68 Dart first time out

Yep no roll bar for this car. This is my street car to take the family out to breakfast on the weekend. The only track time will be to dial it in for the occasional stop light Corvette incounter. However I would like to have it run as fast as 7.35 in the 1/8 mile if that is possible without adding all the extra safety equipment required to go faster.

The motor dyno was at about 470 Hp and 500 torque to the flywheel running stock edlebrock heads. I'm already thinking I might need some more Hp and have a set of ported Indy 360-1 heads on the bench. Might be cool to only change the heads and tune to see what kind of difference it makes. But first things first need to get the car going down the track with the current combo.
 
I ran at 2 outlaw trucks for 2 yrs., most of my runs were 7.0s @ 98-99, ran a few 6.9s with a best of 6.91 with no roll bar lol.
 
In short (IMO) your chassis ain't working for you. On track days, loosen up the front end, clamp the heck out of the rear, get some good radial slicks, run about 12-14psi in 'em & go from there---you should be close.....
 
Ok made a few adjustments to the car and I'm heading to Irwindale tonight.

List of changes
change carb from 850 mechanical to 770 vac secondary
change street tires to MT drag radials
change stock shock up front to 90/10 shocks

We shall see if it helps
 
throw the 850 holley in the trunk just in case......lol
 
Bought this 68 Dart for a street car. Has a 408 in it and runs pretty strong so I had to take it out to Irwindale last Thursday night to see what she would do.

First run

Second run

I was thinking it might run a high 7 but that just didn't happen with slippery street tires.


My goal is 7.50 - 7.60 so now the challenge has started. My self imposed rules at this point.
1. Full interior
2. No mini tubs
3. No roll bar

Thinking might need a new set of tires and a driveshaft loop prior to my next trip to the track.

Well tonight was a lot better the tires worked great and traction was not a problem.

First run stalled it up to 2000 rpm and short shifted it at 5000

Also had a perfect .500 reaction time on the 3rd run so I guess it wasn't all bad. It was mostly luck as I was mostly concerned with shifting and launching the car at different rpm's and not trying to cut a light.

If my car is legal with no roll bar to 7.35 in the 1/8 I guess I need to try and find another 2 tenths. Guess I will have to play with the fuel and timing.
 
RIGHT ON thats great news for the second time out. Keep tuning I think a few minor changes and you could find a couple tenths.

Looks like that 7.71 is about a 12.00 in the quarter. REALLY nice! Sounds like a fun ride.
The right convertor, like Petty Blue mentioned, would pick you up nicely. The RIGHT one would still be ok on the street.

---Drag racing is addictive... a little more convertor, a little more carb...
 
When you run at a IHRA or NHRA track a roll bar is required.. Its a 11.49 or faster in the 1/4..My car is a street car but I'am putting a roll cage in mine because the motor I'am putting in my car has been mid 10s on motor..I'am adding a little more converter and a little less gear 488s to 456s..The motor is in my dads duster..


EDIT--When do I need a roll bar or roll cage, and what should it look like?
A roll bar is required in any convertible running 13.49 seconds or quicker in the quarter mile, and in other cars beginning at 11.49. The roll bar is accepted in vehicles running as quick as 10.00 second e.t., provided the stock firewall and floorboard is intact, other than for installation of wheel tubs. The rollbar must be constructed of minimum 1 ¾ inch o.d. x .118 inch wall mild steel tubing, or 1 ¾ x .083 chrome moly tubing, and must conform to the following diagram:

Cool, for a second time out:burnout:, i think your 60's could improve a bit if its not spinning the tires now, a 1.55 could be obtained. Whats the ignition timing at and carb jetting? I just noticed the battery is in the engine baty, puting it in the right rear would help .
 
What sticky tire did you use? Brand?? What size/backspace of rim??


That thing sould run right at 11.50's with nothing more than rubbin' on it!

Well with the Dart running well at Irwindale 1/8 mile on Thursday night. I figured might as well try for an 11 sec 1/4 mile time slip out at Fontana on Friday. Here is the results, a little disappointing but still tuning and making changes to hopefully find that 11.50 in the future.

First run 11:15 am

Second run 11:21 am was a hot lap and the car stubmled of the line maybe vapor lock

Mickey Thompson ET Drag Radials 275-60-15 not sure on the backspacing the car has a Dana rear and I not sure if its a stock width. However I am running a 7" rim that is a little narrow for that tire and it doesn't have more than about a 1/4 clearance on both the inner and outer fender so its a tight fit.

I haven't played with the timing yet. I checked it and it was only like at 33 degress I thought that was kind of low as most of my cars have liked about 36 degress but I left it to base line the changes of the tires and front shocks.

Next week I will probably put the 850 back on and play with timing.
