Unbelievable. *crybaby alert.

Some states (just a few) actually allow parking in handicap parking spaces with a disabled veteran plate even if the plate does not have the international symbol on it. This caused a ton of controversy in Texas where it is allowed, but has not been changed yet. This is not allowed in VA where I live. Either way, if New Mexico does not allow for this exemption then she is dead wrong if she does not have a placard or a plate with the international symbol. I will say, you can receive handicap plates for mental illnesses, like PTSD, it just depends on your doctor signing off on the necessary paperwork. The DMV does not get to adjudicate this decision if a doctor signs off. This is a controversy in a lot of states because of the proliferation of people with placards when they seemingly have no discernible disability. I work in the world of disabled veterans and people with disabilities and I can tell you that handicap parking is one of the most fought over and misunderstood issues out there.

Even so, the person with the qualifying condition was not onboard. She was not authorized to park in a reserved space and knew it. Statements like "I never park in those spaces" and moving her car when warned about a possible citation are proof of that. Whining about having a bad week and how her heart broke for "all those people" who don't appear to have bad enough disabilities to warrant handicapped tags is just a smoke screen.

I also have to ask...if she was qualified and properly placarded and she saw someone else parking in a reserved spot without the required cred, how different would her Facebook rant be? I think we all know the answer to that one.

It's obvious that she hadn't taken her Prozac before posting that stupid mess.

Absolutely. Nothing gets the BP up more than to see someone in a lifted 4X4 crew cab With a HC placard hanging from the mirror that is obviously not the person who it got issued to. In California you have to carry on your person the registration card for the HC placards. I think the fines start at about $400. in most cities for illegal HC parking. Never a cop when you need one.

Actually, I'd like to hear her indepth analysis about how mold screwed her up, that would be good!!

I've seen and been involved with many a handicapped parking situation, and I can tell you that people just don't care! They'll park in the zebra zone right up next to the lift door, take all of the "Van Accessible" spots in their small cars, then just walk into the store!! Sadly, Nella has to deal with this stuff everyday!!

The wife and I have Coffee in the evenings at Wawa. I see it happen all the time as they have tables out front that we sit at. The majority of the people that park there without a placard or handicap tags???? The young and Mainly certain minorities.

Well, mold can make you very sick but she claims everything under the sun does. She even *youll love this* claims to be allergic to cats. Well, she spent 16 nights with us last month sleeping in the spare bedroom where, the other 349 days of the year, our 18lb cat lives. Sleeps on the bed and in the blanket they slept in. I have never seen her sneeze, rub her eyes, or claim to be itchy while staying with us. So I have to wonder what else is she fibbin' about?

Dont know anything about this post, but my son used to be allergic to cat hair. It has a high amount of silicone in it , according to the specialist. Has out grown it now pretty much.

And So many get away with a disabled tag, report theirs stolen to get a second tag. Think its a joke that they can park wherever they want. On mommy or daddys tag.
My mom has a tag, busted hip and replaced years back. If we go shopping,i drop mom off at front door and park like a proper human shoud. Easier than crossing a slippery street in tge winter. I respect those parking spots. Sometimes you have to speak up, fedex guy did.

Vetran in town parks so close to front door at a restaurant, people with wheelchairs cant get in. 3 feet in one of 3 directions would not impede anyones travel.

I don't want my rant to become a debate over which ailments are real or not. For the record, I believe these things exist. My issue is that this particular person seems to be exaggerating and/or exploiting to quench her munchausen's.

we get it, regardless of if she suffers from it or not, she does not posses the proper qualifications to use the handicapped spot
(kinda like when i take my wife's aunt out with us, even though she is shy one leg, i still cant park in a handicapped spot because i/she doesnt have the placard)

Precisely.

All the other country's problems aside, this country is doomed.
Tell you how I know.
My wife has been legally disabled for 20 years but never wanted a handicapped parking permit.
I got her one last month because she is so bad now that she needs a hip replacement.
So Friday after leaving the doctor, we made a rare stop at the mall for her to get a new watch battery.
There was a row of handicapped parking at the mall entrance and it was full.
But over on the front of the next isle there was an single van accessible place which was vacant.
You know, one of those sideways kind.
She said to park there.
But I said: "No. I'll drop you off, park and meet you inside. Save that for a van."
So when we were coming back out of the mall a new red convertible Camero was pulling into that van place.
Two people got out of it and skipped, dance and jigged their way into the mall.
Handicapped placard laying on the dash.
Also where I work, there are veterans milking the "disability thing".
That apparently allows them to use handicapped parking here.
All the veterans I know are "disabled", except about one.
And he told me the other were trying to get him to game the system too.
True.

This is an older thread.

You know, Nella doesn’t mind not parking right up front, as she has a powered wheelchair and can drive as far as she wants without tiring. However, there are no spaces far away with enough room to unload her from the van, and someone will always park right next to you, so I have to back out of the spot to load her. It also makes it more difficult to drive through the parking lot when it’s snowy outside and the parking lot isn’t well kept. Not to mention the danger of people not being able to see a person in a chair over their hood while they fly through the parking lot lookin for a spot. But you know what? She doesn’t complain, and that there is the biggest problem with the subject matter of the OP. When you’re in a chair like Nella, I guess you get used to people taking advantage of the system in place that’s try’s to make life easier for disabled people. The people who have it tough, like Nella, don’t complain because they’re used to it, the complainers seem to always come from someone who doesn’t really need it, but thinks they do.

Well alot of lazy people here in FLORIDA (probably elsewhere )have solved the parking problem by just parking at the front door in the Firelane and not moving till there better half gets done shopping. Here's my take on the disability and handicap plates and placards ( that anyone can get by whining to their doctor ). Maybe if you can't walk and need a scooter or wheelchair to go shopping , just maybe you shouldn't be behind the wheel of a vehicle.

It is not always the driver with a disability.

I am beginning to see signs for Veteran parking near the handicap spots in stores. I bet the same scumbags violate these also and probably have never served.

State of California:

Once you have valid DV plates, you may park:

  • In parking spaces with the International Symbol of Access (wheelchair symbol).
  • Next to a blue curb authorized for persons with disabilities parking.
  • Next to a green curb (green curbs indicate limited time parking) for as long as you wish. There is no time limit with DV license plates.
  • In an on-street metered parking space at no charge.
  • In an area that indicates it requires a resident or merchant permit.
In addition to parking privileges, service stations must refuel a disabled person's vehicle at self-service rates unless the service facility has only one employee on duty.

Important
You (disabled or driver for disabled) are the only person who can use the plates for parking or service station privileges.

I've got a neighbor that uses her dad's handicap hanger. I don't know how many times I've walked past her car parked in the handicap spots in I've had to go park out in the regular parking, I asked what was wrong with her she said nothing it was her dads but she was buying his groceries. After three years of this I called the local PD, explained the situation and they didn't want anything to do with it.
It's a $200 fine for both parties, the user and the owner of the hanger for misuse in my state plus they say goodbye to the hanger.
The act of entitlement just kills me, people just don't give a **** that the spots are for those who need them and parking in them is wrong .

It is not always the driver with a disability.

AND I say it's not always a physical disability given how some people drive.:D

Just yesterday at a 4 way stop a woman on my left making a right turn, and me making a left turn.
She waves for me to go first.:realcrazy:

I think it's extremely hard for police to enforce because I don't believe they can ask about the nature of their disability. I could be wrong though. They may be able to run the number to see if the person that the placard is associated with is present??
