If you go to any shelter, almost all of the dogs are pits. I know some are good, but they don't fix them. It's a sign that the owners are tough. But having a dog bred to be aggressive, and they don't have them fixed is moronic and dangerous.
I say that the media on this one subject is correct. I have to carry a gun with me whenever I take my dog for a walk. I have 2 pits across the street. 2 more next door. One down the street. Whenever the pits down the street, or the next door neighbors dog see mine, they go into attack mode. It is a shame that we have to carry weapons just to take a walk.
A study referenced earlier in this thread stated that pits/pit mix are responsible for 91% of human deaths due to dog bite in 10-30 year olds.
I carry a "cane" when I walk my shepherd, cause there have been instances of loose strays in my neighborhood. (4ft x 2" tree limb, conveniently shaped)

Exactly how I am. If I have my pants or overalls on, my gun is in my pocket. Out here in the woods, specially in the spring, it's snake season. It's always two legged snake season. lol
I have never been asked about owning a dog, I don't know of any insurance company that's going to insure for something a dog might do.
I don't think you can get a dog (or cat) out of a shelter that is unaltered. Certainly can't in california.
You can't here in Georgia, either.
