Hi there all,

I have a 318 that's a tad smoky. Predominantly on deceleration, so I'm hoping it's the valve seals. I've had the car a little over a week and just got around to a tune up today.

Wires, cap and rotor are all fine. Might replace the coil although it's seems to be ok, any high spark coil tips?

In any case, prior to today she ran on maybe 5, max 6 cylinders. Pulled all the plugs to find that the #1 plug was fouled and wet, not firing in other words. All other plugs were completely black except #8 which, was still terrible but at least a bit better. I suspect that cylinders 1,4 and possibly 3 weren't firing at all or properly.

Set the timing to around 10 degrees, it was way off at 35 degrees! I adjusted the carb, was way too rich. Runs like a champ, we'll have to see how quickly it fouls out again etc. From what I've read so far my intake gasket or valve seals could be leaking. If it's anything bigger I'm just gonna hunt a 360 down and drop it in rather than rebuild this.

The coming week I'll see what changes and report back here to hopefully isolate oil burning options. I'm hoping oil was seeping into the non combusting chambers and will now burn off after a few trips. (wishfullthinking much?!)

My main question:

I'd like to have my HP estimated by the you guys, I've yet to figure out what my drivetrain is, I'd just like your opinions of HP produced by the engine at the crank.

I have a stock 318, stock heads cam etc.

2bbl Carter Carb

Hooker Performance Headers

True dual 2.5" exhaust fitted with Flowtech Raptors. True dual so no H or X

The fan blades have been removed and it's fitted with an electric fan.

Power steering deleted

The only thing running off the crank pully are the alternator and the waterpump.

What am I producing roughly now?

What would a 4bbl 600 to 650 cfm carb do for me?

Last but not least, what would be a nice mild street cam (might as well when the 4bbl goes in)? I'm looking for the best cam with leaving the heads etc. stock.

Thanks
David

probly 170 or so. depends on the heads. if its a 73 motor you might get 200 out of it with a good intake and 600cfm carb. i wouldnt go higher cuz its bone stock. however if you start doin some head work and change the cam and go a good bit bigger like .484 lift and some mild porting id go with a 650. if you leave it bone stock go with a stock 360 4bbl intake and carb off an olld truck or something. nothing too fancy. gotta get all 8 firing right first

Probably around 200 hp, maybe a bit more. With a carb maybe another 10 -20 hp ?

The smoke is either from leaky valve seals or maybe some carbon build up in the cylinders. try running some spray carb cleaner down the carb while revving it and see what happens.

i have a 318 with a mild cam 360 j heads and headman headers etc. and i have a holley 650 dp and it falls on its face of the line then it starts doin ok gettin up to speed so you might want to go smaller just my 2 cents

I would not do much with the cam until you find out what the smoke issue is. To put much anything bigger in it cam wise you'll need to swap valve springs most likely. At which time you can put new valve seals in. I'd put something like a stock 340 cam in it, if its the seals.

426 - unless your car is a manual, you should use a vacuum secondary carb, the double pumper carb is probably opening too fast for the engine to respond to the vacuum drop, when you mash on it, causing the bog.

Thinking the carb clean could clear out carbon deposits you mean?

What about piston rings being the cause of oil leakage....I should probably just post a video. I'll make on tomorrow.

Will you guys tune in next time?

David

First find the source of your oil use. How many miles are on this engine? I would bet that the guides themselves are shot. Also, you probably have a nylon toothed cam sprocket that WILL break.

If your plans involve a future 360, go find one and run the 318 until it breaks. Otherwise, figure some head work in the near future (at a minimum).

Yes exactly. It might help some, then again it might not. No big deal, at least here in the US a can of spray carb cleaner is a few bucks. To determine if its rings do a leak down compression test.

Thanks for your opinion, bleak as it may be ;)

I assume to see what kind of cam sprocket I have I'll need to pull the intake manifold?

Would the engine code suffice to figure out what came in the engine origionally or did they all have nylon sprockets from the factory?

What relationship does the cam sprocket have to my oil leak or were you just referring to it as preventative maintenance?

Why do think the guides themselves are shot and not the seals, and last but not least (there are no stupid question but here comes one anyway)

By guide do you mean valve stem? In other words; What's a guide?

Tia guys.

David

The guides are the parts that contain the valves in the heads, and maintain the oil clearance and the sealing area (called valve seats) relationship between the head casting and the valve. They do wear out, and as they were, the valve seals get overworked and leak.
