Pit bull mixed got our Golden retriever today.

I have a size 13.5EEE. I can stomp a Chihuahua's guts out with one stomp if I have to. The problem with pits and their mixes is, they have incredible upper body and jaw strength. Even someone in tip top shape may not be able to overcome one if it attacks. You simply cannot compare that to a small dog. I do agree that maybe we hear more about pits because that's what the media loves reporting on. Death and carnage. But if Chihuahuas caused as much damage as pits, we'd be hearing about that, too.

I'm sorry to the OP (and to everyone else) who has had negative experiences with pitbulls. But.....I'm going to be the one who is going to tell a very positive story about pits. I met someone in May of 2021. She had 2 pitbulls (Julian and Penny). One was a mix and the other was purebred. I would come over and these dogs would cling to me like velcro. I would give them dog biscuits and they would sit next to me on the couch. Julian passed away in March of 2022. Then came Greg (a neglected pit from NJ that needed a foster). OMG, PURE MARSHMELLOW. Absolutely the best dog ever. He had cancer and passed away in April of 2023. Penny passed away 2 months later. Then came Max and Tigger. 2 more pits that needed foster care. These 2 dogs had a very rough life. Absolutely wonderful dogs. Tigger got adopted and my girlfriend ended up adopting Max. Then came Asher. A 1 year old pit purebred from NYC whose owner was arrested and thrown in jail. Asher literally lived in a crate for 8 months and fed table scraps. He's in CT now and living an amazing life. He's so affectionate and goes crazy when I walk through the door. He just wants attention and milk bones.

6 pitbulls in 4 years. 1,000's of licks, ZERO bites.

They're not all bad.

My daughters Pit mix dove on our golden . I could not get her off. She was like an alligator. Latched on Dori's neck and twisted back and forth so fast. Once I got a hold of its collar .I tried dragging her off and I just drug both dogs away together.

I twisted the collar and pulled she turned and latched onto my arm. I started punching her in the head while my legs were wrapped around her. Kitchen chairs were flying, Table was moved against the fridge with me and the dog under it. Grand kids screaming , Wife screaming.

It took everything I had not to shoot that dog in front of the kids. I never thought that dog would turn like that for no reason . No wonder that breed gets a bad rap.

Now I am hurting pretty bad and for what. Taking in a Rat bastard that should have got put down. A very docile dog that turned monster for no reason. The 11 month old golden was just sitting next to me with its head on my lap. Man I am hurting, Todds coming over to help ship some parts.

I pity Dori. Paw bit and swelled , Neck ripped up laying here shaking.

As far as I can tell, nobody has said it so I will.
Dori is beautiful, and I'll bet an absolute sweetheart. Prayers and Best wishes for a speedy recovery for you both!

"They're not all bad."
I don't think anybody here has said that. The pit lovers probably have thousands of positive stories. My gf lived next to one for years, she said that dog was an absolute sweetheart. I bet Steve might even have said the same thing, yesterday. But they are five times more likely to be bad than ANY other breed. And more likely to kill a human than all other breeds, combined!
That's a gamble I am not willing to make, ESPECIALLY with todlers in the house

A chihuahua, we had them and they are harmless
And this is where different people have different experiences with different dogs. That Chihuahua drew blood on me a handful of times and we decided to re-home it for the kids safety, but Minutes later would be sleeping iny lap. The pit mix, well....

That's good that it's good with kids. Yours is probably because it's not full pit bull. Heinz 57 dog's are the best kind of dog to have

People need to not blame the dog, but the owner.the owner needs to take responsibility for any breed of dog. The dog is doing what it thinks is right, and was breed into a pet from a wild animal way back, and think of how small the gene pool actually is, hundreds(thousands?) of years to produce a breed.

I agree there, we got that pit/border Collie mix from the shelter. We now have some mutt from the shelter and a pure breed Boston terrier. The Boston has leg issues at three years old but the mutt has no problems, except getting grey. I've yet to own or known a pure breed that didn't have some sort of health issues in it's lifetime

We had one Dachshund, and it was mean! Never again with those.
Very unfortunate for the OP, bad situation

I heard a disturbance in front of my house. I ran outside and found my across the street neighbors two pit bull mixes trying to kill my 75 year old next door neighbor in my driveway.
The owner was dancing around, trying to pull them off, getting nowhere.
I ran back in the house, got my 38, shot and killed one of the pits, the other one ran. I then called 911.

Police, animal control , showed up, and an ambulance took my friend to the hospital. Four news helicopters showed up (we had been having several local stories of dog attacks in socal at the time, including a killing of a very young girl).
The police and animal control thanked me, said I may have saved his life.
The owner complained I didn't have to shoot her dog.

