Brother has a ‘71 Demon he got with a 198 (I think) that he is going to scrap. Used to be the rods were worth something to the right people, but not sure if that is still the case.

Worth grabbing the rods or anything else? Or not worth the effort anymore?

198 rods can be sold for a couple of hundred dollars to someone wanting to build a ‘long rod’ slant six.
The 198 rods used in conjunction with Mopar 2.2 or 2.5 l pistons gives a near zero deck height.
Other than the rods and crankshaft, everything else in and on the motor is common with the 225.
Although none of the engine parts have huge value, the electronic distributor, valve cover, oil pan and pick up, and the cylinder head can usually be sold for 15.00 to 25.00 dollars or so. Although it is hard to give away a complete slant six engine, I once parted out a complete slant six and it was all gone in two weeks.
Sold each component set for $5.00 + shipping, rocker arm shaft and rockers $5.00, oil pump and cam shaft $5.00, set of push rods $5.00, set of head bolts $5.00, all plus shipping. It took multiple trips to the PO, but it was all gone and I netted a bit over $100.00
Keep in mind that cars that are around 50 years old may have had an engine swap. A potion of the block top deck extends outside of the cylinder head just below #1 sparkplug, behind the alternator. Look there for a 198 stamped in. Although if the block was rebuilt and the deck milled the stamping would be gone.

You can get the rods.....but at the cost of having them redone with good rod bolts and resized, you're gonna come real close to what the Molnar rods go for. So really, they're worth about what any other slant six rod is because of that. The 198 though is a good engine just like the rest. It probably doesn't deserve scrappin. I'd give a little more than scrap price for it if we weren't on opposite sides of this hunk of dirt. Put it in the for sale forum. Maybe a local member might want it.

There is a issue with the Molner/K1 rods that I seldom see addressed. The aftermarket rods have floating pins. Not a problem if you are using the dished 2.2 turbo piston, which uses a floating pin. The flat top non turbo 2.2 pistons require pressed pins, and won't work with the aftermarket rods. You need the stock 198 rods.

Well, truth be told, the Molnar rods are really made for the Wiseco pistons anyway. Were I to purchase that exotic a rod, the Wisecos would certainly be the way I'd go. I got fortunate though and found a set of the 198 rods on the cheap and had them reworked and still have way less in them than the Molnar rods. Press on of course.

Agreed. I brought this up since I got a set of each type pistons (TRW forged), with rings. Got one set for free, and one set with a bunch of other parts for $100.00
Then had a machine shop screw up 2 sets of 198 rods. One set are junk, the other set were able to be salvaged by a different shop.

Dang, that's too bad.

Charlie, the built slant six in my 68 Barracuda has flat top 1 mm OS KB 2.2 L pistons and Molinar rods with floating pins all on a cast crank. I bought the rods when they were first released, it is my understanding that the Molinar cast crank rods have been discontinued, but these work with the floating piston pins that came with the flat top pistons.

Do those pistons use a pin lock ring? The OEM pistons, and the pistons I have do not have a lock ring groove. They are for press fit pins. (non turbo pistons). I'm pretty sure the Wiseco pistons have the lock grooves.

Believe it or not, there are some of us that actually want a 198 car.
I've been looking for a B0B car for years. I know another fella that is looking for a b0b. I've seen two 70 barracuda's now that are bob's. Weren't for sale parts cars.
Someone wants that motor for sure.

Stating the obvious here, they aren't making slants anymore.
No one gives them away anymore either, those days are gone.
They are either a couple hundred bucks or they take them for scrap.
Someone will want the crank, the rods and the oil pump gear.

Right! Like I said originally, they're good engines just like the rest.

Hope you guys are right, he told me to be ready to pick it up when he pulls it.

I will probably grab the k-frame at the same time, he is going aftermarket and everything is going to scrap. I know one guy here converts them to v8 k-frames, and so maybe it is worth saving as well.

@halfafish wants it and he's in your area. I think you got it licked.

The whole thing as a conversation peice has value. Imo
Yes the rods are desirable. People stick 2.2 pistons on them and use the 225 crank for a lighter mass and more squeeze.
I'd say they could be worth 100-200 on their own, maybe. K1 makes rods for slants last I checked.. & they aren't based on the 198 rod iirr, so.. how necessary are they after all can could be up for debate.
You can get about 10.1 or near before milling with the 198/2.2 T piston. I did one for Bob years ago, still have a piston 'one was damaged in the box'. Those pistons have a thin wall around the valve relief above the ring...and it chips off. I do not like that feature needless to say.
Hope that information is useful to you.

Well looks like you guys all made my wife happy, as apparently it was far enough from Chicago that I couldn't have been able to get it and add it to my pile.... And, no,. Before anyone gets any ideas, no. There isn't a 198 among my stash haha

All I have is a pile of 170s and 225s. lol

Besides what's in my vehicles I have (1) 225 and a couple of magnum V8's that aren't in a vehicle that were driving. the /6 is the only one that I could drop in something and drive it away (aka not torn apart) at the moment.
I just didn't want people to think by what I'd said that I was somehow "hoarding" 198s or something haha have I never had a 198 in my life. I've worked on a couple probably 30 years ago
