440 Cooling Question “Champion Rad”

-
I'm looking at this Cold Case radiator to cool my 414 W2 engine.

This has been touched on a zillion times but here’s another thread with the same question.

My 71 Scamp build (link below) is nearing the start up phase. Standing in the way is the rad. I’m ready to purchase and I looking to save a few bucks and have decided to go with Champion. I went to order the rad and the tech told me to go with a 26” and dual 12” fans. He told me I’d have to modify the car to get this in. I’m not opposed to doing that. This car came originally with a 198 according to the tag. It currently has a 225 in her. So I’m going to guess it has a small opening where the rad sits. I have no access to the car until May so going to measure it is a no go. Especially with the mountain of snow we got. Has anyone done this operations? Is this something that can be done fairly easily? Does anyone have a part number for me to look at? The engine is currently on the run stand waiting on a few small items and the rad order. I’d like to run the stand with the rad that’s going in the car. This car will definitely be over the 550hp mark. She’s a full solid roller with all the goodies money tried to buy. Lol For details check out the link.

It’s been a long and winding road but there’s the light at the end of the proverbial tunnel.

Merry Christmas

On my '68 Barracuda, which was originally a Slant 6 car, I cut both sides out of the opening and had the bottom hose outlet moved over to fit a US Radiator I had been using effectively with a 440 in my E-Body to get it to work with the 5.9 Magnum I'm running. The fans are the max CFM Dual Spal 12" fans with their shroud and controller.

The black pieces in the picture are from the lower grill opening that I cut to better fit a pair of transmission plate coolers.

I'm running the MP viscous fan and a reproduction fan shroud. I'm hoping that I can make the shroud work with the ColdCase radiator.
I'll be curious to see how much clearance you end up with between the fan clutch and radiator. I wanted to run one of those Cold Case radiator in my '68, but there wasn't enough room. I ended up going with a Champion unit and still only have about 5/16" between the fan clutch and radiator core.

I know of which you speak. I had a 3 core Champion in a 67 and was struggling to make their crappy fans work. There was definitely not enough room to run the factory fan. If I am tight for space, Hayden makes a low profile clutch that should help.

I haven't even pulled the old engine yet, so it will be a while before I get to installing the cooling system.

That's the fan clutch I've got. It's actually one of their prototypes from when they developed that shorter HD clutch. It's still really tight. It doesn't help that the companies making these aftermarket aluminum radiators don't weld the brackets such that the radiator core is flush with the core support. They're losing some valuable space right there. Keep us posted!
