Clearance due to turning such a large diameter prop.

The F-4U Corsair was designed with the 'gull' wings in order to get the fuselage up high enough for the massive large-diameter prop to clear the ground. Check out the design, the landing gear are located at the junction of the gull-wing "elbow". Great design and outstanding aircraft.
(whoops - looks like barge beat me with the answer while I was writing my long-winded post)

Great thread, Joe. I have a lot of favorite designs from WWII: The P-40 has always been a favorite due to the shark nose art; the P-38 is just too cool; the P-51 (later designs) is just a beautiful aircraft; the B-25 is a great design with outstanding capabilities - a twin-engine medium bomber with the heart and soul of a fighter; and the B-17 was like a heavyweight boxer that could just keep taking body punches and still beat you.

Me109 was a beautiful plane as well as the Me262 BUT The all time favorite of mine is the Spitfire. Just an iconic and tremendously successful fighter. Saved England from certain defeat.

Whew! I'm with a few of the guys and can not pin point ust one aircraft as a fav. On the American craft, P-51 Mustang is the hot rod gem I love and once the Brit's gave us there (I think it was) the Merlin engine, things improved big time.
The P-38 and the F4U round out the top 3 for me. Seen a F4U fly once.

The Brit's Spitfire is the Golden boy taking the lead over the Hurricane which I thought was nice. There the back bone of the RAF until the spit came out in force. The real and biggest defenders of England during the assault.

One of my Fav. Brit planes is the Tempest. Now that was a hot rod of a plane.

The Germans IMO, had boring ugly planes save a few. Love the ME 262.

Growing up on Long Island, the Republic air port where the P-47 was made was but a few minute drive down the Hwy. and has since been turned intoa measuem. And a very good one. Also, "UP" the block was Gruman. Seeing Hawkeyes flying daily and a Tomcat every once in a while was great.

Twin tails and a great slogan I love to see, read and stand by.
"Anytime Baby!"

I love the German ME-109!
Also the American Mustang P-51!
And the British Spitfire!
And also the Japanese Zero!

Sign me up for a Stuka.
A close second is a "Flying Tiger"
They are the most menacing looking planes i have seen.
Great thread!
My dad was in WW II, (Canadian) and he said the Stuka was the most feared by the ground troops.
He used to haul supplies to the front, ammunition, fuel, water, etc. by truck.
Good looking plane too, the Stuka was.
I love the plane and pics in the original post, i thought it was called a "Lancaster"
Tom.

My grandfather was in WWII, mostly serving in Holland to the best of my recollection. Sadly, he passed away 25 yrs ago.

He was just awarded a special medal for his work in liberating Holland about two weeks ago. I think it was the 65th anniversary or something. My grandmother accepted it for him.

I always liked the Spitfire, due to my British background, but have grown to like both the Corsair (thank you Blacksheep Squadron) and the P51 Mustang.

Every summer my buddy's dad would take us to the Abbotsford Airshow. Man did those planes ever look cool. The new jets are nice, and put on a good show, but nothing can compare to the old piston engines.

Comox has an Air Force base so we get a lot of planes flying overhead. This is where all the fighters were stationed during the 2010 Olympics. The Base has a great museum. We go by every couple years to see what's new.

Tom.

I forgot about the Stuka, that was a bad *** plane.

My uncle flew a TBF Avenger in the Navy during WWII, he didn't make it back though...

I'm glad everyone is liking the thread. The idea came to me after seeing 49limo's 49limo with the long hood, I was thinking how cool it would be to put a Merlin engine it, lol. Turn it up!

B17.. among other reasons, because my grandfather was a belly-gunner in one.

B24 as well- something about the big bombers is very compelling.

14,000 produced, & according to record, 1,500
'kills' in the Battle of Britian . roughly 300 more than the
Supermarine Spitfire.

Thanks for the offer OC! If I got to see any of these planes fire up in real life I'd flip my lid. :-D

For me, i would have to say the B-17.
I went up in this one when it makes the tour here in Sacramento.

Mine, P-38 or B-17

My dad, who retired from Boeing, worked as a Special Projects engineer from 1960 to 1995.

He helped restore the Boeing B, the B17 they restored a few yrs ago. He took me down there one and i crawled all over that thing. Met a guy, who must have been 90-95 yrs old, who actually drew the blue prints for it. His name was on them. I got one thing to say.

Those kids had some balls flying combat missions in any of those planes. The cockpit in no bigger than the front seat area of your car really.

I crawled back to the tail gunner position. He is sitting on a bicycle seat, on top of his ammo, with some boiler plate in front of his chest and his lap.

I cant imagine sitting there, with another airplane 40 or 50 feet away shooting at you. Those guys had serious balls to do that.

He also helped restore the Boeing 307, twice, after it went in the water on Alki.

I've always like the F-4U and F-4J Corsairs. Love that gull-wing look, and they sound amazing.

I don't think posted pics are necessary so let me offer a salute to two of the most important aircraft and their crews: Enola Gay and Bock's Car.
