My 71 Duster Project

-
Here is the latest on the car progress. I rolled her out of the garage last weekend and started the long process of wet sanding. I had one of my friends from the car club come over to help as he has auto body experience. I had to start with 800 grit due to some orange peel and worked my way to 2000 grit. I bought the Meguires stage 1-3 compounds for the cutting process. I finished all of the wet sanding and was able to use the stage one medium cut before I ran out of daylight. The paint looks a lot smoother and I can actually see myself in the paint! I plan to use the stage 2 fine cut and mirror finish last and it should come out nice! I did find a few thin spots in the paint on the body lines where the paint came off. Its not too noticable, however, it sucks. Other than that she looks good! I am not complaining considering that this is my first paint job on a car. Here are some pics.

I spent all day yesterday finishing up all of the wet sanding and polishing on the car. It turned out awesome! Now it is ready for its first wax and then I can order the stripe kit from challengergary here in the next couple of weeks and put them on. Question...should I wax before putting on the stripe kit of after? They are matte black so when I do wax, do I wax the black sections of the car as well or just the blue? Wouldn't that make the matte black sections shiny? Let me know what you all think!

No wax for the matte black.....
No wax under the decals........

Just my 2 cents

Looks Dam Good... Sweet !!!!

Time to re-stripe Hwy. 198 .... :) :) :)

OK sounds good, no wax on the black. Thanks for the inputs all! Well, here is an update. I am finally getting the axles, brakes and rims/tires replaced. The rims are not what I originally wanted but I am getting them from a hookup plus they are one piece aluminum so I dont need to worry about them rusting out after a few years like these last ones did. They are the Summit quick 8 (Weld Draglite knockoffs). 15x7 in front and 15x8 in rear with 205/60/15 up front and 245/60/15 in the rear. The brake conversion for the front is the right stuff BBP kit. The rear brakes are going to remain drums, however, I am putting Dr. Diff's 10 x 1/2 BBP drum kit on in addition to his new BBP axles. Well, upon tearing down the rearend, look what we found! Not good, so now I have to replace the gears in the rear. Also found out why the outside splines on my old axles are so worn. The inside side gears on the sure grip are worn the same as the outside sections of the axles which makes me believe that the sure grip was not setup properly (using the axles to align the inner and outer side gears) causing spline misalignment. Luckily I can replace the side gears as I am running a clutch style sure grip. It would not be a bad time to check everything out while its apart anyway. Here are some pics. I will post pics once I get the new parts in addition to the final build progress. Here are some pics of the damage in addition to the old tires and rims coming off for the last time!

Here are the new rear 10 x 2 1/2 big bolt brakes that showed up today. Also took some pics of the big bolt axles in comparison to the small bolt old ones. The front disc brake conversion is back ordered so I will send pics when those get here. Just need to save up some money for the rear end parts and I will be ready to install everything. I am heading to Fallon, Nevada this weekend for a week so things will be on hold for a little bit.

Turned out really good! I used to do that for a living and now i do it for customers I paint cars for.. It is honestly my least favorite part of restoring cars period! I would rather sand bondo lol,

Looking really good! Your progress is impressive and the hard work is paying off!

My Dad helped me out get the stripe kit for the car for my birthday. I ordered it through challengergary here on the forums and it came out pretty nicely. The only thing that I am not happy with is all the bubbles in the hood 340 one. It looks like a 2 layered decal and there are bubbles in between the two layers. Hopefully they will lay flat over time. Here are some pics.

That is the gas cap that has been on there and it has been working so I have no plans to change it. Thank you all for the comments! Here are some pictures of the additional decals added to the stripe kit. I also got the tires in and got them mounted and balanced on the rims. The fronts are BFG Radial T/A 205/60/15 and the rears are BFG Radial T/A 245/60/15. Let me know what you all think!
