Maxi is in the Hospital......

HAHAHAHAHAH!!!
Thank You Ramcharger & Maxi for making me feel better! We need more like you 2 on here!!!
FABO is a better place with you both.
HEY MAXI!!
Howdabooboo?? You look like your doing OK. I hope you feel better soon and try to remain calm even if someone is getting too close. The trick to enjoying the vets office is this:
Keep circulating and working the room. At each human, walk up, sit, look up, smile. Everyone of them will pet you and they will give you snacks!
Vinnie palys em for all they are worth and then tries to con me into a mcD's drive through for a hamburger!
Hope to see you tomarrow!!
John, Vinnie is laying here telling me what to type. He said he too stupie and old to learn typing, his master still hasn't mastered!:toothy10:

Well, Master went into the basement to call Darla. I like Darla, she's cool. 8) I don't like the vet office and I don't like thier treats either. They suck. :-D Hey Vinnie! You are quite the stud muffin pal! You might even be strong enough to deal with me. I'm fixed so let's have some fun! WOL (woofing out loud). Merlin's too wimpy for me.

Here's a picture of us with Darla being lovey. I accept her.

she looks like she is doing well:cheers:

Gosh dang dog been on the internet again.....:-D

Thanks ink! She was not showing any signs of improvement for a few days so upped her glucosamine/chondroitin biscuit intake for that of a 100 pound dog. Presto! 48 hours later she's back to her old attitude.

Joe,
Is the vet going to take another x-ray to see if the bones are healing properly? I hope Maxi is healing ok.

Now when I broke my left leg in a car wreck years ago I had to go twice a week for x-rays. I had a cast up to my crotch. I was bad and didn't keep my weight off my leg so the bones weren't healing properly. After a month of x-rays twice a week and changing the casts to see if it would heal properly the docs had to make the decision to operate or not.

My last day went like this:
X-ray - bones were way off.
Docs cut slits in the cast, shove in some spreaders and try to "adjust" the cast. I'm sitting in a wheelchair as they're doing the adjustments. The docs tell me that if the adjustments STOP hurting then something is wrong. The pain as they were making adjustments was unreal. My right hand left an impression in the wheelchair armrest (I was holding onto it that tight). My left hand was clenched in a fist close to my head. My parents in another room down the hall could hear me grunting as the docs were adjusting away.
Back for another x-ray. Still way off. more adjustments, PAIN, and another x-ray. Still no good.
Docs decide to take the cast off and reset the bones. BUT the bones are hooked together and they try to pull my leg apart. One doc has a hold of my foot and the other doc has me by the thigh with my leg in the air. They try to twist and pull my leg apart. It's not coming apart. Docs tell me to just relax. Ummmmm...... they're trying to make a wishbone out of my leg and they want me to relax?!??? They try to get my leg apart for the next 6 hours with no luck. They decide to operate the next week to put in plates and screws. So I spent 9 hours in the hospital that day and not once did they offer me a pain pill, demerol, morphine etc.

Maxi is probably tougher than me. I really hope she heals up ok.

Holy Crap Bro! WTF? Why didn't they put you out? I swear I would reached up and strangled someone, no joke. Maxi got in my RC and back out with her busted leg and blown out tarsus. My RC is tall enough that I can sling a Snap-On stool right under it at any point..... This dog is TOUGH!!! My Jeep sits much lower but isn't ready for the road yet. I picked her up in the company van (please don't tell) cause it sits so much lower. BTW, I paid for the gas! I'm not taking advantage of my company.

Wylde, YOU ARE TOUGH if you dealt with that. My G-d man, that was BS. I hope that everthing healed OK after that fiasco.

Joe, it gets even better!

I think the doctors were sadistic sob's that day. Even the nurses "felt" my pain. I can laugh about it now. It was back in '96 when that happened.

For the operation they wanted to keep me awake and just give me an epidural. They even offered to set up a monitor so I could see them operate. I wanted to be put right out for the operation. They said no way. I told them if I'm not out, they don't operate. Then I told them as soon as I hear the saw and drill, I'll probably try to hop off the stretcher. I won.

The night of the operation, the nurse tell me that I'll wake up about 12 hours after the surgery. After the operation, I'm in the recovery room for about 25 minutes when I wake up in agony. My leg is in a cast and my leg is swelling from the operation. Nurse lifts my leg and puts an x-ray plate under me. She clicks the x-ray, lifts my leg to take the plate away and then DROPS my leg onto the bed. She was too quick and jumped outta the way as I tried to grab her. I woulda probably killed her if I would have got a hold of her. Damn bee-yotch. The other nurses got a good laugh out of it.

For the next day or so I get a demerol shot every 4 hours. Trouble is the shot takes about an hour to kick in and wears off 2 hours before I'm due for the next shot. That afternoon I start re-hab to get used to crutches and stairs, etc. As they let my leg down and stand me up my leg starts throbbing like a mutha. "Too bad",they say. "Lets get moving." That's day two.

