Ok time to wake this thread up as we have begun the journey again......

following threads were started and you can catch up. I’ll also be posting my progress again in this thread.

Front end work:
Brake conversion. Lower control arm swap?

Rear end thread:
Looking for opinions.

I’m going to move my build back here with some photos over the next few days. I’ll also post links to other areas of FABO where I’m looking for more pointed help and advise.

Picked up some springs and a big thanks to qkcuda for the hookup. Excellent road trip out to the Port Dover area to pick them up and see some friends who live out that way. Was going to attempt a floor install but I think I’ll wait till Tuesday for a hoist. I had it all set up for the attempt and realized that a hoist will make the job a little smoother and having an experienced mechanic by my side will keep the job moving along.

Just going over my parts tonight taking stock of what I have and need and this little problem came up. Went to slip the yoke on the tranny and it doesn’t fit. It appears my slip yoke is keyed and my transmission (727) is not keyed. I’ll have to address this at some point.

Well a discouraging find today. I knew when I bought my rear end that it was sitting out side and not protected. Hell I got a good deal on it and when I cracked it open, it was even a better deal seeing that it was a sure grip unit with 3:55’s. Today I took to cleaning it. Take off gasket and residue. Sprayed down the inside with brake cleaner as the last owner packed it with grease. After a few minutes of cleaning I began to re-lube all the bearings and gears to keep the rust at bay. Well as I was spinning her I came across a fatal spot. It appears she settled in some water and the ring gear At the low point has rusted with some pitting. Good news is I’ll be sending it out for a complete overhaul when the time gets nearer. At least the sure grip unit is clean and tidy along with the housing. New bearings, ring and pinion.

Decided to go it alone. Got quite the operation going here in the driveway. Left spring, the offending spring is now on the ground. JRS P-450269 is getting ready to pick up where the original left off!
The shock bushing is toast! Oddly enough I can’t find bushings ;-) Onward........

Springs are replaced and a few more loose ends to do then we’ll sit it down and torque some nuts. I’m guessing these 30 year old Sears air shocks are going to give me some grief......... Standby!

Well she sits a little off. I let all the air out of the shocks and wouldn’t you know it, the passenger side didn’t drop. So I’m guessing she’s seized up. KYB’s on order. Be nice to put all this suspension behind me so I can get at that rear end next.

Nice build and story, I am up in Sudbury and am just beginning the journey of building one of these also. I have lots of questions for you, starting with: Where is your prefferred place to get replacement body panels? and also where should I be looking for sure grip components or a complete rear end? Thanks

So I’m probably not the best person to ask about body panels. My axels I purchased from Doctor Diff, my rear end kinda fell in my lap. It was an A-Body rear with 355’s. Unfortunately I had to replace the gears with new ones as they were pitted. The SG unit was mint. The B-Body plates (naked) were acquired on EBay. Levers for the parking brake came from Mancini. Also I bout my pitches and bolts for Dr Diff I believe. There are a few guys that will sell a rebuilt pig with SG on Kijiji for about 1800.00. Having one rebuilt is about 600.00 cheaper. I’m at a crossroads with my build right now. I have a 440 .30 over ready to build and a DC k-frame to drop it in with TTI headers. But the weight vs a new hemi are compelling. So this year I’m hoping to get the rear ending in and maybe the engine choice firmed up. RockAuto is your friend for all the little bits and pieces. Buy the heavy stuff up here and save on shipping weight.

Hello again,

I've been a bad poster at keeping everyone up to date. A lot has come along since last year and I'll try and fill everyone in. Frontend work is complete with the conversion to disc brakes and bbp. It was a breeze and I encourage everyone to take a go at it. My reared housing has been stripped blasted and painted. I have the axles from Doctor Diff as well as a few other parts to make the job go easier. Namely all the nuts and bolts. Thanks DD. Also completed is the centre section. 400 transmission in Barrie Ontario did the re and re with new guts and 3.55 gears. I have sourced all the rear brake parts from all over and have assembled them and mounted. Over the next few days I'll be mounting the centre section to the housing, install the axles and source the drums and put this project away till spring. In the mean time I'll start to gather info and build the 440. It's been sitting awhile so it will head over to the machine shop for inspection and to deal with a few areas of concern. I'll be running the slant six with this rear till the 440 and parts come together "Slow Build" A drive shaft will be cut so I'm not stranded for next summer. I'll try and post a few shots of all the action.

Alignment time and stance. Forgive the temp wheels on the front. Just needed till I got to the shop. The shop didn't have fun aligning this. But it came back straight as an arrow.
