What is inside my 340?

The casting date on the block indicates that this motor started life as a 1972 motor. Who knows what parts it has now unless you take it apart to check.
 
My first car was an early 72 Demon factory 340 4 speed car.

I was the second owner.

Had I known then what I now know, I would have been racing that pig in Stock eliminator. It was a factory engine with steel crank, 10.5:1 pistons and 2.02 valves and the block had an early 72 casting date.

I'd give both my nuts to get that car back.

Wow that is quite a commitment to get your car back. I love my barracuda but the 273 has to go. I'm hopeful your situation will carry over to mine. Nothing like finding a diamond in the rough.

x2. Make a deal on it and roll the dice. They rolled it taking it as payment and that money's been frozen for years assuming the story's good. It looks nice either way. So it's worth something. Just not the sum of it's parts, or the sum of those parts and hope.

I appreacte the advise.....seller has no documentation.....I have the same reservation but I want a new motor and it is killing me. I'm going to have to get my eagerness in check. Thanks for bringing me back to earth with realistic expectations.
 
FYI I rolled the dice on a 72 340 for my duster. $1200.00
I bought it off an individual and was going thru a divorce, he said it was rebuilt.
I tore the engine down it had some sand in it, he was sand-blasing his car in his garage, and had the engine covered but....
The short block, had a fresh .010/.010 crank, reconditioned stock rods and .030 KB pistons.
The heads and cam were used, the heads were actually cracked on 7 cylinders.
My guess was the bottom end went, and it was freshened up.
Found a fresh set of X heads for $500 and put a new cam and lifters in it.
I have around $2k in a now new motor.

Sometimes you win, or lose.
 
1000-1500 is fair if he already has been holding on to it for two years. Tell him that floor space cleared up is worth the 1500. I guarantee he didnt knock much off the price of the restoration for that motor and trans. Your taking a gamble either way. Id offer 1000 and see what he says. If he says no ill take 1500 then id say that would be good. Just explain your taking a huge gamble on it because you really are. Like mentioned above even an engine sitting can accumulate debris depending on the environment. Especially if someone has been grinding, sanding, sand blasting etc around the engine. Especially with the upper/lower radiator hose openings being exposed and the valve cover breather hole being open. All someone had to do was drop a nut down there or down the carb

Roger that! Thank for dishing out good non-biased advise. The extra $1000 saved will go towards somebody work.
 
I think 1000 is way fair. Hell i paid around 5k for my 71 demon which needed restored but was very clean and complete, a 69 340 long block with forged crank and hi po manifolds, a 68 a-body 8 3/4 rear and a 68 a833 4 speed trans
 
New motors aren't cheep either. $5 for a built 360 on the low side and $6K for stoked on the high side.
 
If you have to build one;
There is nothing a 340 can do that a 360 cannot do better,anywhere except at a car-show..so...............
Paint it blue, and they will think it's a teener.
Or red and put a 273 air cleaner on it,just for the show
Or do what I do,leave the hood closed.
Then you won't have to answer their stupid questions.

Yeah but 340 4 speed just has a nice ring to it doesn't it

360 4 spee............nope
318 4 spee............nope

Just doesn't sound the same lol
