Could anyone tell me what this diaphragm in the upper left is for? It looks like the heater hoses join up there, and the diaphragm is run from vacuum from the #6 intake runner. It seems like I might have a rip in it.

Hi, It is part of the air conditioning system that is no longer in use (by the looks of things) Its a vacuum valve that directs heated water when the switch on the dash is activated.

It's what stops hot coolant from circulating through the heater core.
Called the "heater control valve" and you can see in detail what the deal is with a google search.

Some are cable controlled, and some by vacuum.

The air conditioning is no longer operational, obviously, since it's missing so many parts. I'd imagine I'd just be able to bypass it if I had to, or I could just leave it unhooked from vacuum.

If you don't intend to use it, I'd just remove it completely.

The vacuum servo moves a lever on the inline valve. If the valve leaks just buy a length of heater hose for direct run from points A to B. If the valve don't leak.. The lever inline with the pipe is open for winter operation. Lever at 90 degrees to the pipe is valve closed. This can provide a cooler cabin in summer.

You got it Redfish.
If I remember correctly, without vacuum applied the heat is shut off.
If the plan is to have heat, and it does not leak then use it as long as it matches with your controls in the cabin. (cable or vacuum)

My car didn't have one and I don't really care that it doesn't, but the heater box itself gets hot even though the vents that allow the heat through are closed.

Some of the earlier servos had 2 vacuum lines and no internal spring. Vacuum moved it both directions open or closed.

Thanks for all the replies...I really do appreciate all the help as I try to get this thing roadworthy. I'll test the diaphragm for movement again, and I'll probably just throw a manual valve in if it's bad.

If you don't care to be original, many later ones work. I have a few plastic ones for a Ford that I got cheap on ebay. One vacuum line operates it, no vacuum a spring closes it. My early A's don't even have vacuum climate controls, so I was thinking to rig a 12 V vacuum switch to operate when the AC is on (after-market). My 69 Dart had that heater valve and a 5 button vaccum-electric climate switch. First time I saw a photo of one in a 65 A (original?). My 65 C-body has a 4-button climate switch (non-AC car).
