Just how quick were the 273 Commando's in the Quarter-Mile.

-
Oh Well... I hear that a lot... But, So What... I like MY 273 4bbl's... I have had two... First One was my 1965 Dart GT Charger 273 w/4speed... BRAND NEW out of Brads Motors Fall River MASS.
Got it the same day the 65 model year hit the Show Rooms (White with Red interior) And it was QUICK, for a 273... Made a lot of NEW Proud Mustang Owners fear Darts that sported the Single LARGE Black Exposed Resonator Tip (early ones did not have the stainless tip)... And the Sound that came from it !!!

My 2nd 273 4bbl was a Commando "S" Barracuda w/4speed I purchased in 1973 for $400.00 from the original owner... I thought about putting a 340 in it... but the 273 has endured and it Surprises many Peeps when they hear it or see it launch... Keeping in mind, it's a 273 CID!!!!!!!!!!!

I for one like the 60's... And I'm proud to show my 65 Cuda... Even if my car and "I" belong in a museum!!! (I LIKE This THREAD):blob:

What I truly like about this hobby is you can do it your way, with your time, and your money. Anybody that wants to "shame" you for not building the motor they think is a bully. I like all small block mopars. Work with what you want, it's yours. I've probably personally owned between 25-30 318's. I've also owned 340's, 360's, and 273.

Oh, it's not that I don't like other motors... I've owned (as Original Owner) 66 "Hemi" Charger (Sporting the Magnisium Cross Ram & 383 4bbl fender badging), 67 440 GTX, 69 340 Swinger <--- that I dressed up as a 273 4bbl... That I had a lot of fun with !!! (And other Mopars)

But in the end... I have a 273 4bbl... again!!! (So, I use to be a bully you might say)

I think you misunderstood.
The spec. I was referring to,is the .76hp/cid. Ergo; .76 x 318 =241.68 hp.
I could see how you made the jump.Post #77 edited.

As to the .97, well that was referring to the 273;ergo, .97 x 273 = 264 hp. This would indeed be a race273.
I agree that 1.1 on a 360, which being 396 hp. would not be a race engine, but certainly a pretty hot streeter.
On a 360, 1.2 hp/cid is still streetable(430hp),cuz in a 2900 lb A, it could easily go 12.7 on street suspension, a stockish TC, 3.55s and probably on skinny street tires.

The whole aim of the story was in response to poster 273, who in post #71, stated " My current 273 should run 12's.. ", and in his Avatar is an early Barracuda. For this to happen, the story applies; 2900 lbs, 264 hp, and a race chassis, minimum ET of 12.7sec. Chryslers empirical data is hard to argue with. Since he said "should",I was merely trying to help him achieve his goal(s).

My Barracuda is set-up for road racing. I could be fun swapping out my big torsion bars and soften up the front shocks etc for a trip to the drags :).
The 273 in it now is basically a race motor (over 400hp). Its running a solid roller, EQ Magnum heads 12.1 comp. It doesn't stop me driving on the street though. Last week it did 500km's round trip to the track and back and over a 100kms of flat-out track racing (on pump gas)..

mph
According to that same #40 bulletin, your 400hp, 273 auto, has a w/p of 2900/400=7.25, and should go a minimum of 120 in the qtr @ about 11.1 sec; all with a race chassis. A stick car, in the late 70s would have gone 2 mph faster and possibly dip into the 10s.
A 400hp,NA, 273 would be very special indeed. That's about 1.46hp/cid, and it's running in; very hot street360 or supercharged territory.
Sweet!

So how about telling us a little more about the build? Ima gonna guess your cam has an ICA of 80* or better?

Winter 1968/1969

After running the 273/235 HP for nearly 2-Years, and getting down to the 14.30's
my Father finally yanked the Engine out of my Mother's 67' Barracuda.

The block was bored .040" over, and we got a set of Mopar 10.5-1 Pistons. Yes, they
were heavy-slugs.

The block was 'decked' to specs, and the deck surface was 'O-Ringed' to insure a
proper seal. {those damn 4-Bolt per Cylinder Head Bolts}.

No balancing in those early days. And the Crankshaft was 'polished only'. And the
Connecting-Rods were not even reconditioned or checked for out-of-roundness.
We even kept the same original Rod-Bolts.

That was 'norm' back then.