My girlfriend likes pits, wanted one bad. I told her a pit was a deal breaker, relationship would be over.
We now have three wonderful, but noisy, German shepherds.

Your daughter's dog would have been dead before I left the room.
I sure envy American citizens who can do that business with a hand gun. Up here in Communist Canada you would have your gun confiscated AND get thrown in jail!

I've had Pitbull Terrier's since my 20's and now in my 60's. Jessie , Mad Max, Jessie James The 2nd, Bella, Hank, and now JoJo, and Sgt. Gunner. None of them have ever hurt a flea. Jessie James The 2nd raised all our kids, and an entire neighborhood of kids. I would trust my dogs more than any other dog out there. They are a family orientated breed, who also love people. They are also complete clowns. Like any dog, it is how they are raised and apparently this particular dog wasn't raised right, and should have been monitored.
I've owned these dogs for over 40 years, and quite frankly wouldn't own anything else. If you've never owned one you wouldn't understand. Telling me a story about you hearing about your friends, sisters, cousins dog doesn't tell me ****. Own one first, and then be the judge. WARNING: It might just be the best dog you've ever owned.

Sorry I left out the most important part. Poke a screw driver, anything under the collar and start twisting. The monsters eyes roll back and it will let go but you do not let go until you feel safe to.
I would keep twisting and hold on until it's last breath!

My double first cousin had a yorkshire terrier years ago. I was a regular at her house because after mama died, she was the closest thing I had left to a mama so I visited her often. I have her to thank for my love of hazelnut coffee. Anyway, one night she was getting ready to turn in and said "Rob, get Nedra and put her in her house for the night". Without thinking, I got up and reached down to get her and she bit my index finger slam to the bone. I still have a scar and this has been approaching 30 years ago. Even though the dog knew me and I had petted her on many occasion, she let me have it. In that instant, I think I showed the greatest restraint of my life, because I wanted to just reach down and snap her little neck, but I didn't. I knew how much my cousin loved that little dog.

We know how decent people will just snap?
Pitts can be great for years then just out of nowhere...
I never feel comfortable around them. Guy directly across the street has a mixed pitt, hair looks like some wild african animal`s, jumps the 4' fence with ease, he better go 6'.

Sorry to hear about your dog. I've been through it with aggressive breeds there's no room for a second chance unfortunately the dog should be put down before it gets worse do you really want to risk it.

After I got my wings in 1974, I had to attend the Air Force's Survival school. We learned about escape and evade if shot down behind enemy lines. They taught us that if a large, vicious dog (of any breed) ever attacks you, do not run. Stand firm with your feet apart, face the dog, lean forward and stretch out your arm. The dog will bite at your hand since it is sticking out the most. As soon as your hand is in its mouth, ram your fist and arm in as far as you can. Your arm might get torn up a bit, but it is better than the alternative. I would personally hate to do it, but it could save your life.

This is Dolly May our toy Aussie, she's a very smart and loyal dog, a little hyper but she keeps us moving and goes everywhere with us.
She's very protective and hesitant until she gets used to someone.

Dogs, much like people are often a product of their environment and training. My mother had 2 pit mixes that were born in her house, neither of them ever showed any aggressive behavior in their lives. Both lived in her house, with other dogs until they died, one at 8 years from complications of diabetes, the other at 12 from old age. They were just big goofy mutts, but we were also very aware of the potential for danger.
When I was a kid we had a black lab, great family dog, but he became aggressive when he was diagnosed with cancer, the pain he was in caused him to react. After surgery he returned to his old self until he died a year later.

Really? By your logic, at least 51% of Pit bulls harm or kill someone or another animal?
Yeah, I'll defend them because I own them. I've had several and will continue. Every friend that comes over here is greeted by curious but sweet dogs that never show aggression toward them. NONE of the 5 that we have had has ever been aggressive toward a person. People can walk down the street and they will bark but no worse than other breed dogs that we have had.
Ours have been around kids, adults, other dogs and loud cars and none of them have been violent.
Some of you are like racists are toward anyone that isn't the same color as you. You hear statistics and listen to the media and don't look any further.
I do have sympathy for the OP and have no explanation for the attack.
Years ago it was Dobermans that scared people, then it was Rottweillers, German Shepherds and other breeds.
Good for you....but imo, the stats don't lie.

Dogs are man's best friend, they are loving, caring, forgiving, but if you abuse them they will get you. I'm a dog lover too, but I don't trust pit bulls or a chow. I grew up around German Sherpards and we had one that turned on my dad and that was the end of that dog. Animals have feelings just as we do

They are a dangerous dog, same as a chow, I wouldn't have either one on a beat. I have a brother in law that was attacked by 3 pit bulls while riding his bike.
