 273 CID V-8 (all 2v & 4v had this designation in 1966)
6 - 1966 model year
2 - Hamtramck Assembly Plant

The last six numbers are the assembly plant sequence number. Each plant started with 100001 regardless of the car line. EXCEPT HAMTRAMCK built Valiant and Dart models which begin at 500001. (emphasis mine)
(source Chrysler Corporation Production Production Option Code Book 1966 - 1968, Fourth Printing, Jan. 1996. page 1. Galen Govier ed.)

Not all Darts and Valiants were assembled at Hamtramck. The sequence number would put this D/Dart car pretty deep into the production run. That would put this car well into 1966 limiting a team's ability to tweak on it before putting it on the track.

Here's the PR release that I have on the D/Dart program. Wish there had been a date on it. I have no idea how many retro-fit kits were sold.

Dodge Offers "D" Stock Dart

DETROIT -- A new 275-h.p. Dodge Dart GT that meets D Stock specifications of the NHRA, AHRA and NASCAR is now in production. The "D/Dart" has a shipping weight of 2,946 pounds.

The "D/Dart" features a modified 273-cubic inch engine with a special four-barrel Holley carburetor. Other features include:

A special Camcraft camshaft (284 degrees with .495 intake and .505 exhaust), Racer Brown valve springs, a modified, full-breathing intake manifold, a low-restriction air cleaner, and a Weber clutch. Other standard items are: a heavy-duty 4.86:1 Sure-Grip 8-3/4 inch rear axle, free-flow exhaust headers by Doug of California, a four-speed manual transmission, heavy-duty suspension, and 6.95x14 B.S.W. tires.

The "D/Darts" are regular production line automobiles.

Additionally certain, basic service parts will be available through the Chrysler Parts Division, so that owners of earlier Darts may convert from the 235-h.p. to the new 275-h.p. version of the 273 V-8 engine.

The "D/Dart" has been certified by the sanctioning agencies in the D Stock class. It is expected that this car, properly prepared, will be a top contender.

A high idle speed minimizes roughness, a high numerical axle ratio is used for top acceleration, the distributor is modified for quick advance, and the ignition system is designed for optimum engine output. Due to the expected use of these vehicles, no warranty coverage applies.

Those who are interested in more specific technical details on this car may contact staff engineer Dick Maxwell, Product Planning, Chrysler Corporation, 341 Massachusetts Ave., Detroit 31, Michigan. Phone 313-883-4500, ext. 3947.

In case your local Dodge dealer does not have a full list of the part numbers for these specific components you may wish to contact performance parts specialist Ray Ryder, Chrysler Parts Division, 22631 Lawrence Avenue, Centerline, Michigan. Phone 313-539-3000, ext. 7763

The LO23 on the VIN tag is because of the "Dart Drag Package".

The door tag denotes that the car is one of the 50 cars produced as a Dart Drag Package.

Fender tag shows the car as it was when it started out in life.

What I remember, Dodge wanted to get the D-Darts out there before
the 1966 NHRA Division Points Meets got going in {May 1966}
and the NHRA Springnationals at Bristol, Tennessee for the first week of June.

As well as the Nascar-Drag Springnationals at Richmond, Virginia.
