Comments on Power steering setup - 6 cyl to 340 swap

I have a 76 duster with power steering and I yanked the six and installed a 340 and I will be getting to the power steering brackets and mounting etc soon....

I have no clue what I am doing....... Any comments for me?

One question comes to mind - Is there a conversion kit like the engine mounts etc....does it even need it? I could go on with questions for hours....

Thanks - JB

Try a search on the forum first. It comes in quite handy. I use it all the time. Unless I am stumped and can't find an answer.

I think your golden if you can get the power steering pump mounted and pulleys lined up.

Yes there is a engine mount kit to use the 6 cyl k frame and small block engine, i think there are about only a couple companies that make it, i look and see if i can find it. As far as piwer steering goes it gets somewhat more complicated, a lot of guys will recommend going to the saginaw style pump vs the federal which i am running, if im not mistaken i think you can use the pump off the 6 cyl but need diff brackets and pulley, also what year 340 are you working with? Pre 69 I believe used the driver side water pump exit and 70 and up uses the pass side exit. Are you using the 6cyl rad or replacing it?

I just switched from a /6 to a 440 and made it a point to keep my PS pump since I had just replaced it. Just had to find a bracket and I was good to go. Now you will have to find out what the right length belt is but thats more of a trial and error type thing.

I read he already installed the 340...but proper brackets are a must for your pump style.

Check on eBay for the bracket. Mancini doesn't make those so the odds are pretty good that you will find it cheaper on eBay. I know found my for less.

OK this is what I have ascertained so far......

BTW yes the engine is already in the car.....

No I dont know which type of pump I have...

It sounds like to me that all I have to do is determine the brand of pump then buy the correct brackets for that pump for a 340

then once installed I am supposed to see about the actual pulley as it may not line up?

Is that all correct so far? - No worries on lines?

i just changed a 6 to 318, no trouble with power steering pump, used shumacher motor mounts ,ran into trouble finding headers to miss gearbox of power steering , abandoned the headers, found 360 exhaust manifolds, they worked good and have a larger opening than the 318 manifold, mine was 71 model 318,the 5.2 off the magnums of the 90s wont miss gearbox, used manifolds off 72 model 360 duster, worked ok.

when I went from a /6 to a 360 I just swapped the hoses and used the pump that came with the 360
easy peasy

Ok I figured out I have a saginaw pump...... That being said I went to pullapart and I found a 88 ram truck with either a 360 or 318 in it(i didnt figure it out) - the truck had a saginaw style pump so I took the brackets......

I got four pieces and the bolts but the pieces are just a tad different but seem to have the same dimensions as the ones being sold on ebay that are supposed to be correct for 1970......

I think these will work...... Any comments?
