Desert Car Kings

I dont know if anyone else noticed but the top must have been a real cheapy...It didnt have the right grain in it, It looked like a plain roll of vinyl.

not saying i hate the show but its no gearz i actually learn stuff from stacy i would end up trying to teach a bunch of guys some stuff i dont know evreything but i did notice the long haired guy i beleive hates to work on mopars non of them where really happy cept the son.

cuda looked decent gto terrable charger looked a lil lowrider for me. idk why ppl where rippin on foose his show was the stuff.

they said the motor was rebuilt top end theyve said that on a few....

I always thought Krylon was a reputable engine builder.......

Man oh man. I am in a hotel with cable (too cheap and busy at the house) and watched those guys do that poor charger and GTO. First of all I do not believe they did those projects in 3 weeks including scrounging the piece parts needed. Second of all the Charger looked like the door was mis-aligned by almost 3/4" at the bottom when that poor guy's kid drove it away from the auction. Poor kid as his friends probably saw the show.

When I was in HS we had another family as family friends with kids my age. My Dad bought a 67 Coronet 440 4dr with 318. The other family bought a 68 Charger 440 six pack in dark green. We would go camping at the lake together. The Charger sounded so cool pulling in at the lake... rumm, rumm, room. Lucky guys.

Yes, that show is about a bunch of hacks. File this show right next to Monster Garage and Orange County Choppers. What's with the schedule thing? Take the time do do the car right.

Deep down I was hoping that aircleanerless engine would catch fire from all the sparks as they tried to start it. Hacks...

Hey, Monster Garage was at least original and interesting when it first aired. Can't comment on OCC, never jumped on that bandwagon. I guess everything bows to the pressures and the trends eventually..

I like the show. Of course the drama and fake deadlines is typical Hollywood. Amazing the camera happened to be pointed right at the Barracuda rear glass when it was knocked off the stands, after pointed talk about being careful since it would cost $2K to replace. I also question the prep work, but noticed the Charger had fresh paint on the frame before they installed the fenders, though they didn't document that effort.

If you believe the auctions are real, then the market decides the price, which is the definition of fair, though some might pay $5K extra to be shown on TV as a winner. I do question the economics. They typically spend 3 wks with 3 full-time workers, plus the son and boss. Figure 500 hrs labor min. They usually say they need ~$5K to cover labor, so $10/hr avg. Those numbers don't work. Without the TV funding, it wouldn't pay. Of course, most FABO guys would be lucky to realize $1/hr for their labor if they decided to part with their treasure. Most wouldn't even recover the parts they put into it. That is why it only works as a hobby.

Anyone notice the Cialis ads that run with the show? An older guy's Chevy over-heats but he is so car-wise he walks past the mechanic and adds water to the radiator himself, then drives home to do his manly duty. Might impress non-FABO viewers since most people today are afraid to open the hood of their "computerized" cars. Maybe they pulled the ad for fear of lawsuits from dweebs who got burnt by spewing hot water when they tried that at home.

saw that episode airwoofer with the sparks and omg i couldnt believe it. Only got halfway thru the charger episode and that car looked like hell from the beginning and from what other guys saying on this thread that it ran a high 19! thats pitiful! I raced a 68 charger at the strip and he had a stock 318 with 727 and, well i had my 69 mustang at the time, he beat me by half a second and he ran mid 15s while i ran a 16. That engine that they put into that charger must of been worn out to hell or about ready to blow because thats redonkulous it ran in the 19s! Pitiful rebuilds they are doing but i hope they improve big time on the rebuilds soon and hopefully it doesnt turn into a F**kn drama show.

oki know this show is all a setup when they (broke) the back window on the barracuda look when they take it out at how far apart the legs are on the stand when they put it down ....and when he (brakes) it look a the legs right as it hits and falls thats all im saying

I watched it last night. Wish I would not have. About fell over laughing when it ran a 19.6. I think that kid will be safe. He just got him Honda performance with better styling.
im with u when i was just messing around that the track my buds said what will that dakota run so i did 1st it was a lowered ran damn near out of oil tow times not byme smokeing 92 swb dodge dakota 3.9 6 and it ran high 18s so if they cant get a 383 to run better than that go home and stay home

Let me remind everyone that they were running short on time and only had two weeks to finish the Charger!!

I've said it before, the old man seems kinda flaky to me. He won't let anyone, including his son and partner, into his private yard and stash of cars. But when his son got in there and took some parts for the Pontiac needed to complete the build, he didn't get too pissed. Also, after he gives his guys a rediculous deadline and budget, he always says "now get to work". I hope their paying him a boat load of money to look like a jerk!

OK, I so totally believe that they stumble on a guy who built a few Chargers "back in the day" and lo and behold out of a car trunk comes just the parts they need in great condition. Then when the son was pulling into the shop magically a pair of bucket seats was also in the truck.

Anybody else notice the engine bay was painted already when they were messing with the fender that didn't fit?

Not really worth watching IMO. Maybe it will increase our car's values with higher interest from non-MOPAR newbs bthen again as gas goes up and jobs go down...

ive been to DVAP several times when i go out to visit the mom in phoenix.
its a great place, but its overpriced and the show sucks. its kinda cool to have bought parts there before it was a show.

They also said the motor was rebuilt. I must of missed that part.

You didnt miss anything they never show any of the engine rebuild, I honestly believe they just throw an engine in and call it good. Im not surprised the Charger ran a 19+ sec run. The engine probrably had 150,000 miles on it. LOL

Well, I received a disappointing response to my Comment Form from The Discovery Channel. It appears no one actually read my comment: "If you want to see what REAL Mopar car people think of your new show Desert Car Kings, read this," along with a link to this thread.

It's just a generic response that seems to be tailored to someone giving them an idea for a new show ... or am I reading it wrong?

For you car warrior fans, I submit this from another website a few years back.

We called it the Ugliest. Mustang. Ever. Our readers called it a pony with rabies, a monstrosity and an abomination. Many of you didn’t even believe the car was real. For some reason the guys over at Rich Evans Designs were willing to once again face public humiliation and brought out what they call the “Hardcore Knight” Mustang to SEMA once again. We thought we noticed some differences, and looking back at the photos from last year, we can see they added a few extra spikes (for good measure) to the roof line and the mirrors. Everything else remains relatively the same, including the belief that they can actually sell versions of the car to the public. Rich Evan’s web site claims that they will be producing 100 limited edition cars and up to 1000 of the 19-piece component kits to make your own.

Ever since the Barracuda episode, anything I hear about them just pisses me off. I have a soft spot for the first generation Barracuda. But to see them purposely break the rear glass, then ***** that "oh man it costs 2,000-2,500 for that window!" There are are people on this board who can't give them away!

It is just idiot programming and they seem like they know **** about ****.

My two cents.

Caught the Barracuda episode the other night and it was the 1st time I'd ever seen the show. Anyone else notice them removing an air cleaner from a slant-6 during the teardown, then later talking about how rare this V8/pushbutton car is? Something doesn't add up...