We did get a set of 'Premium' Piston Rings, which were a set of 'Perfect Circle'
Chrome-Moly {#5878} units.

And we did use TRW 'Clevite 77' Bearings. But that was it, along with a High-Volume
Oil-Pump.

No Deep Oil-Pan either. Just a 'windage-tray' off of the Mopar 340.

What I truly like about this hobby is you can do it your way, with your time, and your money

Absolutely agree.

This video is a great example.

:
No sir, you can own any motor and not be a bully, or you can own any motor and be the bully. But many times if someone wants to rebuild a 318 (per say), and would be happy with it, many would all but "tell him off" because he isn't doing a 360. I see it all the time. I too, have owned big blocks, small blocks, slants, 3.9 V6's, oh well, I guess were off the thread topic.... lol

The class the 65 Barracuda runs in now is M, i just finished building my 65 cuda 273 commando, first time out being easy on car it ran 12.50s, that is with stock lift cam and stock iron rockers, stock pistons, and 88 truck iron heads. The motor does like a some RPM to run good.

Station Wagon Man

The 1957 Chevrolet 'Handyman Special' was a 2-Door Station Wagon. The 283/270 HP
was a 'Solid-Cam' Engine with a 'Dual-Quad' Carburetor set-up.

The 1957 'Beauville' was a 4-Door Station Wagon, high-trim model. The 283/283 HP
was a 'Solid Cam' Engine with a Rochester 'Fuel Injection' set-up.

They were 'very tough' to beat.

It took until 1971, for Dave and Judi Boertman to end the dominance of Chevrolet in the
{12.50 to 12.99 Wt/HP} Junior Stock Division.

'The Rod Shop' 1971 Dodge Coronet 'Station Wagon' was capable of running 12.70's.

I think 318willrun is on to something. There is a reason they dropped the 273 after people drove the 318 for a few years. Even in it's hottest solid lifter, 10.5:1 compression, and 4 bbl form it wasn't any quicker then a mild manner hydraulic cam 2 bbl 318. The problem is nobody seemed to be testing a 318 A body in 1968 even though that is what most people were buying.
Here is the best 273 road test time I have seen 15.9@85mph with a 4 speed 3:23 gears. That's pretty good.

In 1969

My Mother was running 13.90's @ 100 MPH while classed in K/Stock.

It was good enough to garnish her with a 'boat-load' of Class Trophy's
during 1969 {Dover Drag Strip ~ Wingdale, New York}

But, not good enough to be competitive in Stock Eliminator.

The National Record was ......... 13.18

We got a 'Lunati' Legal-Cheater-Cam, which had a wider lobe area, which helped immensely over the 'stock' Camshaft.

Chevy John,

Lots of guys were running the 1968 Chevelle '300' with the 327/250 HP {Code; L-73}
in K/Stock in 1968.

They also came equipped with a Power-Glide for the Automatic Transmission.

A very light car at #3155 lbs. ......... #3155 lbs. ~ 250 HP = 12.62 Wt/HP

I don't know about 1/4 mile, but my 67 commando jumped up and danced when I punched it at 40 mph, it also trimmed off the studs from my snow tires off the line in front of the Stone Pony one night, oh, and it got 22 mph (auto trans/ 3.23 SG). I'll take one any day if you don't want it. Loved my commando!

Back-in-the-Day

Running in the {12.50 to 12.99 Wt/Hp} Stock Class

The 1957 Chevrolet ~ 283/283 HP 'Solid Cammed' Fuel-Injection Engines were tough Bastard's to hold off.

We could get them 'Out-of-the-Hole', and run away from them over the first-half
of the Track.

But once they got up enough RPM's, they came on like a Rocket over the last 1/3
of the Track.

Those 'Fuel Injection' units were like a Nitrous Boost at Top-End.

Rico Suave

For 1970 NHRA Class > L/Stock

We upped the Gears to 5.13.

But the Valve's started to float 'wildy' getting into Top-End.

We switched to {non-legal} Racer Brown Valve Springs {Single-Coil w/Damper}.

My Mother was down into the 13.70's @ 102 MPH.

Again, she had no trouble at all in Class.

But in Stock Eliminator 'Money Class', the 'Top' L/Stock cars were running 13.20's @ 105 MPH.

The hot cars, were the 1969 Camaro 'convertibles' with the 350/255 HP engine.

The old adage ......... "You Can't Outrun Cubic Inches"
