So let me get this straight .....you cant diagnose your engine problem BUT you are going to swap the whole engine out as if swapping the whole entire engine is easier than diagnosing the existing one in the car.

I would go back to diagnosing before swapping engines, it seems we still don't know if it's a rod or a battery terminal problem.

Swapping engines can potentially open a can of worms if the engines are of different years with different accessories and so on.

BTW: is this a manual or automatic car??

Manual and someone from the site is coming over hopefully tomorrow to give a second opinion as I already had someone else here earlier today whow said i broke a rod.... and no I'm not putting the motor in. At this point I'm not touching it... no smug comment needed... I'm trying here. I appreciate your time to suggest further check though as I don't want to spend unnecessary money

Memike posted awhile back that he has, I believe a "free" slant 6 in Jonesboro Arkansas, that's a good motor and a great guy...no need to go to Canada for these things, I have had several of these, can hardly give them away....but when you need them, they can actually be hard to find. Good luck with figuring this out.

So how far are you from memike?
I would stay away from the craigslist engine gamble if possible.

Mollysmom64, please ask the person that is coming over to check out your car to post what (he or she) finds. No offense intended, but they may be able to better describe the condition.

There are a lot of good folks on this site that really would like to help you figure out what's going on. Your Valiant looks like it's in really decent shape and definitely worth the effort to get back on the road.

Right now members aren't sure if you need a replacement motor. It's always hard to diagnose a problem over the internet or phone (especially if there are multiple problems going on). It's best if you can get someone 'hands-on' with the car.

As always, be cautious who you invite over. 99 times out of 100 you'll be safe but there is that 1% out there.

I'm about half way between the two of you and I'd be willing to pick the motor up and take it back to Fayetteville and she could pick it up there. It'd cut her driving time in half.

Giving away a good motor is a generous offer and a big step in getting this car back on the road. Let me know if I can help :glasses7:

The post is appropriately titled "damsel in distress". have you ever been driving down the road, see someone on the side and say to yourself, "I'm not getting involved with this. not today" LOL! And you know, you can be a master mechanic and the woman on the side of the road's husband or someone she knows will swear that you messed the car up trying to get it running. LOL! Being a hero just isn't worth it ROFLMAO.

I don't do drama, no room for it in my life anymore :glasses7:

So Damsel, keep us posted on your car's progress. And keep on wrenchin. If you get someone to swap the engine, get out there with them and watch and help. its a good learning experience and eventually you will be rebuilding engines yourself, but you have to start somewhere. swapping one out is a good place to start.

Mollysmom64, I've been reading this thread and just wanted to say " I take my hat off to you". To attempt to do what you have done has been a learning experience for you, we've all been there. Remember the only thing that is a mistake is something you haven't learned from. Sounds like you have a handle on things now (With the help of the FABO family). Wishing you nothing but the best as you move forward with this project. Keep us posted , and once Molly comes to life again it will be a feeling you will never forget!! :)

I wouldn't say that you messed anything up. Anytime you try to start driving a car that has been sitting for a long period of time there are going to be a lot of minor little things wrong with it like leaks and electrical problems and such. Cars have a tendency to deteriorate when they are not being driven on a regular basis...especially when they are 50 years old. It just takes a while to figure it all out. At least you are trying to learn which is a heck of a lot more than most people do. Don't give up on it. I've been working on cars for several decades and they still aggravate the living heck out of me sometimes. You just have to be patient and keep learning.

Let us know how it turns out.