Day three I get to go home. They want to change the cast because the front is all nasty and blood soaked. Doc gets the saw and spreaders ready. As soon as he cut the cast, it popped open on its own. He didn't need the spreaders. My leg was that swollen inside the cast. It just went "POP". Doc looks at me and says, "WOW! I bet that feels better!" "Ain't that the truth" I tell him.

I never did go back to get the plates removed. They're still in there.

I feel much better today! I've spent much less time in my cave (crate) and am still the Alpha no matter what Merlin thinks. These biscuits that my Master Joe gives me makes me feel much better and I can't wait to get this thing off my leg. I want to bite Merlin when he gets too close to my leg and I think he's getting the picture now.

Master Joe lays down beside me for 15 or 20 minutes every evening before he goes to bed to rub my belly and massage my hips 'cause he knows I can't jump up to the bed anymore. He's a pretty good Master. He sure beats my old one....Grrrrrrrr! He said something about me to that thing he holds to his ear and I heard "Vet" and "Splint Change". I'm not sure I'm liking that. He always tricks me into going for a ride and I end up at a place where they stick me with needles. I want to bite them too.... :-D

Ruht Roow, he's coming back from making that dark smelly water with the frozen stuff in it. I better get off here before he realizes I can type......

Holy hell Maxi can sure type well! She looks happy in that pic, hope everything turns out for the best.8)

Wylde, you have been treated better here: www.vrcc.com I can't believe that you were treated like this......:angry7::angry7:

Holy hell Maxi can sure type well! She looks happy in that pic, hope everything turns out for the best.8)

Lol, yeah she can considering she has no opposable thumbs, lol! Great vid and so very true. I always wonderd where the saying "I worked like dog" came from. :-D

Well, we had our vet visit yesterday and they gave her a bunch more pain pills. The vet, Dr. Stevenson said that the break/luxation is as bad as she's ever seen. She was amazed that Maxi was in as good spirits as she was and feels that it will never, ever heal and that these are my options:

Surgery.
Amputation (cheaper than surgery).
Give her up so the surgery can be paid for by a group but I could never see her again.
Euthanasia.

This sucks but it would seem very selfish of me to have her leg lopped off just so I can keep her around. I wont have her put down, that's not right and smacks of "If I can't have her, no one can".

I think I know what I have to do, give her up so they can do the surgery and adopt her out again. It's the right thing to do for her and in her best interest.

The doc is going to contact the surgeon this coming week and let me know what he thinks then get back to me, at that time, I will have to make a decision as to what's right for her, not me. I'll still have Merlin and be able to get health insurance for him so this never happens again.

Joe I am so sorry to hear this. I feel your pain. Our pets are like family and this has to be a hard decision for you. Best wishes to Maxi and I hope all ends up well.

Those are tough options for you and her. I can't help but think she's gonna miss you and Merlin and her home no matter how good a home she ends up in.

I'm so sorry to hear this Joe..... I can't imagine what your feeling right now. I bet every pet owner on here is feeling a sting too..... :sad10:

Just wondering.... can you technically "Adopt" her back once she's patched up? I mean, they ARE in the business of helping animals, right? Why not re-unite you guys?

Just sounds like an unreasonable stipulation for providing care.

Joe this really sucks big time. It's crap you have to give her up before "they" will do the surgery. And even if she gets the surgery will she be back to 100% or will the result be such that she might be just as well off without the leg. As for having the leg lopped off just so you can keep her around; don't forget YOU are her person. Would she be happier to just deal with the situation if she could stay with you ? Didn't someone mention earlier that dogs don't lay around feeling sorry for themselves but adjust. Hang in there, the best solution will present itself.

I'm so sorry to hear this Joe..... I can't imagine what your feeling right now. I bet every pet owner on here is feeling a sting too..... :sad10:
just went and gave my 3 a hug. i can not imagine being faced with this dilemma.

Joe, this is just so NOT RIGHT!
There has got to be another way. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you for help in making the right decision.

Those are some really tough options, Joe. I know you will do what's right by Maxi. The best decision for our pets isn't always the easiest on us. I've been there more than once. Had to sell my Harley and the wife's 70 Cuda due to vet bills. Have some looming over us right now, too. But whatever is best for the critters always seems to win out. I'll try to scrape up a few bucks to help out, or donate something from a parts sale if I can.

That IS an unreasonable stipulation.

Count me in for $20 too. Just tell me how to send it.

All of you have been so helpful, helping me to see my mom before she passed. I would feel terrible having to rely on all your charity again and it just wouldn't be right.

The surgeon may have thought of some other options too so let's see what he has to say later this week.

John, yes, it's bogus that an option to save her leg would entail me to give her up. Nope, I'd have to promise that I would never search her out and have to give them my SS number. I guess it's good that this group exisits but it's a hell of an option that I have to think long and hard about and I need more info from the surgeon.

Joe,this is just my opinion but Maxi has been with you through thick and thin.I feel you should keep her til the end.Maxi is a part of who you are today!

P.S What a terrible decision to make.Stay strong!

I'm dumbfounded that such an option exists, how is having to give her up in the best interests of anyone, certainly isn't in the best interests of Maxi. You're not relying on our chairity Joe, Maxi is, let's get this done. I'll throw in $50, just let me know when.
